To determine the prevalence of atopic dermatitis in a pediatric population from Morelia, Michoacan. An observational, descriptive and comparative study was done to estimate the prevalence and underdiagnosis of atopic dermatitis in children and teenagers from Morelia, Michoacan (n=9578). This study had a sensitivity of 0.87 and a specificity of 0.92. A prevalence of 10.1% and 5.4% was found in children from 6 to 10 years old and teenagers from 11 to 16 years old. The diagnosis was done in only 20% of all cases. The high underdiagnosis suggests taking emergent actions of preventive medicine. The prevalence of atopic dermatitis in pediatric population from Morelia is similar of that reported in the United States and less than of Mexico City.

The wide variety and distribution of fungal species and the complex characterization of their allergenicity, is a complex item. The fungus extracts used to diagnose and treat sensitizations are frequently non effective, and different varieties of extracts are globally distributed. The standardization of commercial fungi extracts results extremely important as diagnostic procedure as well as to decide an efficacious and safe immunotherapy. This paper reviews important methodological steps to the standardization of fungi extracts, and finally the clinical use of these extracts.

Metabolic and hemodynamic components are directly involved. However, convincing data have shown that inflammation participates in the diabetic complications. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the inhibition of the inflammation and pro-inflammatory cytokines with pentoxifylline (PXF) attenuate the progression of the DN. In a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo- controlled study, we evaluated the effect of PXF (1200 mg daily) during 12 months, in 34 patients with incipient or established DN. Evaluated parameters were inflammation, pro-inflammatory cytokines and urinary albumin excretion (UAE). PXF treatment had a reno-protective effect determined by a significant reduction in the UAE in both incipient and established (p<0,01) DN patient. This effect was attributed to a reduction in the C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and leptin serum levels (p<0,01). PXF treatment caused regression and prevented the progression of renal damage. Thus, PXF should be used in the preventive treatment of DN. These results showed that inflammation and pro-inflammatory cytokines are related to the progression of diabetic nephropathy.

For this reason, the study of treatments that seek to reduce the harmful effects of obesity on muscle tissue has been deepened. Diazoxide treatment and various exercise protocols have been proposed to protect skeletal muscle against oxidative stress and its effects. However, the intensity and duration of exercise combined with diazoxide that would obtain the best results for improving skeletal muscle function in obese rats is unknown. To this end, this study evaluated the effects of three different exercise intensities combined with diazoxide on contraction capacity, resistance to fatigue, markers of oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, ROS, and glutathione redox status of skeletal muscle. The results showed that treatments with diazoxide and exercise at different intensities improved muscle contraction capacity by reducing oxidative stress d...

Ethanol accumulation during fermentation is another factor that induces oxidative stress via mitochondrial dysfunction and ROS overproduction. Since this microorganism has raised growing interest as a PUFA factory, we have studied if the combination of PUFA plus ethanol enhances yeast death. Respiration, ROS generation, lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial cardiolipin content, and cell death were assessed in yeast grown in the presence of 10% ethanol (ETOH) or linolenic acid (C18:3), or ethanol plus C18:3 (ETOH+C18:3). Lipid peroxidation and cardiolipin loss were several-fold higher in cells with ETOH+C18:3 than with C18:3. On the contrary, ETOH tended to increase cardiolipin content without inducing changes in lipid peroxidation. This was consistent with a remarkable diminution of cell growth and an exacerbated propidium iodide staining in cells with only ETOH+C18:3. The respiration rate decreased with all th...

The aim of our study is to describe the association of NAFPD and prediabetes (PDM) in asymptomatic patients. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study from a single center in Mexico City. We defined NAFPD based on ultrasound features and alcohol consumption of less than 20 gr/day in men or 10 g/day in women. PDM was defined by impaired fasting glucose (IFG) after a 12 hour fast (with a glucose value of 100-125 mg/dL) and/or a glycated hemoglobin (A1C) test between 5.7 and 6.4 percent. Results: We included data from 458 asymptomatic ambulatory patients who underwent health checkup. The prevalence of NAFPD detected by ultrasound was 17.3% (95% CI, 13-20), and 37% of patients in this group had associated non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The global prevalence of PDM was 26.6 % and 10/122 (91.8%) were newly detected cases, 62.7% were male, mean BMI was 26.02 (SD +/-4.0) kg/m 2. Patients with PDM had associated NAFPD [OR=2.8 (95% CI 1.025-7.8), P=0.038]. Conclusion: We found an association between NAFPD and PDM in asymptomatic outpatients. To our knowledge there have not been any such descriptions in our population. Prospective studies are required to determine the importance of pancreatic fat deposition and its consequences in Hispanics.

Cry1Ac is a potent mucosal adjuvant. This work was undertaken to evaluate the effect of the Cry1Ac toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis over growth up of allergenic fungi. The fungi were isolated from nasal exudates in patients with diagnostic of allergic rhinitis and positive skin prick test to allergic fungi. The fungi isolated were identified morphologic and by Biolog system and agar diffusion test was done to evaluate the effect of the Cry1Ac toxin over the fungi growth up. The following fungal genera were identified: Absidia, Aspergillus, Alternaria, Penicillium, Eupenicillium, Fusarium and Cladosporium. The highest inhibition of growth was obtained for Alternaria to a concentration 31.25 µg/mL of toxin. This inhibition corresponded to 100% of the inhibition achieved with Amphotericin B. We suggest to explore the inhibitory effect of Cry1Ac on the growth up of different genera and species of pathogenic fungi via molecular standardized assays.
