Material and methods: From 2006 and 2012, the characteristics and survivals of all HCC patients who underwent sequential TACE-PVE before major liver resection were retrospectively analyzed according to whether or not they underwent surgical resection as planned. Results: A total of 54 patients (50 males, 93%, mean age 68 AE 10.5 years) were included. Resection was performed in 39 patients (72%), including 19/25 (76%), 16/23 (70%), and 4/6 (67%) with BCLC A, B, and C HCC, respectively (p = 0.839). Tumor recurrence occurred in 22 resected patients (56%) at a mean delay of 15.5 AE 5 months, including 9/19 (47%), 11/16 (69%), and 2/4 (50%) patients with BCLC A, B, and C HCC, respectively (p = 0.430). In non-resected patients, TACE was performed during the follow-up of 8 patients (53%) and was not associated with significant adverse effects or toxicity. Survival was significantly better in resected patients than in non-resected ones (median overall survival (OS): 44 vs. 18 months; p < 0.0001), but was not influenced by the BCLC stage (p = 0.13). Conclusion: In patients with large unilobar HCC, sequential TACE-PVE allows surgical resection in the majority of cases, with good oncological outcome regardless of the tumor burden. When the strategy fails, nonresected patients present with a poorer outcome but can be managed with TACE despite a previous PVE.

Four production modules were divided into four pens with 10 birds each, totaling 60 birds. The following treatments were applied: access to a paddock (TEST), access to a paddock with perches (PER), access to a paddock with artificial shade (SHA), and access to the paddock with perches and artificial shade (PESH). The PESH production module presented the best globe temperature (Tbg,°C) and enthalpy (h, kJ/kg), and thereby, the best thermal environmental conditions, which ensured the longest permanence time of the birds in the paddock. The SHA and PESH modules promoted the lowest respiratory rate and shank and comb temperatures. Live performance was influenced by the presence of environmental enrichment (modules SHA and PESH), with the highest live weight (LW) and weight gain (WG) and the lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) and metabolizable energy intake (MEI). Parts yield, such as giblets, were not influenced by production modules, except for PESH, which promoted higher offal weight. In general, chickens reared in enriched production modules presented greatest performance and comfort results and were considered close to optimal rearing conditions.

Light curing units with different power densities and mode of application used were XL 3000 (480 mW/cm(2)), Jet Lite 4000 Plus (1230mW/cm(2)), and Ultralume Led 5 (790 mW/cm(2)) and immersion media were artificial saliva, Coke((R)), tea and coffee, totaling 12 experimental groups. Specimens (10 mm x 2 mm) were immersed in each respective solution for 5 min, three times a day, during 60 days and stored in artificial saliva at 37 degrees C +/- 1 degrees C between immersion periods. Topography and chemical analysis was qualitative. Groups immersed in artificial saliva, showed homogeneous degradation of matrix and deposition of calcium at the material surface. Regarding coffee, there was a reasonable chemical degradation with loss of load particles and deposition of ions. For tea, superficial degradation occurred in specific areas with deposition of calcium, carbon, potassium and phosphorus. For Coke((R)), excessive matrix degradation and loss of load particles with deposition of calcium, sodium, and potassium. Light curing units did not influence the superficial morphology of composite resin tested, but the immersion beverages did. The corresponding boundary‐transmission problems for the two dimensional Helmholtz equation are shown to be well‐posed in a family of Sobolev spaces with finite energy norms, through a reduction to equivalent systems of boundary integral equations of Wiener‐Hopf type in [L2+ (IR)]2. Formulas for the solutions as well as the so‐called edge conditions arc obtained for any n, by explicit canonical generalized factorization of the presymbols of the associated Wiener‐Hopf operators.

The study involved the following materials: Charisma, Fortify and coffee, Coca-Cola ® , tea and artificial saliva as solutions. Sixty-four specimens (n = 8) were manufactured and immersed in artificial saliva at 37 ± 1 °C. Samples were immersed in the solutions for three times a day and re-immersed in artificial saliva until the translucency readings. The measurements were carried out at nine times: T1-24 hours after specimen preparation, T2-24 hours after immersion in the solutions, T3-48 hours and T4 to T9-7, 14, 21, 30, 60 and 90 days, respectively, after immersion. The translucency values were measured using a JOUAN device. The results were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey's test at 5%. The surface sealant was not able to protect the composite resin against staining, the coffee showed the strongest staining action, followed by tea and regarding immersion time, a significant alteration was noted in the translucency of composite resin after 21 days.

Specimens were prepared (n = 140) with half of the samples finished and polished with Super-Snap ® disks. The experimental groups were divided according to the presence or absence of finishing and polishing and immersion solutions (artificial saliva, sodium fluoride solution at 0.05%-manipulated, Fluordent Reach, Oral B, Fluorgard). The specimens remained immersed in artificial saliva for 24 hours and were then subjected to initial analysis (baseline) of surface roughness and Vickers microhardness. Next, they were immersed in different fluoride solutions for 1 min/day, for 60 days. Afterwards, a new surface roughness and microhardness reading was conducted. The data were submitted to a two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (5% significance level). For the comparison of mean roughness and hardness at baseline and after 60 days, the paired Student t test was used. The results showed that the surface roughness and microhardness of the Filtek Supreme XT were influenced by the finishing and polishing procedure, independently of the immersion methods.

The Pb-evaporation ages of three samples from the Planalto suite are around 2730 Ma (2733 ± 2 Ma, 2731 ± 1 Ma and 2736 ± 4 Ma), whereas U-Pb LA-MC-ICPMS concordia ages obtained for these samples are 2729 ± 17 Ma, 2710 ± 10 Ma, and 2706 ± 5 Ma, respectively. An orthopyroxene quartz gabbro associated with the Pium complex and Planalto suite yielded a U-Pb concordia age of 2735 ± 5 Ma, interpreted as its crystallization age. The Planalto suite granites and the charnockitic rocks associated with the Mesoarchean Pium complex were probably crystallized at 2730 ± 10 Ma. The Planalto granites have ferroan character and are similar geochemically to reduced A-type granites. In previous studies, they have been classified as such, despite the fact that they are syntectonic. The tectonic setting and the association between the Planalto suite and charnockitic series led us to classify these biotite-hornblende granites as hydrated granites of the charnockitic series. The Planalto suite and the Neoarchean charnockitic magmas were more probably derived by partial melting of mafic to intermediate tholeiitic orthopyroxene-bearing rocks similar to those of the Pium complex. At 2.76 Ga, upwelling of asthenospheric mantle in an extensional setting propitiated the formation of the Carajás basin. Later on, at ca. 2.73 Ga, heat input associated with underplate of mafic magma induced partial melting of mafic to intermediate lower crustal rocks, originating the Planalto and charnockitic magmas. The emplacement of these magmas occurred under active regional stress and resultant major shear zones found in the Canaã dos Carajás area. The close association between the Planalto suite and charnockitic rocks suggests that they are similar to the high temperature granite magmatism found near the borders of Precambrian domains with different ages and tectonic evolution or in their zone of interaction.

Forty schoolchildren aged from 7 to 9 years old were selected from a public school. After determining the initial O'Leary Plaque Index all schoolchildren were submitted to a program for oral hygiene through indirect instruction –"The Smiling Robot". The schoolchildren were divided into 2 groups: with and without motivation reinforcement. The index plaque exam was performed in both groups after 30, 60 and 90 days of the educational program. Comparing the groups, the plaque index decreasing could be observed in the group with reinforcement with statistically significant difference. For the group with reinforcement, statistically significant difference among the evaluations was found. For the group without reinforcement, significant decrease in the plaque index was found after 30 days when compared to th...

Research paper thumbnail of Geochemistry, geochronology, and origin of the Neoarchean Planalto Granite suite, Carajás, Amazonian craton: A-type or hydrated charnockitic granites?

Lithos, 2012

Hydrated charnockite Archean Carajás Amazonian craton New whole-rock geochemistry and LA-MC-ICPMS... more Hydrated charnockite Archean Carajás Amazonian craton New whole-rock geochemistry and LA-MC-ICPMS and Pb-evaporation geochronological data were obtained on zircon from the Neoarchean Planalto suite granites and associated charnockitic rocks of the Canaã area of the Carajás province, eastern Amazonian craton, Brazil.
