GIC are now one of the materials of choice for cementation of all ceramics, fiber reinforced composite posts and veneers. GICs are determined by unique properties like chemical adhesion to tooth and base metals, low thermal expansion coefficients similar to dentin and minimal microleakage at the tooth-enamel interface due to low shrinkage. Shrinkage strain is identified as the cause, and the associated stress as the mechanism for the loss of marginal adaption and cohesive fracture within the material. The aim of this study is to measure the strain and displacement field in a conventional GIC (Riva Luting, SDI, Australia) related to different cement diameter, using 3D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method. The experiment is done for samples with thickness of 1...

Research paper thumbnail of Discrete-Time Repetitive Control with a Range-Based Filter for Dual-Stage Systems

Building on the authors’ previous work, which focused on design and development of the RBF, this paper seeks to improve tracking performance by adding RC to the closed-loop control structure. The RBF is designed with the goal of allocating control effort to the individual actuators based on desired motion range. Assuming the reference trajectory is periodic, residual tracking error will persist in each cycle of the trajectory. RC has the ability to reduce the residual error with each operating cycle. The control algorithm is presented and experiments are carried out on a custom serial dual-stage nanopositioner in order to verify the proposed RC-RBF control method. Results show that the root-mean-square (RMS) tracking error can be improved with the addition of RC by up to 40% when compared to th...

Along with the great impact of 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on physical health, social functioning, and economy, this public health emergency has significant impact on mental health of people as well. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of outbreak-related information and public trust in the health system and preventive measures during the COVID-19 outbreak in Serbia in 2020 on levels of anxiety and depression in education, army and healthcare professionals. Methods. An anonymous questionnaire was disseminated to skilled professionals working in fields of education, army, and healthcare. The questionnaire included the Beck Anxiety Inventory, Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, as well as the section assessing the perceived disturbance by the outbreak-related information and the trust of participants in healthcare system and preventive measures proposed by the crisis team. The hip joint is one of the largest joints in the body and is a major weight-bearing joint. The f... more The hip joint is one of the largest joints in the body and is a major weight-bearing joint. The function of the hip is to withstand body weight during standing and walking; during single leg stance the hip joint must carry a load three times greater the body weight. However, Joint degeneration is the final phase of the joint cartilage destruction, leading to severe pain, loss of mobility, and sometimes even angular deformity of the limbs. The primary reasons for a large number of total hip replacements are osteoarthritis and osteoporosis of the femoral neck, which often leads to hip fractures. One of the most successful techniques to restore function of a degenerated joint is the total joint replacement. In this surgical procedure, diseased cartilage and parts of the bone are removed and replaced with an appropriate joint prosthesis. Several types of materials and techniques have been developed for this purpose: glass, polymer, metal alloy, ceramics, etc. Earliest prosthesis designs and biomaterials that have been developed to treat osteoarthritic hip degenerated joint surfaces were for the most part empirical and unsuccessful. Joint replacement heralded a revolution after the materials and replacement procedures developed by Sir John Charnley. A modern total hip prosthesis consists of a femoral and acetabular component, where the femoral head is made of cobalt-chrome alloy, alumina or zirconium, and the stem component is now usually made of Ti- or Co-Cr-based alloy. The search for improved designs and new hip implant biomaterials with better biocompatibility and more desirable mechanical properties is still underway.

ASME Letters in Dynamic Systems and Control

Dual-stage actuators, which combine two actuators with different characteristics, have gained int... more Dual-stage actuators, which combine two actuators with different characteristics, have gained interest due to their large-range, high-resolution positioning capabilities. Control of such systems is challenging because it requires balancing the relative contributions of the individual actuators in terms of speed, range, and precision. The most common approach is to allocate effort to the actuators based on frequency but this can lead to misallocation in the case of low-frequency short-range trajectories. In this paper, the problem of trajectory allocation in dual-stage actuator systems is addressed using a recently developed range-based filter. The theoretical basis of the range-based filter is rigorously derived for the first time and insights regarding its use, specifically its reinterpretation as a speed-based filter, and its range-frequency response characteristics are presented. The new analysis not only explains the behavior of the filter clearly, but it provides a more robust ...

Recent work by the authors has focused on range-based control of dual-stage actuators implemented as a prefilter, which assumes that each individual actuator has sensor feedback enabling them to be controlled separately. This article seeks to address the problem of range-based control of dual-stage systems when sensor measurements are only available from the total output of the system, a commonly encountered design. This is a significant departure from previous work since the range-based filter is included in the dual-stage system feedback loop and stability becomes a concern. In this article, the controller is presented, stability conditions are determined, and imaging experiments are performed on an atomic force microscope. Tracking results show that the root-mean-square tracking error for various triangular reference trajectories is improved with the presented range-based control structure by up to 50% compared to frequency-based methods.

Nanomaterials (fullerene, fullerol and methformin hydroxylate fullerene) were incorporated into commercial material for SCL (SL38) based on PHEMA, which were derived by the technology in the production lab of the company Soleko (Milan, Italy). Nanophotonic SCLs (SL38-A, SL38-B, SL38-C, respectively) were produced in the company Optix (Belgrade, Serbia) from the obtained materials. For the surface characterization of SCLs, AFM analysis and lacunarity method were performed. The results showed that for the SL38-B average roughness value is lower than those of SL38-A and SL38. The topography parameters of SL38-C were between the parameters of SL38-A and SL38-B. Lacunarity analysis of AFM images confirmed that SCLs surface state should belong to either group of adequate (slanted p-diagram) or inadequate (contorted p-diagram...

The current study aims at shedding light into the mechanisms behind the SBIH in a series of 4 experiments. Results showed an inversion effect for images of personalized women and mannequins, but not for sexualized women and houses. We presented natural scenes which always pictured two people, encompassing a wide range of facial attractiveness. This effect is often explained in terms of evolutionary adaptations, such as attractiveness being an indicator of good health. Other factors could influence this effect. In the present study, we explored the modulating role of sexual orientation on the effects of attractiveness on exploratory visual behavior. Heterosexual and homosexual men and women viewed natural-looking scenes that depicted either two women or two men who varied systematically in levels of attractiveness (based on a pre-study). Participants' eye movements and attractiveness ratings toward the faces of the depicted people were recorded. The results showed that although attractiveness had the largest influence on participants' behaviors, participants' sexual orientations strongly modulated the effects.
