We examined a total of 1056 newborns delivered at Jackson Memo- rial Hospital in Miami, Florida f... more We examined a total of 1056 newborns delivered at Jackson Memo- rial Hospital in Miami, Florida for the presence of skin and oral le- sions within 96 hours of birth to determine the frequency of derma- toses and other skin lesions found in normal newborns in South Florida. The seven skin findings most frequently seen were Mongo- lian spots (72.5%), sebaceous hyperplasia (38.7%), salmon patch (34.6%), Epstein's pearls (33.0%), erythema toxicum neonatorum (26.9%), linea nigra (24.5%), and transient pustular melanosis (18.1%) respectively. Among these findings, Mongolian spots, seba- ceous hyperplasia, salmon patch, erythema toxicum neonatorum, linea nigra and transient postular melanosis were statistically signifi- cantly more frequent among Blacks than among Caucasians. Recently, interest in the potential impact of the environment on our general health has heightene... more Recently, interest in the potential impact of the environment on our general health has heightened. Particular focus has been directed toward environmental skin injuries because the integument, the only organ of the body that is constantly exposed to the surrounding environment, directly demonstrates the damaging effects of the environment and thereby allows for direct visual recognition by both physicians and laypersons. The characteristic cutaneous features, physiologic responses, therapeutic approaches to promote healing, and preventive measures that may be taken to avoid future environmental injury are discussed. The scope of environmental injuries to the skin is extremely vast; therefore, the focus of this review is limited to cutaneous injuries that may result as a consequence of ultraviolet irradiation, marine life, and electrical forces.

The ethanol and acetone/water extracts of Cistus ladanifer and Arbutus unedo L. were characterise... more The ethanol and acetone/water extracts of Cistus ladanifer and Arbutus unedo L. were characterised concerning the total phenolic and flavonoid contents, presenting relatively high values when compared with other species described in the literature. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method in terms of EC50, using trolox as standard reference. The extracts of both species showed scavenging activity for the DPPH radical.Extracts bioactivities were also tested by the evaluation of the viability effects on human fibroblasts primary culture cells. Viability studies were performed by MTT method. Both extracts are bioactive; C. ladanifer extracts were associated with an inhibitory effect and A. unedo L. were associated with an induced effect on cells viability.
