Leaf Extracts of Cistus ladanifer Exhibit Potent Antioxidant and Antiproliferative Activities against Liver, Prostate and Breast Cancer Cells

Applied Sciences

Chemical composition, antioxidant, and antiproliferative properties of C. ladanifer crude extracts, including hexane (Hex), dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (E.A) and ethanol (EtOH) were investigated. The chemical composition of C. ladanifer crude extracts was determined by use of GC-MS, whereas DPPH and FRAP assays were employed to determine its antioxidant capacity. The obtained results showed that the ethanolic extract exhibited a significant antioxidant effect recording an IC50 value of 266.6 ± 0.828 μg/mL with DPPH assay, and a higher reducing power 0.494 ± 0.035 using the FRAP test. The extracts exhibited significant antiproliferative activity against three cancer cell lines. The DCM extract exhibited the highest total polyphenol content (76.066 ± 9.978 μg AGE/mg) and was revealed to be more effective against HepG2 (31.54 ± 0.242 μg/mL). The Hex extract that presented the highest flavonoid content (50.209 ± 3.805 μg CE/mg) exhibited the highest antiproliferative activity a...

REACTIVE OXYGEN AND NITROGEN SPECIES SCAVENGING AND ANTICANCER POTENTIAL OF CISSUS QUADRANGULARIS L. AGAINST EAC CELL LINE Original Article

2014

Objective: To investigate the in vitro antioxidant and anticancer activity of chloroform and ethanol extracts of Cissus quadranqularis L. leaves. Methods: Phytochemicals were analysed by using standard methods. In Vitro antioxidant studies were carried out for the chloroform and ethanol extracts of the Cissus quadranqularis L using various free radical models such a DPPH, Reducing power assay, Nitric oxide, Hydrogen peroxide, Superoxide scavenging and ABTS. In vitro cytotoxic assay such as trypan blue dye exclusion and MTT assays were carried out both ethanol and chloroform extract against EAC cell line. Results: The preliminary phytochemical screening of Chloroform extract contains alkaloids, sugar, quinines, steroids and tannins. Ethanol extract showed the presence of alkaloids, coumarin, quinines, steroids and sugar. The result revealed that the ethanolic extracts have significant antioxidant potential than chloroform extract. The result revealed that the ethanol extracts of Ciss...

Antioxidant, Membrane Stabilizing and Cytotoxic Activities of Cissus adnata (Roxb.)

Dhaka University Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2016

The methanol extracts of whole plant of Cissus adnata (Roxb.) and their organic and aqueous soluble partitioning materials were evaluated for antioxidant, cytotoxic and membrane stabilizing properties. In the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the aqueous extract of whole plant of C. adnata displayed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 4.17 ?g/ml, while the pet ether soluble fraction showed significant lethality to brine shrimps having LC50 value of 1.02 ?g/ml, as compared to the standard vincristine sulphate (LC50 value of 0.44 ?g/ml). In the evaluation for membrane stabilizing property, the pet ether soluble fraction of methanol extract of the whole plant inhibited 67.43 % and 56.60 % hypotonic solution- and heat-induced haemolysis of RBCs, respectively.Dhaka Univ. J. Pharm. Sci. 15(1): 69-71, 2016 (June)

In vitro antioxidant activity and GC-MS analysis of the ethanol and aqueous extracts of Cissus cornifolia (Baker) Splanch (Vitaceae) parts

2015

The study was intended to explore the antioxidant potential and phytochemical content of the ethanol and aqueous extracts of the leaf and root samples of Cissus cornifolia (Baker) Splanch (Vitaceae) across a series of four in vitro models. The results showed that all the extracts had reducing power (Fe(3+) - Fe2+) and DPPH, hydroxyl and nitric oxide radical scavenging abilities to varying extents. However, the ethanol root extract had more potent antioxidant power in all the experimental models than other extracts and possessed a higher total phenol content of 136.1 ± 6.7 mg/g. The GC-MS analysis of the aqueous and ethanol extracts of the roots indicated the presence of the common aromatic phenolic compounds, pyrogallol, resorcinol and catechol, a fatty acid, n-hexadecanoic acid and an aldehyde, vanillin. Data from this study suggest that both the leaves and roots of C. cornifolia possessed anti-oxidative activities with the best anti-oxidant activity being exhibited by the ethanoli...

First phytochemical study and biological activity of the leaves ethanolic extract from Cissus spinosa Cambess

Scientia Medica, 2020

AIMS: The objective of this study was to identify the phytochemical profile and to evaluate the biological effects of the crude ethanolic extract (EE) and the ethanolic fraction (EF) of leaves of the species Cissus spinosa Cambess, after oxidative stress induced by cyclophosphamide (CP) in mice.METHODS: Phytochemical profile was performed detecting functional groups and, analysis of total flavonoids and phenols concentration, as well as the antiradical activity in EE and EF. The phytochemical characterization was done for the identification of flavonoids present in the leaves of the plant. In the biochemical tests, hematological parameters, glucose and total cholesterol dosages in plasma, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants and lipid damage marker were evaluated in different tissues (liver, kidney and heart), besides genotoxic and immunological analyzes. The animals received 15 days of treatment, via gavage, with EE (50 mg kg-1) or EF (50 mg kg-1) and on the 15th day, an intrap...
