Confining the polymer in random porous matrices of pore sizes ranging from 2.5 nm to 100 nm permits us to study the effect of polarons and bipolarons on the observed dielectric relaxation processes. Measurements on bulk samples show that doping leads to an increase in the number of polarons and bipolarons. These charge carriers are responsible for the observed dielectric relaxation and the relaxation times get faster with increased doping. A progressively non-Debye like relaxation behavior is observed with increased doping due to the presence of multiple paths for the system to relax. Preliminary studies on the dielectric permittivity of emeraldine base polyaniline in bulk and confined to 2.5 nm pores at 300 K show that confinement leads to smaller observed relaxation times. Results on these and oth...

The differential threshold in frequencies of 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 4,000 Hz should not be above 10 dB in two or more of these frequencies. Minimal speech recognition must be 50% or more. Middle ear function and anatomy must be normal and there must be no evidence that hearing loss is of retrocochlear origin. Use of a hearing aid for at least 6 months in the ear receiving the implant must be proven to be unsatisfactory by a hearing test. Expectations must be realistic and vestibular alterations must be excluded.

Our objective was to determine if the administration of an enriched dairy preparation with a supplement of soluble fibre (Naturfibra) [inulin and digestion resistant maltodextrin (Fibersol 2)], improves primary chronic constipation. Prospective, randomized, double blind clinical trial randomized with dietary intervention in 32 subjects with constipation according to the Rome II criteria. Thirty two subjects (men 4; women 28) with an average age of 47 +/- 15 years were randomly divided in two homogeneous groups. A type of milk (A or B) was assigned to each group. Group A received fibre enriched semi-skimmed milk; Group B received semi skimmed milk. The subjects drank half a litre of milk per day during 20 days, meaning that those who drank the enriched milk ingested 20 grams of fibre a day. The subjects that presented straining at defecation (p < 0.001), sensation of incomplete evacuation (p < 0.001), sensation of obstruction in...

We report the case of a 81 year old male admitted to the hospital for fever, abdominal pain and jaundice. An abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography demonstrated multiple splenic abscesses. The splenectomy and antibiotics were a very effective therapy. The percutaneous drainage as an alternative may be appropriate only in selected patients, in order to preserve splenic function.

Histological and hematological studies suggest that a hypercoagulable state is involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease. However, the exact mechanism of hypercoagulability is still unknown. During the acute recurrences there is an increase of factor VIII, fibrinogen, platelet, factor V and decrease of antithrombin III. Hematologic disorders seem markedly correlated with the activity of the disease. We report on two patients with Inflammatory bowel disease and hypercoagulable state. We review the literature and discuss about the pathogenic mechanisms of such complication.

Patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome present with varying degrees of symptomatology that can be divided into the following categories: fulminant, acute, subacute and chronic. The subacute form is the most common presentation. A majority of patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome have an underlying hypercoagulability state. We present the case of a young woman with Crohn's disease on oral contraceptives who developed bilateral pulmonary thromboembolism and Budd-Chiari syndrome.

The parameter describing the doping is defined as y s H r N. The samples were synthesized with y s 0.00, 0.07 and 0.50. It is suggested that the presence of polarons and bipolarons are responsible for the dielectric relaxation mechanism as well as the frequency and temperature dependence of conductivity. A broadening in the spectrum of relaxation times of the dielectric relaxation process due to charge motion via creationrannihilation of polarons and bipolarons increases with increasing doping. The subsequent diffusion of polarons and bipolarons become faster as doping increases.
