In the lecture, I discuss the dysfunctional learning that occurs in the interaction between the biological "software" of survival/adaptation, seek/reward, and attachment, developed in the brain by natural selection, and some traits of human culture. This dysfunctional learning results in psychopathological syndromes and other disorders and generates maladapted paradigms that block the growth and well-being in people. I discuss the relations between the lecture's themes and the age old problem of the brain/consciousness/self relations. I will talk about practical techniques to neutralize the growth/blocking paradigms and turn them into paradigms that enhance well-being.

The lecture deals with the age-old problem of the self/brain relationships and its impact upon psychotherapy. Following Gell-mann's approach (1994) it is suggested that the scientific project is composed of a hierarchy of complex systems, and that the brain and the self, being parts of the scientific project (biology, psychology), form complex adaptive systems(CAS) which oppose the linear causality and the Question "Where Action Begins in the Brain or in the Mind"? becomes irrelevant. As the brain and the self are CAS there are common systemic mechanism effecting both the self and the brain such as: self-regulation, self-organization, emergence, actions according to pre-established patterns, and more. The common mechanisms form a meta-language by which the self , brain and body can communicate to effectively generate desired changes

The relationship between positive psychology (PP) coaching psychology (CP) and neuroscience resea... more The relationship between positive psychology (PP) coaching psychology (CP) and neuroscience research are discussed here.
Notwithstanding its great popularity, PP is often criticized by colleagues for circular methodology, elitism, promoting the science of "happyiology "and more. It is suggested that PP research results, generating "positive" knowledge, have a small impact on changing human behaviors. Human behaviors change following assimilation of experiences that generate new learning in consciousness following assimilation of experiences that generate new learning in consciousness and new neuronal patterns in the brain like through the implementation of psychotherapy and coaching techniques.
It is discussed that the potential to positive behavioral change is in the right activation of the evolutionarily installed command systems in the brain of search/reward; attachment; and survival and not by the validation of new or old positive knowledge

In our rapidly evolving world, traditional psychology is struggling to meet the challenges of the present, such as the search for authentic meaning in our digital culture. In a digital culture where billions of people scroll through their social media feeds daily and AI chatbots carry on millions of conversations, traditional psychology is at a crossroads as people unknowingly lose their psychological freedom, autonomy and authentic meaning. Although today's psychological science collaborates with neuroscience and the medical world, it does not seem to integrate the complex, interconnected human relationships between organism, brain, self, consciousness and culture.
My forthcoming nonfiction book, "Wired to Be Free," an exploration of integral psychology, aims to address these issues and weave together the interrelated dynamics of brain, organism, consciousness, self, and culture.
I am attaching a preface, synopsis and a chapter from the book entitled: Chapter Eleven: The Digital Era's Sickness: Populism, the Dark Triad and the Collapse of Truth. and will hear your ideas and thoughts on this topic.

The Mindful Brain is a meeting place between professional basic issues of psychology, positive psychology, psychotherapy, mind and brain, and human life, from the 21st-century perspective, together with a futuristic fictional story. In this excerpt from the book, Norman, the main protagonist of this book, finds himself in an exploratory staggering voyage trying to delve into the age-old enigma that occupied the best minds throughout history, about the apparently unintelligible relations between human consciousnesses, which is part of the self, and the human brain. It is a puzzle described by D. Searle (1997) as: "How does the brain get over the hump between electro-chemistry to feelings?" and by G. Edelman (2000) in his poetic words as: "How does matter become imagination?" Meeting the old wise enigmatic Kim inspired Norman to turn his self-search journey into an amazing, mind-blowing ordeal. He understood that when people ask that question, they refer to the high functions of consciousness such as value system, meanings, authenticity, selfactualization, etc. Scientists are not overwhelmed by the relations between the animal brain and its consciousness (agreeing that animals also have some form of consciousness). Murray Gell-Mann gave the first key in deciphering this enigma. "The Scientific Project," said Gell-Mann in "the Quark and the Jaguar" (1995), " is composed of one integrative system made of different dynamic subsystems , placed in hierarchical order, ranging from particle physics, through chemistry, biology, to psychology," (to which we can add sociology and ecology at the top). Each discipline contains the laws of the discipline "below" it; however, each "higher "discipline deals with additional information and develops new specific laws that construe its particular observations. The leaping Jaguar's behavior could be understood by the laws

impact upon psychotherapy. Following Gell-mann‘s suggestion that the scientific
project is composed of a hierarchy of complex systems, the author acknowledges
that the brain and the self, being parts of the scientific project (biology,
psychology), form complex adaptive systems (CAS). While each system
in the scientific pyramid cannot exist without the lower, the “higher“ systems
comprise the lower ones plus additional information. CAS oppose linear causality
and the question “Where Action Begins in the Brain or in the Mind“?
becomes irrelevant. While the brain is part of the biological system, the self is
influenced in addition by the psycho/socio/cultural systems generated by many
brains/minds in history. Mindfulness, imagery, and stress-reduction demonstrate
that the self can generates changes in the brain and the body (brain neuroplasticity,
neurogenesis) while paradoxically it is dependent upon them for
its existence. There are common systemic mechanism effecting both the self
and the brain such as: self-regulation, self-organization, emergence, actions
according to pre-established patterns, and more. The common mechanisms
form a meta-language by which the self, brain and body can communicate to

It examines the unprecedented exponential expansion of coaching on the one hand, while simultaneously, the mixed attitudes by the public at large, and the scepticism within the academic community. It is suggested that the main essence of coaching psychology is the humanistic psychology aspiration towards self-actualisation integrated into a short-term and practical strategy for achieving it. It is argued that both, coaching and psychotherapy serve to restore the impaired learning process of the individual. The learning process becomes disturbed when blocked by maladaptive, outdated paradigms of meaning which are no longer relevant (gremlins, success blockers, defence mechanisms), and which were relevant in the past. The maladaptive paradigms impair the assimilation of new experiences and their transformation into well-adapted paradigms. The restoration of an efficient learning process enables reparation of deficient functions (in psychotherapy) and selfactualisation (in life coaching). Theorisation of a revised approach to existential/humanistic coaching psychology suggests that this approach is sustained by other disciplines which are based on scientifically valid research methodology.

The relationship between positive psychology (PP) coaching psychology (CP) and neuroscience resea... more The relationship between positive psychology (PP) coaching psychology (CP) and neuroscience research are discussed here. Notwithstanding the tremendous contribution of research in positive psychology, the field has often encountered peer criticism about the methodology and its latent prescriptive tendency which should be avoided in standard scientific research. In addition to that, it is discussed here that the discovery of new scientific knowledge does not significantly change people’s behavior. Human behaviors change following the assimilation of new experiences that generate new learning in the self simultaneously with new neuronal networks in the brain for example as happens in psychotherapy and different forms of training. It is discussed that the potential for positive behavioral change is in the activation of the evolutionarily installed command systems in the brain of search/reward; attachment; and survival and not by the validation of new or old positive knowledge. In Dynamic Positive Coaching Psychology, a very practical toolbox is presented through a developmental approach aiming to generate authentic meanings in the client’s life through the implementation of different techniques of psychotherapy at different stages of the coaching process.

Norman, the main protagonist of the story, is an international press correspondent who came to Israel a few years ago and already feels himself part of the Israeli reality. Norman is a renowned, successful journalist who loves the witty mental conversations with his spiritual mentor, Sam, an old and wise psychologist, whom he befriended since coming to Israel. After his girlfriend Tal hits the road on a voyage of self-exploration to the famous Ashram on the island of Lesbos, Norman decides to leave on his own lifetime journey to look for answers to existential dilemmas that have preoccupied him since long ago. Norman felt the need to explore life and understand the twists and turns of human behavior more deeply and its roots in the brain and consciousness. After a brief but staggering visit to an old friend who found his safe-haven in a small village in Brittany, France, Norman left for Paris, where he met the enigmatic amazing old Kim. Kim presents Norman with bewildering existential Koan riddles. These pointed Norman to a new way of thinking which went beyond the common conceptual paradigms and opened the gate to his in-depth understanding of his inner world and the world in which we live.

The author argues that the problem lies in the higher functions of consciousness, which are not easily explained by basic perception or animal instinct. They suggest that the question of whether brain activity precedes conscious activity or vice versa is misplaced, as both are complex systems that operate under laws such as synergy, co-evolution, interrelations, and interdependence. The higher functions of consciousness, such as the value system, future planning, ideologies, worldviews, meaning, self-actualization, etc. do not originate in the individual brain but are intrinsically related to a person's language and culture.
