Suffering is an inherent reality within Asian societies, stemming from various economic, politica... more Suffering is an inherent reality within Asian societies, stemming from various economic, political, social, cultural, and religious factors that contribute to the widespread poverty in Asia. While some individuals accept this suffering as a normal part of human life, others strive to escape the suffering. The concept of overcoming adversity is referred to as survival theology. This study explores the theology of survival through the lenses of migration theology, Pentecostalism, and Gawai Dayak culture. Employing a descriptive qualitative research method and a constructive theological approach, this study aims to understand how survival theology can be contextualized within these diverse frameworks. The findings reveal that communal unity serves as a powerful force to help individuals sustain suffering. Additionally, personal faith and trust provide additional for enduring hardhips as part of God's plan.

The idea of Christ as the Head of all things does not contain Christ's dominance over the universe. This idea is panentheism, in the way that Christ is at the same time the Head of the church and of the universe. This idea provides the theological foundation for a missional church. The church's mission is one of the manifestations of missio Dei in this world because this concept teaches the church to direct its mission to the whole world.

The Church's encounter with culture makes it possible for the Church to accept or reject cultures... more The Church's encounter with culture makes it possible for the Church to accept or reject cultures. HKBP Church is one of the tribal churches in Indonesia that accepts and takes care of the Toba Batak tradition. The HKBP Church's acceptance of culture has been accompanied by prohibitions and teachings in the Confession Book and Ruhut Parmahanion Paminsangon (RPP) books. However, there are still congregations that carry out occult practices. This article aims to discuss the current and future manners of the HKBP Church towards occult practices and exorcism in the Toba Batak community. The author will use a qualitative method with literature studies, namely contextualization efforts based on Stephen B. Bevans' theory, especially the synthesis model and based on Richard Niebuhr's views on Christ and Culture, Edgar H. Schein on the cultural structure and Martin Luther on Exorcism. This study finds that the Toba Batak tradition contains positive and negative values. Therefore, this study suggests that the Church needs to conduct a cultural review to find the correct tradition, and the Church must take part in the practice of exorcism.

Dalam memberikan perbandingannya, penulis secara konsisten menunjukkan persamaan, atau lebih tepatnya, keserupaan maupun perbedaan, dan jika ada, pertentangan, antara Taurat dalam Perjanjian Lama dengan hukum-hukum dari budaya atau peradaban di sekitarnya pada zaman Israel kuno. Apa dikerjakan dalam buku ini memiliki manfaat yang sangat besar bagi pembaca, bukan hanya bagi para akademisi maupun pendeta secara khusus, namun juga bagi jemaat secara umum, terutama untuk mengetahui peradaban yang ada di Timur Tengah pada zaman Israel kuno, khususnya terkait relasi sosial-ekonomi antar masyarakat. Saya menjadi begitu terkagum dengan kemajuan peradaban yang dimiliki oleh masyarakat Timur Tengah kuno lebih dari tiga milenia yang lalu. Karya yang merupakan hasil dari kerja keras ini patut diapresiasi sebesar-besarnya dan tentu memberi kontribusi bagi studi Perjanjian Lama di Indonesia. Buku ini tampak memiliki beberapa perspektif teologis yang mendasarinya. Pertama, terdapat gagasan kontinuitas dalam melihat Perjanjian Lama dan Perjanjian Baru. Understanding the eschatology of each group or ecclesiastical school is quite diverse because thi... more Understanding the eschatology of each group or ecclesiastical school is quite diverse because this subject is indeed a difficult thing. This paper, Pengaruh Kosmologi Bumi Datar dalam Eskatologi Alkitab (The Influence of Flat Earth Cosmology in Bible Eschatology), aims to re-explore biblical texts relating to eschatology or the end of time. Of all the biblical texts available, it is found that the end times do not talk about the destruction of the earth and/or the universe and replace it with something completely or absolutely new, but only include natural disasters without destroying the absolute earth and/or the universe, so it is the renewal of the earth/universe that exists, now, inhabited by humans. This paper is the result of library research using the historical-critical hermeneutic method of the biblical texts used, including the two-source theory for the synoptic gospels. What is intended in this paper is that many eschatological texts or the texts discuss about the end times in the Bible, both Old Testament as also the New Testament, are strongly influenced by the understanding of flat-earth cosmology, so that reading of these biblical texts should not be carried out using the understanding of modern round-earth cosmology round.

Gereja HKBP salah satu gereja kesukuan di Indonesia yang menerima dan menjaga tradisi Batak Toba. Penerimaan Gereja HKBP terhadap budaya telah disertai dengan larangan dan pengajaran yang tertuang dalam buku Konfessi dan Ruhut Parmahanion Paminsangon (RPP), namun masih ada jemaat yang melaksanakan praktik okultisme. Tulisan ini bertujuan mempercakapkan sikap Gereja HKBP saat ini dan di waktu yang akan datang terhadap praktik okultisme dan eksorsisme dalam masyarakat Batak Toba. Penulis akan menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan studi kepustakaan, yaitu upaya kontekstualisasi berbasis teori Stephen B.
