In this paper a procedure is presented to evaluate the remaining life of both flexible and semi-r... more In this paper a procedure is presented to evaluate the remaining life of both flexible and semi-rigid pavement, from tests carried out with the fwd. The pavements are schematized as an elastic four layer body. For the bituminous and hydraulic bound layers, a linear elastic law was adopted whilst a non-linear elastic law was used for the unbound layers (subbase and subgrade). The behaviour of a very large number of pavements under fwd loading was analysed using a finite element model. These pavements consist of layers of different thickness and modulus, chosen from a very large range. From this analysis and using the multiple regression technique it was possible to find analytical functions between deflections and moduli. The developed procedure permits an evaluation of the pavement layers moduli using these functions and the deflections measured under the fwd load (pastrev program). The present study follows the trend of the general practice and, in particular has as its purpose... more The present study follows the trend of the general practice and, in particular has as its purpose the identification of a method of preparation for dynamic creep test samples which dispenses with the need for special equipment and is at the same time reliable. A method of static compaction for the preparation of the representative test samples with aggregates of different natures (crushed and rounded) based on the ASTN norms, different from that first adopted, was finalized.

A new Pavement Management System called "AIRPMS" (AIRport Pavement Management System) w... more A new Pavement Management System called "AIRPMS" (AIRport Pavement Management System) with a related software for Windows has been developed for airport pavements. This PMS is based on specific procedures for input data processing, structural deterioration models, structural performance of maintenance strategies, and optimization algorithms. Pavements are divided into sections with homogeneous typology, subgrade, traffic and history. The optimization model is "disaggregated": maintenance strategy is definited for every homogeneous section, using a new structural deterioration model. If historical data on pavement condition are available, it's possible to fit the structural deterioration curves to the effective performance of pavements, and develop appropriate maintenance strategies. Dans cette etude les auteurs presentent sommairement la partie relative au recueil des donnees, qui est actuellement tout a fait operationnelle tous les criteres de codification ayant deja ete definis. Puis les auteurs mettent l'accent sur les aspects lies a la gestion des informations et au developpement aussi bien de programmes de controle structural que de technique speciales de surveillance.

It is experimentally established that the fatigue strength of concrete depends on the magnitude o... more It is experimentally established that the fatigue strength of concrete depends on the magnitude of variation between the maximum and minimum stress values applied in a load cycle. To define test conditions in these terms reference is made to a stress value r, derived from the ratio between the maximum and minimum values. Most fatigue laws used in pavement design are based on tests conducted with R approximately equal to 0. This however does not correspond to the effective stress conditions of a concrete pavement in service, since the traffic induced stresses are additional to existing stresses caused by temperature, for which the effective stress cycle ratio r is generally different to 0. This paper presents a fatigue law for the design of concrete pavements which takes account of these considerations. (TRRL)

It is commonly believed that rigid pavements cannot be built on subgrades which are still subject... more It is commonly believed that rigid pavements cannot be built on subgrades which are still subject to vertical movements caused by settlement. There are two types of post constructional settlement : uniform settlement and differential settlement. This paper examines : (1) the effects of the differential settlement of the pavement subgrade. A distinction is made between differential settlement with a wavelength comparable to the length of the concrete slab and settlement with a broader wavelength; (2) the movements of the slab at the joints, due to subgrade deformation, which must be compatible with the type of joint. The joints must allow for the rotation of the two adjoining slabs. This may be possible if the gap between the joints is sufficiently wide; and (3) warping of the slab caused by thermal gradients. From a calculation of the stresses due to traffic loads, a finite element model is presented for ... more From a calculation of the stresses due to traffic loads, a finite element model is presented for evaluating how the distribution of these stresses is modified by the presence of transverse cracks in the cement bound base. The model is also used to evaluate the damage caused by different axle loads. It is shown that in pavements which conform to the structural behaviour forecast by this model, the ratios between the equivalence coefficients of the loads are significantly different from those adopted for flexible pavements. A model is also presented for evaluating the rate of propagation of reflection cracking in layers of different thicknesses in some rigid pavements.

This paper describes a new type of pavement, pcp (polyfunctional composite pavement), used for th... more This paper describes a new type of pavement, pcp (polyfunctional composite pavement), used for the first time in Italy on the a24-a2 section of the fiano-san cesario bypass. The main contribution to bearing capacity is a continuously reinforced concrete slab. At equal thicknesses of the bound layers the durability of pcp is much superior to that of semirigid pavements. A porous bituminous wearing course is laid on the slab, achieving the following additional functions with regard to traditional wearing courses: reduction of water film, attenuation of tyre noise, and less spray. The composition of pcp and the main objectives for its introduction, its behaviour and the design method used, are described and illustrated.
