(Asteraceae), popularly known as "assa-peixe", is a plant species used in Brazilian traditional medicine for the treatment of cutaneous damage, cicatrization, inflammation, and rheumatism. Based on these ethnopharmacological findings, the current study evaluated the topical anti-inflammatory effects of the hexane (HEVP) and ethyl acetate (EAEVP) extracts from V. polyanthes leaves in experimental models of skin inflammation. Chemical characterization was carried out by HPLC-UV/DAD analysis. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using Croton oil-, arachidonic acid (AA)-, phenol-, ethyl phenylpropiolate (EPP)-, and capsaicin-induced ear edema models in mice. Histopathological evaluation and measurements of myeloperoxidase (MPO) and N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase (NAG) enzymes were also performed. Rutin, luteolin, and apigenin were identified in EAEVP. Topically applied HEVP and EAEVP significantly (p < 0.05, p < 0.01 or p < 0.001) reduced e...

Early Years

ABSTRACT This article aims to discuss the quality of early childhood education and care in Brazil... more ABSTRACT This article aims to discuss the quality of early childhood education and care in Brazil and the process of infants’ and toddlers’ Inserimento to daycare. The theoretical framework of our arguments is based on the notion of quality of child education as a negotiated concept, and by the Italian concept of Inserimento. The methodology is based on the Mosaic Approach, a participative method to listen to young children. As part of the methodology, we participated in the inserimento process in five municipalities in southeastern Brazil, from 2016 and 2020. Data analysis was based on the pedagogy of listening and on studies on gender and racial relationships. The results show how laws, normative documents, family expectations, planning and routine of childhood education, available toys, space, babies, families, and professionals creates a complex mosaic of discourses about what constitutes the quality of childhood education in the babies' first days in daycare centers.

Objectives: To evaluate the relationship between cigarette smoking status and in-hospital outcomes of patients treated with STEMI at a tertiary hospital. Methods: Prospective cohort study of a single center. Patients admitted with STEMI between September 2016 and September 2019 were included. Smoking status was categorized as never-smokers, current smokers and former smokers. Clinical characteristics, length of stay, all-cause mortality and major cardiovascular events (MACE, defined as the composite of total mortality, re-infarction, stroke and cardiac arrest) during the in-hospital period were evaluated. Chi-square test, ANOVA and Tukey test, and the Kruskal-Wallis H test were used, as appropriate. P Results: Of the 230 patients hospitalized with STEMI in the period, 92 (40%) were currently smoking and 63 (27.3%) were former smokers. Current smokers (57.2±11.4 years) were younger than never-smokers (63.7±11.4 years) (p = 0.001) and former smokers (64.8±9.6 years) (p Conclusion: Compared to never-smokers and former smokers, current smoking is associated with the occurrence of STEMI at a younger age and with similar in-hospital mortality.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the inoculation effect of G. diazotrophicus strain Pal5 on the amelioration of drought stress and root development in red rice (Oryza sativa L.). Methods: The experimental treatments consist of red rice plants inoculated with and without strain Pal5 in presence and absence of water restriction. Physiological, biochemical, and molecular analyses of plant roots were carried out, along with measurements of growth and biochemical components. Results: The plants showed a positive response to the bacterial inoculation, with root growth promotion and induction of tolerance to drought. An increase in the root area and higher levels of osmoprotectant solutes were observed in roots. Bacterial inoculation increased the drought tolerance a...

Therefore, it is a possible treatment for septic peritonitis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of ceftriaxone as an adjuvant treatment in horses with septic peritonitis.MethodsTwenty-six horses with clinical signs, sonography and/or laboratory findings of septic peritonitis were included. Peritoneal fluid was collected for microbiological culture and in vitro microbial sensitivity profile assessment. Daily intraperitoneal administration of ceftriaxone (25 mg/kg) was initiated with supportive and systemic antimicrobial treatment. The animals were divided into three groups: group 1—gastrointestinal tract injuries and abdominal surgery (excluding perforations/ruptures); group 2—not related to changes in the gastrointestinal tract; group 3—secondary to intestinal rupture and/or faeces contamination.ResultsThe mean success rate of the tr...
