Data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests. The sample comprised 14 men and 27 women with a mean age of 38.9 years. The posterior area of the mandible was the most affected anatomic area, with 36 cases and the multilocular radiographic was the most common subtype (79.4%), followed by the unilocular subtype (20.6%). Complains of pain were reported in only 12 patients. The histopathological findings were: 39% follicular, 34.1% plexiform, and 14.6% unicystic. The treatment with marginal resection was the most performed with 60.6%, followed by curettage plus cryotherapy with 21.2%. It was observed that the average age was higher for cases of multilocular radiolucency. A significant association was found between the type of treatment and radiographic appearance (p < 0.05).

As variations in phenology and plant height may influence QTL detection for the target traits, QTL for flowering time and plant height were introduced as cofactors in QTL analyses for yield and stay green. All but one of the flowering time QTL were detected near yield and stay green QTL. Similar co-localization was observed for two plant height QTL. QTL analysis for yield, using flowering time/plant height cofactors, led to yield QTL on chromosomes 2, 3, 6, 8 and 10. For stay green, QTL on chromosomes 3, 4, 8 and 10 were not related to differences in flowering time/plant height. The physical positions for markers in QTL regions projected on the sorghum genome suggest that the previously detected plant height QTL, Sb-HT9-1, and Dw2, in addition to the maturity gene, Ma5, had a major confounding impact on the expression of yield and stay green QTL. Co-localization between an apparently novel stay green QTL and a yield QTL on chromosome 3 suggests there is potential for indirect selection based on stay green to improve drought tolerance in sorghum. Our QTL study was carried out with a moderately sized population and spanned a limited geographic range, but still the results strongly emphasize the necessity of corrections for phenology in QTL mapping for drought tolerance traits in sorghum.

Recently, it was published that calcium oxalate accumulates in infected cacao tissues during the progression of Witches' Broom disease (WBD). In the present work we report that the hemibiotrophic basidiomycete Moniliophthora perniciosa, the causal agent of WBD, produces calcium oxalate crystals. These crystals were initially observed by polarized light microscopy of hyphae growing on a glass slide, apparently being secreted from the cells. The analysis was refined by Scanning electron microscopy and the compositon of the crystals was confirmed by energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry. The production of oxalate by M. perniciosa was reinforced by the identification of a putative gene coding for oxaloacetate acetylhydrolase, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of oxaloacetate to oxalate and acetate. This gene was shown to be expressed in the biotrophic-like mycelia, which in planta occupy the intercellular middle-lamella space, a region filled with pectin. Taken together, our results suggest that oxalate production by M. perniciosa may play a role in the WBD pathogenesis mechanism. M. C. S. do Rio Á B. V. de Oliveira Á D. P. T. de Tomazella Á

Monocytes constitute the main known DC precursors in blood and their infiltration into tissues is up-regulated during inflammation. During this process, the local production of mediators, like prostaglandins (PGs), influence significantly DC differentiation and function. In the present paper we show that treatment of blood adherent mononuclear cells with 10microM indomethacin, a dose achieved in human therapeutic settings, causes monocytes&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; progressive death but does not affect DCs viability or cell surface phenotype. This resistance of DCs was observed both for cells differentiated in vitro from blood monocytes and for a population with DCs characteristics already present in blood. This phenomenon could affect the local balance of antigen-presenting cells, influence the induction and pattern of immune responses developed under the treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and, therefore, deserves further investigation.

Class 1 integrons from three multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica strains (Salmonella enterica serovars Newport [strain 62], Typhimurium var. Copenhagen [strain 629], and Lansing [strain 803], originating from Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Taiwan, respectively) were characterized. Southern hybridization of plasmids isolated from these strains, using a class 1 integron probe, showed that trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and streptomycin resistance genes were located on a megaplasmid in strain 629. Our study indicates that imported seafood could be a reservoir for Salmonella isolates resistant to multiple antibiotics.

The parasite is able to infect macrophages and dendritic cells for dispersal throughout the body. However, the molecular principals or outcomes of the subversion of the host cell are largely unknown. We evaluated the involvement of host invasive machinery in the migration of T. gondii infected murine cells from a monocytic/macrophage lineage. Migration in Matrigel of infected macrophages was augmented after 48 h of infection, and inhibition of metalloproteinases abolished migration. We also demonstrated that T. gondii infection induces a decreasing of CD44 at cell surface independent of the ERK signaling pathway, and that secretion of active MMP9 is augmented upon infection. Infected macrophages showed increased expression of MT1-MMP and ADAM10 membrane matrix metalloproteinases. Furthermore, processing of pro-alpha v and pro-beta 3 in T. gondii infected cells seems to depend on metalloproteinases to generate functional mature integrin alpha v beta 3 molecules, with no evidence of the involvement of proprotein convertase pathway.
