This thesis examines the work of Silvia Ballestra, Rossana Campo and Isabella Santacroce within t... more This thesis examines the work of Silvia Ballestra, Rossana Campo and Isabella Santacroce within the context of the so-called ‘pulp generation’ of writers who emerged in 1990s Italy. My analysis addresses three main concerns of these writers: youth culture, gender, and literary legacies. The Introduction provides the methodological coordinates of my study, stating my initial aims, tracing the evolution of my interest in the writers and of my approach to their narratives, and outlining the structure of the thesis. Chapter 1 identifies themes and styles common to the ‘pulp generation’, referring to the work of, among others, Niccolo Ammaniti, Silvia Ballestra, Enrico Brizzi, Rossana Campo, Giuseppe Culicchia, Aldo Nove, Isabella Santacroce, Tiziano Scarpa and Simona Vinci. I focus on the critical reception of these writers and the support they received from the members of 1960-70s avant-garde, Gruppo 63. This article analyzes Rossana Campo’s Mentre la mia bella dorme (1999), Duro come l’amore (2005) ... more This article analyzes Rossana Campo’s Mentre la mia bella dorme (1999), Duro come l’amore (2005) and Il posto delle donne (2013) in the context of Campo’s work in general, showing how her use of crime genre conventions is specifically designed to reveal flaws and pitfalls inherent in romance narratives. By establishing a complex dialogue between noir and rosa, and by offsetting both traditions with female protagonists who question in different ways the heterosexual paradigm, Campo’s crime novels occupy a unique place in her production, especially in regard to the representation of female desire.
This book explores how women’s relationship with food has been represented in Italian literature,... more This book explores how women’s relationship with food has been represented in Italian literature, cinema, scientific writings and other forms of cultural expression from the 19th century to the present. Italian women have often been portrayed cooking and serving meals to others, while denying themselves the pleasure of the table. The collection presents a comprehensive understanding of the symbolic meanings associated with food and of the way these intersect with Italian women’s socio-cultural history and the feminist movement. From case studies on Sophia Loren and Elena Ferrante, to analyses of cookbooks by Italian chefs, each chapter examines the unique contribution Italian culture has made to perceiving and portraying women in a specific relation to food, addressing issues of gender, identity and politics of the body.

Le definizioni di esilio e nomadismo elaborate da Rosi Braidotti quali metafore dell’identita pos... more Le definizioni di esilio e nomadismo elaborate da Rosi Braidotti quali metafore dell’identita postmoderna costituiscono il punto di partenza per la discussione di alcuni scrittori degli anni Novanta (Brizzi, Culicchia, Caliceti, Scarpa, Nove, Ballestra, Campo e Santacroce), la cui narrativa prende le distanze dal contesto sociale, culturale e linguistico in cui si e tradizionalmente sviluppata la narrativa italiana. I personaggi dei loro testi si sentono estranei alla propria realta geografica e culturale, in cui sono tuttavia costretti a ricercare le radici del proprio disagio, soprattutto quando vogliono trasformarsi da esiliati in patria in soggetti nomadi, capaci cioe di identificarsi in modo positivo nella loro perenne condizione di transizione e molteplicita.
