This study aimed to further characterize the contention-stress rat model by exploring a possible correlation between oxidative stress markers measured in brain tissues with behavioral components of the aforementioned model. Thus, it is hereby proposed a possible IBS animal model relevant to pharmacological and complementary medicine studies. Materials and Methods: Wild-type male Wistar rats (n = 5/group) were chronically exposed to 6-hour/day contention, consisting of isolating the animals in small, vital space-granting plastic devices, for seven consecutive days. Following contention exposure, temporal lobes were extracted and subjected to biochemical analyses to assess oxidative stress-status parameters. Results: Our results show increased brain oxidative stress in contention-stress rat model: decreased s...

It is generally asymptomatic, but it may become clinically evident depending on the size, location and the pathological changes. Heterotopic pancreas can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract, but most commonly is found in the antrum of the stomach. We report an unusual case of a 31-year-old male patient with gastric outlet obstruction and chronic pancreatitis caused by a submucosal tumor at the pre-pyloric area revealed at endoscopy. Distal gastrectomy was performed and a histological diagnosis of heterotopic pancreas was established. The patient had an uneventful postoperative course and remained symptom free in the follow-up of six months. The difficulty of making an accurate preoperative diagnosis is highlighted and a review of the literature on this pathology is hereby presented. Although heterotopic pancreas is rare, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pancreatitis and gastric outlet obstruction caused by a submucosal gastric tumor.

The Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders which disturbs the daily life of individuals and potentially affects emotional status and quality of life. Visual analogue scale for IBS (VAS-IBS) is a well-known symptom severity rating scale proposed as an instrument which could be clinically used to evaluate the perceived severity of IBS symptoms in patients over time. In this study, we aimed to translate, adapt and validate the VAS-IBS to Romanian language and culture. The translation, adaptation and validation of the Romanian version of VAS-IBS were possible without many limitations due to some similarities between Romanian and Western cultures. Thus, according to our results, the final form of Romanian VAS-IBS can be considered a reliable tool in measuring the perceived severity of gastrointestinal symptoms which can be classified by 64/Bulletin of Integrative Psychiatry New Series March 2020 Year XXVI No. 1 (84) ROME IV as IBS symptoms, as this could also have an increased relevance in the context of the associated psychiatric disorders of IBS.

It is associated with worsening liver function, ascites and the occurrence of gastroesophageal variceal bleeding. The aim of this work was to clarify the risk factors, clinical presentation and complications of portal vein thrombosis in Egyptian patients with liver cirrhosis and to study the outcome with and without treatment after 6 months follow up period. Methods: Hospitalized cirrhotic patients (N = 80) were segregated into the PVT and non-PVT groups. PVT was detected by Doppler ultrasonography; each group was divided in two sub groups (A and B) according to presence or absence of HCC respectively. The 2 groups were compared as regards risk factors, clinical presentation and complications. The outcome of treatment with anticoagulation in 6 patients was evaluated. Result: PVT developed as result of combination of both local and systemic risk factors. HCC, abdomin...

Antibiotic prophylaxis is effective but can lead to an increased incidence of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of CDI and the risk factors in cirrhotic patients with a previous episode of SBP receiving norfloxacin as secondary prophylaxis. Materials and Methods: We performed a prospective, cohort study including patients with liver cirrhosis and SBP, successfully treated over a 2-year period in a tertiary university hospital. All the patients received secondary prophylaxis for SBP with norfloxacin 400 mg/day. Results: There were 122 patients with liver cirrhosis and SBP included (mean age 57.5 ± 10.8 years, 65.5% males). Alcoholic cirrhosis was the major etiology accounting for 63.1% of cases. The mean MELD score was 19.7 ± 6.1. Twenty-three (18.8%) of all patients developed CDI during follow-up, corres...

Our aim was to identify the changes in skeletal muscle index (SMI) on computed tomography (CT) examination, as a quantitative marker of sarcopenia, in patients with HCV-related cirrhosis after direct acting antivirals (DAAs) treatment and to assess predictive factors for the evolution of SMI. Materials and Methods: This is a single center retrospective study in patients with HCV-related compensated cirrhosis who obtained sustained virological response (SVR) after DAAs. CT examinations were performed in 52 patients before and within 5–24 months after treatment. The total muscle area (TMA) of abdominal muscle at the level of third lumbar vertebra (L3) was measured at baseline and after SVR. The L3-SMI was calculated from TMA divided by body height squared (cm2/m2). We assessed changes in L3-SMI after SVR according to baseline body mass index (BMI) and laboratory data. Predi...

Liver fibrosis and its end-point cirrhosis are the main causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with CHC. Liver biopsy (LB) has traditionally been considered the "gold standard" for pre-treatment evaluation of liver fibrossis in patients with CHC. However, LB is an invasive procedure with several shortcomings (intra- and interobserver variability, sampling errors, expensive) and the risk of rare but potentially life-threatening complications (biliary peritonitis, hemo-peritoneum, and death in 1/10,000). The aforementioned shortcomings of LB have led to development of several non-invasive methods for the assessment of liver fibrosis in CHC. Among the non-invasive methods, Fibrotest and Fibroscan are the most widely used in our country and offer a viable alternative to LB for pre-treatment assessment of liver fibrosis in patients with CHC. This review aim...

It is a small-vessel vasculitis mediated by type III hypersensitivity, manifested as rash accompanied by gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, arthritis, and nephritis. The etiology of this disease (a leukocytoclastic vasculitis) is still uncertain, but immune complexes of IgA and unidentified antigens seem to have a central pathogenic role. Most often the diagnosis is established after the clinical examination; it is easy at first glance when the clinical presentation includes the classic tetrad of rash (nonthrombocytopenic palpable purpura), arthralgia/arthritis, abdominal pain, and renal manifestations but may be difficult when the gastrointestinal manifestations precede the skin purpuric rash. Gastrointestinal involvement is frequently seen and varies from mild symptoms to severe complications; sometimes the gastrointestinal symptoms (colicky abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding) are the first manifestations of the disease. Immunoglobulin A vasculitis is usually a self-limited disease with a benign course, and the treatment is often symptomatic; in severe cases corticosteroids are necessary.

Advances in the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis in recent years have opened the way towards reducing mortality in patients with chronic liver disease. This goal has not yet been reached, as the burden of chronic liver disease remains a future major health problem as the incidence of the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease continues to rise. The proportion of patients with liver cirrhosis and those with hepatocellular carcinoma due to nonalcoholic liver disease on the liver transplant waiting list has increased in the last years. The upward trend in the incidence and prevalence of the disease in recent decades raises concern over a possible global epidemic, especially as the disease is still underestimated and underdiagnosed. Chronic kidney disease presented an increase in incidence and prevalence during the last year...

Thus, digestive symptoms, such as constipation, diarrhea, abdominal bloating, and pain have been reported to correlate to the various maladaptive behaviors in ASD children, such as irritability, social withdrawal, stereotypy, hyperactivity, and even language regression. In this context, the present study provides an overview on the prevalence of the gastrointestinal (GI) disorders in ASD and the correlation between these and ASD symptoms and comorbidities and subsequently discusses the metabolic and microbiome factors underlying the effects of GI disorders in ASD. Materials and Methods: For our analysis of GI symptoms in children with ASD, we have searched peer-reviewed journals from 2005 to 2017 in PubMed databases that addressed the specificity of GI symptoms in ASD and included correlations of GI and ASD symptoms. The criteria...
