The zinc finger transcription factor EGR4 has previously been identified as having a critical rol... more The zinc finger transcription factor EGR4 has previously been identified as having a critical role in the proliferation of small cell lung cancer. Here, we have identified a novel, shortened splice variant of this transcription factor (EGR4-S) that is regulated by Heat Shock Factor-1 (HSF1). Our findings demonstrate that the shortened variant (EGR4-S) is upregulated with high EGFR, HER2, and H-Rasv12-expressing breast cell lines, and its expression is inhibited in response to HER pathway inhibitors. Protein and mRNA analyses of HER2+ human breast tumours indicated the novel EGR4-S splice variant to be preferentially expressed in tumour tissue and not detectable in patient-matched normal tissue. Knockdown of EGR4-S in the HER2-amplified breast cancer cell line SKBR3 reduced cell growth, suggesting that EGR4-S supports the growth of HER2+ tumour cells. The notion of measurements is central for many debates in quantum mechanics. One critical point i... more The notion of measurements is central for many debates in quantum mechanics. One critical point is whether a measurement can be regarded as an absolute event, giving the same result for any observer in an irreversible manner. Using ideas from the gedankenexperiment of Wigner’s friend it has been argued that, when combined with the assumptions of locality and no-superdeterminism, regarding a measurement as an absolute event is incompatible with the universal validity of quantum mechanics. We show that already partial information about a measurement carried out by Wigner’s friend leads to the same conclusion. Our approach uses strictly less assumptions than previous approaches; moreover, our protocol allows to ensure that the measurement process did take place, without merely trusting the honesty of the actors or the functionality of the devices.
We apply the Bethe-Peierls approximation to the problem of the inverse Ising model and show how t... more We apply the Bethe-Peierls approximation to the problem of the inverse Ising model and show how the linear response relation leads to a simple method to reconstruct couplings and fields of the Ising model. This reconstruction is exact on tree graphs, yet its computational expense is comparable to other mean-field methods. We compare the performance of this method to the independent-pair, naive meanfield, Thouless-Anderson-Palmer approximations, the Sessak-Monasson expansion, and susceptibility propagation in the Cayley tree, SK-model and random graph with fixed connectivity. At low temperatures, Bethe reconstruction outperforms all these methods, while at high temperatures it is comparable to the best method available so far (Sessak-Monasson). The relationship between Bethe reconstruction and other mean-field methods is discussed.

We summarize the evaluation of the first Automated Legal Question Answering Competition (ALQAC 20... more We summarize the evaluation of the first Automated Legal Question Answering Competition (ALQAC 2021). The competition this year contains three tasks, which aims at processing the statute law document, which are Legal Text Information Retrieval (Task 1), Legal Text Entailment Prediction (Task 2), and Legal Text Question Answering (Task 3). The final goal of these tasks is to build a system that can automatically determine whether a particular statement is lawful. There is no limit to the approaches of the participating teams. This year, there are 5 teams participating in Task 1, 6 teams participating in Task 2, and 5 teams participating in Task 3. There are in total 36 runs submitted to the organizer. In this paper, we summarize each team's approaches, official results, and some discussion about the competition. Only results of the teams who successfully submit their approach description paper are reported in this paper.

Internet of Things (IoT) has been increasingly developed to provide essential IoT services rangin... more Internet of Things (IoT) has been increasingly developed to provide essential IoT services ranging from personal health, smart homes to smart cities, and critical infrastructures. Sensor/IoT devices are indispensable elements in these systems/services. However, they are too rigid to permit reconfiguration for changes after their implementation. This makes it difficult to provision IoT services on demand and causes inefficient utilization of resources. Software-defined networking (SDN) and Network function virtualization (NFV) are emerging solutions to the programmability of network functions. Provisioning IoT services on demand is a natural utilization of programmability. Inspired by the benefits of SDN-NFV programmability, this paper proposes a softwaredefined virtual sensor (SDVS) that enables the programmability of IoT devices in accordance with IoT applications on demand. The paper presents the design and implementation of the proposed SDVS and demonstrates its use in an on-demand IoT services scenario.

Correlations between distant particles are central to many puzzles and paradoxes of quantum mecha... more Correlations between distant particles are central to many puzzles and paradoxes of quantum mechanics and, at the same time, underpin various applications such as quantum cryptography and metrology. Originally in 1935, Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (EPR) used these correlations to argue against the completeness of quantum mechanics. To formalize their argument, Schrödinger subsequently introduced the notion of quantum steering. Still, the question of which quantum states can be used for EPR steering and which cannot remained open. Here we show that quantum steering can be viewed as an inclusion problem in convex geometry. For the case of two spin-1/2 particles, this approach completely characterizes the set of states leading to EPR steering. In addition, we discuss the generalization to higher-dimensional systems as well as generalized measurements. We analyse the entanglement dynamics of the two particles interacting through gravity in the rece... more We analyse the entanglement dynamics of the two particles interacting through gravity in the recently proposed experiments aiming at testing quantum signatures for gravity [Phy. Rev. Lett 119, 240401 & 240402 (2017)]. We consider the open dynamics of the system under decoherence due to the environmental interaction. We show that as long as the coupling between the particles is strong, the system does indeed develop entanglement, confirming the qualitative analysis in the original proposals. We show that the entanglement is also robust against stochastic fluctuations in setting up the system. The optimal interaction duration for the experiment is computed. A condition under which one can prove the entanglement in a device-independent manner is also derived.

Measurements serve as the intermediate communication layer between the quantum world and our clas... more Measurements serve as the intermediate communication layer between the quantum world and our classical perception. So, the question which measurements efficiently extract information from quantum systems is of central interest. Using quantum steering as a nonclassical phenomenon, we show that there are instances, where the results of all two-outcome measurements can be explained in a classical manner, while the results of some three-outcome measurements cannot. This points at the important role of the number of outcomes in revealing the nonclassicality hidden in a quantum system. Moreover, our methods allow to improve the understanding of quantum correlations by delivering novel criteria for quantum steering and improved ways to construct local hidden variable models.

Background: the prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (... more Background: the prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension, is increasing rapidly in developing countries. This study aims to assess the awareness of CMD among a selected population in Vietnam. Method: a cross-sectional random sample of 402 Vietnamese citizens in two districts (Thu Duc and 12th district) in Ho Chi Minh City were interviewed. Data on knowledge, attitude, and preventive behavior (KAB) of the two conditions were collected through an interview-based questionnaire. Results: the mean (± SD) age was 47.75 (± 15.61) years, and around 60.2% were female. Multiple logistic regression was performed to explore the association of sociodemographic factors, disease status, and awareness of the CMD. Females showed better awareness than males (OR = 3.89 (1.28–11.78)), and those with T2DM and hypertension had a significantly better awareness (OR = 8.33 (2.44–28.37)) than those without CMD. It is critical for teacher educators and scholars of teacher education to think carefully about t... more It is critical for teacher educators and scholars of teacher education to think carefully about the conceptual framework that they use to evaluate teacher education programs. Without a strong conceptual framework, it may be difficult for teacher educators to evaluate whether or not they are operating within a strong program. Thus, we frame this article as an opportunity to present one particular pre-existing framework in the research literature that can be used to conceptualize teacher education quality. We then present some evidence that supports and challenges this framework. In other words, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the conceptual framework for teacher education quality proposed by Hsieh, Law, Shy, Wang, Hsieh, and Tang (2011). This study used a large-scale, international data set – the OECD Teaching and Learning Internatio... more This study used a large-scale, international data set – the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) 2013, consisting of 14,583 teachers from 34 countries (OECD, 2014) – to examine the manner in which feedback from administrators, time spent observing colleagues’ classes, job satisfaction, and work enjoyment predicted teachers’ instructional self-efficacy. It was found that feedback from administrators was not a significant predictor of teacher self-efficacy for instruction, whilst peer observation, job satisfaction, and work enjoyment were estimated as being significant predictors. The results of this study have implications for practice – specifically, how teachers and school leaders cultivate teachers’ self-efficacy for instruction – and future research.

Pacific island countries are highly vulnerable to various natural disasters which are destructive... more Pacific island countries are highly vulnerable to various natural disasters which are destructive, unpredictable and occur frequently. The frequency and scale of these shocks heightens the importance of medium-term economic and fiscal planning to minimize the adverse impact of disasters on economic development. This paper identifies the intensity of natural disasters for each country in the Pacific based on the distribution of damage and population affected by disasters, and estimates the impact of disasters on economic growth and international trade using a panel regression. The results show that "severe" disasters have a significant and negative impact on economic growth and lead to a deterioration of the fiscal and trade balance. We also find that the negative impact on growth is stronger for more intense disasters. Going further this paper proposes a simple and consistent method to adjust IMF staff's economic projections and debt sustainability analysis for disaster shocks for the Pacific islands. Better incorporating the economic impact of natural disasters in the mediumand long-term economic planning would help policy makers improve fiscal policy decisions and to be better adapted and prepared for natural disasters.

We address the problem of quantum nonlocality with positive operator valued measures (POVM) in th... more We address the problem of quantum nonlocality with positive operator valued measures (POVM) in the context of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen quantum steering. We show that, given a candidate for local hidden state (LHS) ensemble, the problem of determining the steerability of a bipartite quantum state of finite dimension with POVMs can be formulated as a nesting problem of two convex objects. One consequence of this is the strengthening of the theorem that justifies choosing the LHS ensemble based on symmetry of the bipartite state. As a more practical application, we study the classic problem of the steerability of two-qubit Werner states with POVMs. We show strong numerical evidence that these states are unsteerable with POVMs up to a mixing probability of 1 2 within an accuracy of 10 −3 .
