A critical review of Doh and Lee's paper is given, to correct the confused the concept of nomenclature and to provide proper scientific name for taxa which are discussed. Methods : This paper discusses the proper usage, as mandated by the International Code of Nomenclature. Adherence to the rules described in this paper should reduce the present confusion in the nomenclature of scientific names listed in the Korean Pharmacopoeia. Results : Although Doh and Lee proposed four categories to correct the scientific names of the Korean Pharmacopoeia using available botanical databases, they failed to show how nomenclatural concepts are applicable due to misconception of legitimacy and the confusion about synonym. From a nomenclatural perspective, 'accepted name' or 'recommended name' is a subjective term which used to be employed for convenience in a certain databases or working group without nomenclatural meaning. Doh and Lee also pointed out the standardization of author citation. However, they missed the importance of author citation error such as basionym or validating authors. Conclusions : Doh and Lee were not able to solve nomenclatural problems of the Korea Pharmacopoeia due to lack of clarity on the nomenclature code. We strongly recommend that KFDA has to commence extensive nomenclatural review for the next revision of Korea Pharmacopoeia.

Although A. distichurn maintained relatively high genetic diversity probably due to floral heteromorphism and preferred outcrossing, their genetic variation, where small effective size of population and genetic drift are of utmost importance ¶ was lower than the other outbreeding plants. The calculated GST indicated a hqh level of genetic differentiation among populations, suggesting that gene flow was limited. The dendrogram based on Nei's genetic distance showed that the Pu-an and the Koe-san populations fell into two distinct groups, which were consistent with geographic distance and distribution. It was probable that in the populations of A. distichurn sexually reproduced individuals rarely become established within the populations. From observations, Lassiog/ossurn bee was found to be the most effective pollinator of A. distichurn. Artificial crossing experiment indicated that pollinators contributed considerably to natural population and that pollinator limitation could potentially reduce fitness of A. distichurn in wild populations. The management of rare plant species should include improvement of genetic exchanges among populations by artificial gene flow. From each of the four subpopulations, fresh twigs from 20 trees should be collected and propagated as the cutting for ex situ conservation.

A total of 10 compounds were isolated and identified, mainly mono-and di-glycosides of flavones (apigenin and luteolin) and/or flavonols (myricetin, kaempferol and quercetin). By comparing the results of flavonoid chemistry with the morphological characteristics and geographic distribution patterns, subsection Carpinus might be differentiated into two ancestor-based groups, one consisting of Carpinus tientaiensis, Carpinus londoniana, and Carpinus betulus, the other Carpinus viminea var. viminea, C. viminea var. chiukiangensis, Carpinus laxiflora, and Carpinus caroliniana. A major trend in the reduction of the number of compounds from the primitive to the advanced was observed in subsect. Carpinus, and the chemical simplification seems to be related to species differentiation within the subsection. The presence of isoflavones in C. laxiflora and C. caroliniana revealed their advancement chemically, but C. betulus and C. londoniana showed no chemical differentiation. Overall intercontinental divergence of Carpinus was not confirmed by this study. A number of infraspecific taxa in the subsect. Carpinus were chemically identical with their original varieties except the C. viminea complex. This might be because sect. Carpinus is undergoing slower radiation; significant biochemical differentiation among infraspecific taxa seems not to have occurred yet. These flavonoid data reflected intrasectional parallelisms and intersectional radiation in Carpinus.

Levels of allozyme variation (A = 1.47,P = 40%,He = 0.088) were also compared with other endemic plant species. Genetic divergence between populations was very high (G st = 0.271 ), with moderate to high interpopulation differentiation, which probably arose through historical bottlenecks in a landscape of habitat fragmentation and/or human influence. The percentage of polymorphic loci, heterozygosity, and mean number of alleles per locus were positively related to population size, probably due to the stochastic loss of rare alleles in the smaller populations. Individuals in the small and marginal populations (TB, KD, and CJ) showed higher proportions of fixed loci. These ecologically marginal populations were typically more distant from the nearest neighboring population and were more genetically distinct from one another. The genetic structure of the current population ofM. saniculifolia is probably the result of local extinctions of intervening populations. This, in turn, is due to the Pleistocene climatic change and increased habitat destruction. A positive association appears to exist between genetic diversity and population size. Although these small population sizes are more sensitive to stochastic events, securing a certain number of individuals from the three larger populations (SB, JB, and TG) could be accomplished as part of a conservation strategy. In addition, it is important to prioritize populations in different regions in order to limit population declines caused by large-scale environmental catastrophes.
