In the suburban ring we found increasing voting turnout, a decreasing share of votes for the Polish party, and an increase of the absolute number of votes for this party. The changing electoral behavior might be an indicator of growing ethno-political tensions and the zones of the most intense changes identify areas of potential social tensions between ethnic groups.

While most studies focus on specific cities and regions, much less is known about the spatial dimension of population decline on the national level, and the local factors determining spatially uneven population change. This study uses Lithuanian Census data from the years 2001 and 2011 to get insight into the geography of population change for the whole country. Lithuania has experienced one of the highest rates of population decline in the world in the last decades. The predictive models show that regional factors have a strong effect on the variation in population change throughout the country, but also reveal that socio-demographic and economic area characteristics play a role in the process of decline. Our results give little hope to those who would like to reverse the ongoing trends of population change and emphasize the need for spatial planning to cope with the changes. This is an approach which currently does not exist in practice in Lithuania.

Major part of Lithuania is sparsely populated, thus the purpose of complex analysis is to evaluate, how the decreasing of the density of residents influences economy, what are the features of economic activity, farming, recreation and tourism, what difficulties arise lining in this territory. In 2012-2013, in the Lithuanian Social Research Centre, scientific research project "Lietuvos retai apgyventos teritorijos ir jų gyventojai" ("Sparsely populated areas of Lithuania and its residents") was carried out. In the monography, part of the material, which was collected and summarized during this research, is presented. The main period of analysis includes a decade of population census between 2001 and 20011. The problem of sparsely populated areas is analysed starting with the review of wide European context and continuing with the level of the territory, municipality and eldership of Lithuania. The main method of the research – complex sociogeographical analysis, where qualitative and quantitative methods are applied integrated. Monography consists of six parts. In the first parts, it is discussed, what is considered sparsely populated territory; the tendencies of depopulation are reviewed. The demographic state of the residents of Lithuania and its tendencies of changing are analysed in detail. The fifth part is for the changing of the system of settlements. The broadest – the sixth part, where the social economic features are analysed. The book is not only for geographers, but also for the scientists, students of other scientific fields and for all, who are interested in geographic, demographic, social and economic development of Lithuania

Socio-Spatial Transformations, Suburbanisation, and Voting Behaviour in the Vilnius Urban Region ... more Socio-Spatial Transformations, Suburbanisation, and Voting Behaviour in the Vilnius Urban Region This paper analyses the interrelationship between the process of suburbanization and a changing political and ethnic landscape in the Vilnius urban region. The region surrounding Vilnius city is dominated by Polish identity residents while those who suburbanise into the region are mainly ethnic Lithuanians. This may lead to potential tension and conflicts in the region which may find its expression in the voting behaviour of residents of the region. Using data from the 1997 and 2011 municipal elections we found that the share of votes for the Polish party in the region decreases over time, while the absolute number of votes for this party increases. At the same time we find increasing voting activity in the suburban ring. The changing electoral behaviour can be regarded as an indicator of a growing ethnic identity. The voting results also identify the zones of the most intense changes in the electoral behavior and thus indicate areas of potential social tensions between two ethnic groups.

The article discusses the historical aspects of the accommodation business in Lithuania, the territorial distribution of accommodation in rural areas of Lithuania, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the accommodation sector in rural areas. Spatial analysis, together with qualitative and quantitative methods, was used in this research. The primary data for the article were received from the questionnaires filled out by fifty representatives of the Tourism Information Centres from different Lithuanian regions. Also, the analysis is supplemented by the secondary official statistical data. The research results revealed the direct impact of COVID-19 on the accommodation sector in rural regions of Lithuania. The proposed RegTour model contributes to reducing the impact of COVID-19 on the country's economy and promoting the development of new forms of knowledge-based business and the transformation of the sector. Moreover, the research revealed the unexploited opportunities of rural tourism and the possible directions of change.

The article delves into the problem of spatial differentiation of young voter turnout, paying special attention to the most segregated metropolitan regions. The relationship between youth turnout and changes in the support of individual parties in different polling units is also sought. The results show that the voting activity of young citizens depends on their political preferences towards right-wing parties. Political preferences and turnout are polarised in central and peripheral regions and new political players such as the Freedom Party can influence young residents' political behaviour.

Projektą finansavo Lietuvos mokslo taryba (Nr. SIN-02/2012)It is usually considered that Lithuania is quite well mastered and relatively densely inhabited country. However, there are more and more territories or even entire regions in Lithuania with very low and rapidly decreasing population density. The accelerating depopulation and the spread of sparsely populated areas (further hereafter - the SPA) are becoming a new and a serious challenge for the Lithuanian society and the state. The problem is highly relevant, because a SPA is sort of an indicator that shows what the country may expect in the future. Uneven socio-economic development, high emigration, and other socio-demographic degradation phenomena threaten the Lithuanian state. The aim of the study is to reveal demographic and social characteristics related with the spread of sparsely populated areas in Lithuania and their population, as well as the development trends thereof. Attempts were made to highlight not only where and how many SPAs there are in Lithuania, but also their differences from other Lithuanian territories. But it should be noted that this book does not attempt to summarize all the topics close to this issue, or research papers conducted and published earlier by scientists of other countries or Lithuania (specific research about SPAs in Lithuania were simply not available), and we focused on the analysis of the recent statistical data received and collected by ourselvesLietuvos socialinių tyrimų centrasVilniaus universitetasVytauto Didžiojo universitetasŠvietimo akademij

The imposed restrictive measures have greatly impacted and led to the stagnation of tourism sector. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, the number of international tourist arrivals sharply decreased. In 2021 the majority of restrictions have been eased due to the decreasing morbidity, but it did not reinstate the tourism into the previous level. According to statistics, the decline in tourist flows in Lithuania in 2021 still continued, albeit the decrease was smaller. The increase in the number of local tourists (especially in 2021) has somewhat compensated the loss of international tourism, but has not changed it. The tourism business is still going through a difficult period. This article emphasizes the issues of local and inbound tourism business in Lithuania in the context of Covid-19 pandemic. One of the most evident spatial results—redistribution of population as new economic and social structures evolve. The paper seeks to identify specific features of functional change and its influence on the social and demographic processes in rural areas of Lithuania. The general transformation of rural areas is deeply influenced by the processes of peripherisation and decreasing economic importance of rural places, however actual situation differs a lot in different places. Many rural areas close to metropolitan centres were transformed into suburban ones. The rural settlements in recreational areas have been transformed into resort areas, which statistically often have no inhabitants. The biggest challenges face small peripheral rural settlements, which are losing population and social infrastructure at very high pace, while social exclusion of part of their residents is increasing. The empirical research is mostly based on statistical data analysis but other sources of information had also been employed.

Comparing current scholarship and data on demographic and economic processes of centralisation and peripheralisation, we also examine political debates around issues of polarisation in different scholarly national perspectives. Despite variations in national discourses, our comparative perspective conveys strong similarities between the three Baltic countries in terms of socio-economic and demographic concentration in the capital regions to the disadvantage of the rest of the country. The analysis of regional policies further points to tensions between a concern for territorial cohesion on the one hand, and an adherence to the neo-liberal logic of growth and competitiveness against the backdrop of post-socialist transition on the other hand...

The regions of Lithuania's major cities were selected due to the great socio-demographic and cultural variety of their residents and due to the fact that this variety is distributed unevenly in space. Political parties that belong to the centreright block were chosen for the electoral structure analysis. The main goal of the research is to evaluate the interrelations between changing socio-demographic and political structures in sprawling urban regions. A correlation analysis of electoral and statistical data was carried out to substantiate the territorial patterns of electoral behaviour outlined in this work. The socio-demographic and cultural structure of the city territory was evaluated to base the formation of Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda urban regions 'electoral' structure as they are related by causality. It was found that the causality and patterns in the territorial distribution of election results can be found by analysing the social differences of voters living in different parts of the region. Two cities with different share of housing estates and public support system, Vilnius and Budapest are in the focus of the analysis. The renovation of housing estates is a new process in both of them; it started only in the 2000s and its outcome is far from spectacular. The most important and most common type of renovation activities is the insulation of blocks of flats because it significantly decreases the utility costs. The article investigates whether and how the social and physical characteristics of housing estates influence their renovation. The size, age, type, spatial location all have some impact on the renovation level. Consequently, the social status of the inhabitants and the availability...
