In this paper, an approach that makes use of semantic web technologies to support evaluation processes in e-learning courses is described. In this work, ontologies are used to model the knowledge of the courses and to annotate the knowledge contained in the examination tests. Moreover, semantic web and E-learning standards are included in this evaluation approach, which emphasizes on open questionsbased evaluation tests.

A basic issue for achieving that goal is the appropriate management of the process quality. In this sense, we are interested in researching how Semantic Web technologies may improve the quality of the educative process. In this work, we present an intelligent system that has been developed for this purpose in cooperation with a local high school that is currently implementing the ISO 9001 norm© 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The continuous evaluation is a key issue in E-learning. In this work, a methodology that makes use of artificial intelligence techniques to support automatic continuous evaluation processes is proposed. This methodology evaluates apportions of each student and the solutions to their assigned tasks on a continuous basis

An ontological model is the kernel used for specifyingontologies so that how close an ontology can be from the real worlddepends on the possibilities offered by the ontological model. Inthis paper, an ontological model that permits the specification ofconcepts, attributes, mereological and taxonomic relationships, andstructural axioms, and that has already been applied to differentapplication domains is extended to contain topologicalrelationships as well. It is demonstrated in this paper thattopological relations can be established on ontologies built withthat ontological model, and the topological relations are notestablished by the user but inferred from the knowledge containedin the particular ontology. The domain chosen for this work is therelation between drugs consumption and cancer diagnoses.

One important issue is to provide mechanisms for the design of contents adapted to the needs and preferences of individuals, that is, providing personalized courses. In this paper we present a recommendation module based on semantic web technologies that combines the semantic modelling of both learning objects and learning objectives. We also describe how the recommendation module has been included in two eLearning systems developed by our research group, for the recommending reinforcement contents and supporting the design of on-demand courses.

Feedback allows students to know their learning flaws and helps teachers to design learning contents adapted to the needs of the students. Semantic Web technologies have been applied in recent years with different purposes in Education, but their applications for generating useful feedback have not been researched enough so far. In this paper we present an approach for generating feedback to open questions in assessment tests, by making use of ontologies and semantic annotations. The feedback is generated by obtaining the semantic similarity between the annotations associated with both questions and students’ answers. The method has been implemented as an extension of our online assessment platform. Its application in a real course is also presented and discussed here.

Generally, only experts in the field meet these requirements. In this paper, we present OWLPath, a natural language-query editor guided by multilanguage OWL-formatted ontologies. This application allows nonexpert users to easily create SPARQL queries that can be issued over most existing ontology storage systems. Our approach is a fully fledged solution backed with a proof-of-concept implementation and the empirical results of two challenging use cases: one in the domain of e-finance and the other in e-tourism.
