The assessment has been carried out in two educationally underprivileged pastoralist districts of south Omo. Ethnographic visits, key informants interview and focus group discussion were the major tools of data collection. Findings suggest that the area is characterized by regular seasonal mobility, frequent conflicts and conflict induced displacement. For communities in Dasenech and Nyangatom the situation of no war does not necessarily mean that there is peace. Drought and harsh weather are the driving forces of mobility. Competition over water sources and pastureland coupled with internal border dispute and cattle raid were identified as the long standing causes of armed conflict. Inability of schools to continue their regular functions without disruptions in the area under study is recognized as an adverse effect of both mobility and conflict. Encroachme...

I E R Flambeau, 2002

Thisinnovation evolved from the interest to tackle the then critical problem of teacher shortage in the United States. The earlier form of the scheme was introduced in an arrangement whereby a single teacher was responsible for the total instruction of a given class of students. This same scheme was adopted to the Ethiopian primary schools during the last decade of the Imperial rule. In 1974, when the socialist government took power, the practice ceased to exist. Again in 1994, after 20 years of postponement, the self-contained set-up has been taken as a component part of the New Education and Training Policy. However, regions like SNNPR and Tigray have not yet endorsed this component part of the NETP. The scheme seems to be laid off in Addis Ababa even though it is stnctly adhered to in Amhara Regional State. Thus this study investigates the concepts and controversies attached to the self-contained classroom utilization with a focus on the American as well as the Ethiopian experiences.

The objective of the study is to identify sources of nicknaming and their implications to the teaching-learning scenario. Participants of the study were selected from among the second year pre-school teacher trainees of the Kotebe College of Teacher Education (extension program). Eight (5 female and 3 male) students within the age range of 18-25 years were included in the study on a voluntary basis. After identification of the participants was made, the students took part in a focus group discussion. Results obtained from the focus group discussion indicated that nicknaming instructors is mainly directed towards either how well or poorly an instructor handles his/her teaching responsibilities in general and encouraging participatory learning in particular.

The right to learn is one of the fundamental considerations of both the Universal Declaration of ... more The right to learn is one of the fundamental considerations of both the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights (UDHR) of the Child. Education is emphasized for the very reason that it plays a pivotal role in achievement of social and economic advancement. Nations around the globe have been working towards attainment of universal access to basic education since 1940s especially following the adoption of UDHR by the UN member states. Some countries have reached at the desired end and some others are lagging far behind from achieving universal enrolment to their eligible group of children. Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) are in the fore front of being disadvantaged in terms of access to basic social services like education. This study has examined into the situation of children in difficult circumstances in Ethiopia with respect to access to basic education. The review results indicate that there are 6 million children who have lost either of their ...

The study, thus, adopted both qualitative and quantitative methods of inquiry in order to effectively address the problem of primary school dropping out in the region. Purposive sampling was used in selection of sample districts and involving respondents in securing qualitative data. Simple random sampling was employed in identification of respondents for the quantitative data collection. Analysis of qualitative data was carried out via thematic classification, categorical analysis, and contextualization. Simple descriptive statistics were employed for quantitative data analysis. Consequently, the study unveiled the prevalence of high rate of primary school dropout in the region. The main attributes of the dropout can ...
