This paper describes the first two years of planning and launching a full scholarship principal p... more This paper describes the first two years of planning and launching a full scholarship principal preparation program aimed at developing leaders to work in poor rural schools throughout Arkansas. The founding principles that guided the program are explored as well as how those principles were challenged and retained from the initial proposal through funding and implementation. Ultimately the program launched with $1,954,129 in funding over a four year period and was able to remain innovative while still leading to traditional licensure, remaining consistent with NCATE standards, working within the bureaucratic requirements of a university course delivery model, and meeting the needs of participants and stakeholder in poor rural communities.

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between school principals’ sens... more Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between school principals’ sense of efficacy and their involvement with the Arkansas Leadership Academy's (the Academy) School Support Program (SSP).Design/methodology/approach– Data were collected from participating SSP principals to explore differences in mean principal self-efficacy given varied years of participation in SSP. The Principal Self-Efficacy Survey was used to measure the construct of principal self-efficacy of 27 principals participating in the Academy's SSP for low-performing schools.Findings– The findings suggest that principals of low-performing schools that participated in the Arkansas Leadership Academy's SSP for more years have a stronger sense of leadership efficacy than principals of low-performing schools that are just beginning the SSP.Post hocqualitative data were collected through a focus group discussion to provide insight regarding actual practices that led to increased percei...
A qualitative dissertation study was conducted to examine the impact of the Arkansas Leadership A... more A qualitative dissertation study was conducted to examine the impact of the Arkansas Leadership Academy\u27s Master Principal Program through the perspective of those who have completed the entire program and attained designation as a Master Principal. A logic model for the Master Principal Program offered a context for the study. A review of relevant literature provided the identification of gaps in the research which included limited findings for a program comparable to the Master Principal Program. Research methods for this phenomenological study were explained. The research sample included Master Principals, as of 2011. Interviews and a focus group using collaborative tools for reflection were the primary data collection methods. Five major findings emerged from this study as areas of impact of the MPP grounded both by the individuals\u27 strong convictions and practice, and from the collection of information from all participants: 1.
