Support in the form of substantial amounts of private and public investment is greatly needed in this area. Due to the lack of novel drugs for these diseases, nanobiotechnology has appeared as an important new breakthrough for the treatment of neglected diseases. Recently, very few reviews focusing on filiarasis, leishmaniasis, leprosy, malaria, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, trypanosomiasis, and tuberculosis, and dengue virus have been published. New developments in nanocarriers have made promising advances in the treatment of several kinds of diseases with less toxicity, high efficacy and improved bioavailability of drugs with extended release and fewer applications. This review deals with the current status of nanobiotechnology in the treatment of neglected diseases and highl...

This microorganism is resistant intrinsically to various drugs. The P. aeruginosa is associated with the biofilm formation, which causes worsen the prognosis and difficulty the treatment. The influence of Melaleuca alternifolia oil or "tree of tee" oil (TTO) and TTO nanoparticles on adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in buccal epithelial cells was investigated. Also was determined the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity against this microorganism. The TTO nanoparticles were produced by deposition of preformed polymer and the physic-chemical properties of nanoparticles were measured by electrophoresis and dynamic light scattering. The characterization of nanoparticle showed acceptable values for diameter and zeta potential. The evaluation of antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity against P. aeruginosa PAO1 was performed by microdilution indicating the minimal inhibitory concentration, and the potential antibiofilm. It was verified the action on virulence factors such the motility, besides the influence on adhesion in buccal epithelial cells. Both oil and nanoparticles showed a decrease in adhesion of microorganisms to buccal cells, decrease of biofilm and interfering on P. aeruginosa PAO1 motility. The nanostructuration of TTO, shows be a viable alternative against formed biofilm microorganisms.

Additionally, the protein corona is emerging as a key entity at the nanobiointerface; thus, a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between proteins and silver nanoparticles is imperative. Therefore, literature reporting studies involving both single molecule protein coronas (i.e., bovine and human serum albumin, tubulin, ubiquitin and hyaluronic-binding protein) and complex protein coronas (i.e., fetal bovine serum and yeast extract proteins) were selected to demonstrate the effects of protein coronas on silver nanoparticle cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity. There is evidence that distinct and differential protein components may yield a "protein corona signature" that is related to the size and/or surface curvature of the silver nanoparticles. Therefore, the formation of silver nanoparticle protein coronas together with the biological response to these coronas (i.e., oxidative stress, inflammation and cytotoxicity) as well as other cellular biophysicochemical mechanisms (i.e., endocytosis, biotransformation and biodistribution) will be important for nanomedicine and nanotoxicology. Researchers may benefit from the information contained herein to improve biotechnological applications of silver nanoparticles and to address related safety concerns. In summary, the main aim of this mini-review is to highlight the relationship between the formation of silver nanoparticle protein coronas and toxicity.

In contrast with other previous proposals, these techniques have been designed and evaluated in the context of a user centred process. The results of this evaluation and some relevant findings for the field of human computer interaction are also described.

The model proposed copies some properties of the real world communication but also allows the easy integration of Task Analysis to the design of CVEs, helping the developer in the design of the application. Furthermore, some of the benefits that the usage of this model brings to the user are also shown. Finally, some implementation details of a prototype supporting the described model are given. This prototype is used all along the paper to illustrate the explanation of some parts of the model.

This work focuses on the kinetic evaluation of physicochemical changes during the fungal fermentation of two tannin-rich plant materials, mainly on the polyphenolic content. Aspergillus niger GH1 was used in the fermentation processes, the cultures were monitored for 96 h. The content of proteins, crude fibres, lipids, reducing and total sugars was evaluated following the AOAC methods. Tannins were analyzed using a spectrophometric method. Biodegradation of ellagitannins was monitored kinetically and the accumulation of gallic and ellagic acids was determined by HPLC. Results demonstrated that pomegranate peel and creosote bush leaves are excellent supports for solid-state fermentation and sources of antioxidants.

The purpose of the methodology is to provide performance information about some selected computational kernels when they are executed in a grid. The models are based on analytical expressions obtained from exhaustive monitorized measurements. Even though the kernels that are considered in this work include both applications dependent and general purpose, the methodology can be applied to any kind of kernel in which the most relevant part in terms of execution time is due to computations and/or communications. We focused on MPI-based communications. In addition, an interactive Graphical User Interface was developed to summarize and show the information provided by the models from different views.

This framework is used as a modelization of argumentation dynamics. The notion of acceptability of arguments is analyzed as the framework evolves through time, and an algorithm for computing intervals of argument defense is introduced.

This process possibly leads to blocking situations, where conflicting arguments are found to be incomparable or equivalent in strength. In this work we introduce new argumentation semantics for extended frameworks, by taking into account the strength of an argument defense. Each of these new admissibility notions relies on the presence of blocking defeaters as argument defenders.
