A mielinização no sistema nervoso periférico estava normal. Os sinais clínicos, a idade de ocorrência e as lesões histológicas são compatíveis com a hipomielinogênese congênita descrita em cães.

The clinical signs were progressive and were characterized by ataxia, hypermetria, a wide stance and fine head tremors. When the affected cattle were forced to run, the signs were exacerbated, leading to epileptiform attacks. Histological lesions consisted of a very selective cerebellar cortical degeneration, almost exclusively affecting the Purkinje cells. The disease affected 6 out of 200 Holstein calves from the same bull. However, results of mating tests of the bull with his daughters and granddaughters suggested that it was not hereditary (p = 0.0062) although an environmental-genetic interaction could not be ruled out.

A review of the number of dogs submitted for necropsy at the Department of Veterinary Pathology o... more A review of the number of dogs submitted for necropsy at the Department of Veterinary Pathology of the Federal University of Santa Maria, RS, between 1985-1997 has shown that 11.7% (250/2136) had lesions and inclusion bodies characteristic of infection by canine distemper virus (CDV). Most of these cases occurred during the winter months in dogs that were less than 1.5 year old, which were submitted by residents from the city of Santa Maria. Canine distemper is considered endemic in this city. Significant differences in susceptibility were not observed between males and females. Mongrel dogs were super-represented, but dolichocephalic breeds were more affected than brachycephalic ones. Distemper encephalopathy with typical CDV inclusion bodies, especially in astrocytes, was the main lesion and occurred in 82% of these cases. Eosinophilic inclusion bodies characteristic of canine distemper were also observed in epithelial cells of the urinary bladder (15%), lung (6%), stomach (3%), kidney (1%), and tonsil (0.5%).

SUMMARY The viability of a homologous diaphragmatic muscle preserved in 98% glycerin for cervical tracheal repair in dogs was studied. Eighteen adult mongrel dogs, eight males, weighting 6 to 21kg were used. Five tracheal rings (2.0 x 4.5cm) were partially resected and a homologous muscle fragment was implanted. The animals were distributed in three numerally equal groups. They were observed for a post-operative period of 15 days (group I), 30 days (group II) and 60 days (group III). After these periods, the dogs were reoperated for macroscopic evaluation and collection of samples for histological evaluations. Tracheal repair with progressive substitution of the muscle flap by fibrous connective tissue, epithelial migration through the tracheal lumen and presence of cilia were detected. The homologous diaphragmatic muscle fragment preserved in 98% glycerin acts as a scaffold for the growth of fibrous connective tissue and allows epithelialization across the implant, without exuberant proliferation. Thus it can be used for the repair of tracheal defects in dogs.

The digestive tract was removed from fish collected from nature and fixed for some morphometric analyses, such as: intestinal quotient, intestinal area quotient, vilosity height, digestive somatic index, and hepatosomatic index. Grass carp showed the highest values of intestinal quotient and height vilosity. On the other hand, the intestinal area quotient was higher in traira than in the other species. The intestinal quotient can be used to estimate the feeding habit, and the intestinal area quotient, vilosity height and the relationships between digestive tract length and fish weight or digestive tract weight can provide important additional information to analyze the feeding habits.

The following groups were studied: Icontrol (saline), II -(saline and IFN-β), III -(EB) and IV -(EB and IFN-β). After 7, 15 and 30 days, the animals (n = 7) were sacrificed and the platelets were separated by the method of Lunkes et al. [Lunkes, G., Lunkes D., Morsch, V., Mazzanti, C., Morsch, A., Miron, V., Schetinger, M.R.C., 2004. NTPDase and 5′nucleotidase in rats alloxan-induced diabetes. Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice 65, 1-6]. NTPDase activity for ATP and ADP substrates was significantly lower in groups II and III after seven days, when compared to control (p b 0.001). At fifteen days, ATP hydrolysis was significantly lower in group III and IVand higher in group II (p b 0.001), while there was an activation of ADP hydrolysis in group II (p b 0.001), when compared with the control. 5′-nucleotidase activity was significantly higher in group IV (p b 0.001) after seven days, and lower in the groups III and IV (p b 0.001) after fifteen days in relation to the control. No significant differences were observed in NTPDase and 5′-nucleotidase activities after thirty days. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that the hydrolysis of adenine nucleotides is modified in platelets of rats demyelinated and treated with IFN-β.

In this work, we investigated the effect of the cyclosporine A on the acetylcholinesterase activity in the cerebral cortex, striatum, hippocampus, hypothalamus, cerebellum and pons of the rats experimentally demyelinated by ethidium bromide. Rats were divided into four groups: I control (injected with saline), II (treated with cyclosporine A), III (injected with 0.1% ethidium bromide) and IV (injected with 0.1% the ethidium bromide and treated with cyclosporine A). The results showed a significant inhibition ( p < 0.05) of acetylcholinesterase activity in the groups II, III and IV in all brain structures analyzed. In the striatum, hippocampus, hypothalamus and pons the inhibition was greater ( p < 0.005) when ethidium bromide was associated with cyclosporine A. In conclusion, the present investigation demonstrated that cyclosporine A is an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase activity and this effect is increased after an event of toxic demyelination of the central nervous system.

Brainstem fragments were collected from 24 hours to 31 days post-injection for ultrastructural study and GFAP immuno-histochemical staining. Some animals received colloidal carbon ink by intravenous route at the same periods. In rats from group C, there was no sign of astrocyte loss and no leakage of ink from blood vessels in the injection site. In group E, astrocyte disappearance began at 48 hours and some areas were still devoid of astrocytic processes 31 days after. Leakage of carbon particles was seen from 48 hours to 7 days in the EB-induced lesions. Tight junctions did not show any detectable ultrastructural change due to the lack of perivascular astrocytes.
