Nevertheless, its morphological variability and its native status throughout its range need to be further investigated. In this study, we aim to clarify some aspects of this infraspecific variability by molecular means. Sequences of one nuclear and five plastid markers were analyzed under maximum parsimony by using TCS software. Plastid data were also time-calibrated under a Bayesian Inference framework. Plastid data revealed strong isolation between the populations from the Cyrno-Sardinian biogeographical province, which are also the most diverse and presumably the most archaic, and those from Sicily and Southern Italy (in this latter area, the species is naturalized). The calibration analysis indicates that the last common ancestor between G. etnensis and its sister group G. fasselata dates back to the middle Pliocene or slightly later, when sclerophyllous Mediterra...

However, to date, a comprehensive study on the phylogenetic relationships within this genus is lacking. In this paper, we provide a multigene phylogeny of all the species and subspecies of Mcneillia employing two nuclear and six chloroplast markers. We documented extensive gene flow between taxa, sometimes separated at specific rank. In addition, Mcneillia as currently circumscribed, is not monophyletic. In fact, Mcneillia graminifolia subsp. brachypetala, strictly endemic to Greece, truly belongs to Minuartiella, a genus otherwise limited to South-West Asia. Moreover, even after removal of this taxon, our results do not support the monophyly of the taxa included in M. graminifolia s.l., the most variable and widespread species of the genus. Further controversial subspecies of Mcneillia graminifolia, i.e., subsp. hungarica and subsp. rosanoi, are shown to dese...

Morphological and nomenclatural investigations for two critical Mediterranean species of Elatine,... more Morphological and nomenclatural investigations for two critical Mediterranean species of Elatine, i.e., E. macropoda and E. gussonei, as well as their correct distribution in Sicily, are discussed. These two names are lectotypified on herbarium specimens kept, respectively, at NAP and FI. The morphological investigations carried out on both the types, as well as on several living and dried material collected in southern Sicily, Lampedusa, and Malta (loci classici included), allowed to individuate reliable diagnostic characters that can be used for a correct identification of the two species. The most relevant differential features are: ratio petal/sepal, size and shape of the seed testa pits, and their arrangement in row number. According to our results, only E. macropoda occurs in the Hyblaean territory (Sicily), which is the locus classicus, whereas E. gussonei occurs on Lampedusa and Maltese islands only. However, further and in-depth morphological research is necessary to clarif...

In this paper, a critical review of literature and herbarium data allows us to reduce L. divaricatum to a synonym of L. dubium; the lectotypification of this latter name is also amended.

Ephedra nebrodensis Tineo ex Gussone (1844: 638) is a Macaronesian-Mediterranean nanophanerophyte, growing in dry and rocky places (Pignatti et al. 2017). However, if on one hand the application of this name is unequivocal, on the other hand, when E. major Host (1831: 671) and E. nebrodensis are regarded as synonyms (e.g., Freitag & Maier-Stolte 1993, Bartolucci et al. 2018, WCSP 2020 onwards), the name by Host claims priority. Nevertheless, E. major is a nomen ambiguum (Greuter et al. 1984), considered by some authors as a synonym of E. foeminea Forsskål (1775: 219) (Nouviant 1999), so that Brullo & Del Guacchio (2021) made a formal proposal to reject the name according to Art. 57.1 of the ICN (Turland et al. 2018). Such a proposal, if accepted, automatically will establish E. nebrodensis as the priority name (see WCSP 2020 onwards for a list of heterotypic synon...

Its naturalization status and ecology are discussed, also providing a morphological comparison with the related taxa (both occurring in Italy) A. ligustrina and Eupatorium cannabinum. Some remarks on potential threats for habitat and native flora are provided as well.

(see e.g., Bernardo et al. 2019, Iberite et al. 2017, Iamonico et al. 2021), we here present a note about the names Onobrychis tenoreana Lacaita (1911: 276), O. laconica Orph. ex Boissier (1872–1873: 530) [= O. alba (Waldstein & Kitaibel 1803–1805: 111) Desvaux (1814: 83) subsp. pentelica (Haussknecht 1887: 71) Nyman (1889: 99)], and O. pentelica. The research is based on both analysis of the relevant literature and examination of specimens at BM, FI, JE, MPU, and P (Thiers 2021 onwards).

Presl about the flora of Sicily (southern Italy), i.e., (the possible proofs of) the first issue of the Prodromus to his Flora Sicula, after 200 years from its preparation. This document, for reasons unknown, was not widely distributed to scientific institutions and, therefore, cannot be considered as published; in addition, it has been neglected until now, so that it is missing from Presl's bibliography. In spite of this, various botanists of the 19th century refer to this work for protologues. The booklet is bound together with the wellknown first volume of Presl's Flora Sicula, and lacks a title page; consequently, direct information about title, date and possible place of publication are not available. Nevertheless, analyzing other contributions by the same scholar and also biographic and bibliographic information, the authors reconstruct the chronology of the booklet and formulate hypotheses on its origin and about the possible reasons for the choice of not publishing it. The Prodromus is also compared to other Presl publications on the Sicilian flora, often poorly known or forgotten, and especially to his dissertation. Three appendices report a list of the taxa present in these early works by Presl, and various nomenclatural notes.
