Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 146 cassava farmers. Data collected through structured questionnaire were analysed using frequency counts, percentages and logit regression analysis. Findings revealed that the Ministry of Agriculture, friends and neighours, radio and television were major sources of information to respondents. Majority had access to information on available market for produce (45.2%), produce price (48.8%), input price (37.0%), improved cassava varieties (50.7%), fertilizer type (43.2%) and fertilizer application (46.6%). Inferential statistics revealed that education (t=2.522), association membership (t=2.275) and extension contact (t=2.080) had a significant influence on respondents access to agricultural information. It is recommended that ADP should be adequately funded to bridge the gap between researchers and farmers while adult education and membership of association should be encouraged among peasant farmers in Delta State.

A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 146 cassava farmers across the state. Data collected through structured questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman's rho correlation. Findings revealed that respondents' had access to information on available market for produce, produce price, input price, improved cassava varieties, fertilizer type and fertilizer application. It was also observed that respondents utilize this information in their farm enterprise. The study identified poor communication, wrong communication channels and inadequate fund and epileptic power supply as major constraints associated with accessing agricultural information. A test of significance between information access and utilization showed that information on pest control method, disease control method, processing equipment and packaging were

Data on membership of agricultural cooperatives, farm income and poverty status were obtained from a total of randomly selected 244 respondent,s comprising 122 farmers' cooperators and 122 non-cooperators, utilizing interview schedule and analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and means. Farm budgeting, Foster, Greer and Thorbecke model of poverty and t-test were also evaluated. Multipurpose cooperatives attracted the highest number of members than credit and thrift and fishery cooperatives. Farmers' cooperators and non-cooperators were generally low income earners. The mean annual net income, incidence, depth and severity of poverty of farmers' cooperators and non-cooperators together provide sufficient evidence that membership in agricultural cooperatives could serve as a way for improving farmers' income and well-being. It is therefore recommended that the activities of cooperatives be improved upon and repositioned as an agent of change in the study area.

Data for the study were obtained from thirty-five purposively sample projects farmers involved in rice production. Analysis of data indicated that majority (97.4%) of the respondents were between 5 and 8 members in their households. Also, the results indicated that there were difference in income above N10, 000 and crop yield (91,216.1Kg) before and after irrigation practices were adopted by the project farmers. It was suggested that the project farmers should be assisted with land preparation in order to reduce labour requirements on the farm.

Rural agriculture is particularly, characterized by cycles of low agricultural productivity, low incomes, poor access to quality agricultural inputs and advice, limited access to equitable markets and poverty. Consequently, productivity of land varies widely, and there is much scope for improvement. The Department of agricultural economics and extension services is actively involved in action research that contributes to innovation for food security, and provide services for rural communities. Outreach programme educate farmers regarding the use of sustainable agriculture practices and alternative marketing strategies. The extension services unit of the department of Agricultural Economics and Extension Services in the bid to contribute to the development in the agricultural and rural sector of the economy embarked on community outreach programme under the students Field Practical Training (FPT) in the 2012/2013 session. The outreach programme is aimed at establishing the presence of the university as an extension outfit to the host communities through quality interventions, awareness creation for attitudinal change, capacity building and packaging innovations to address identified needs and problems in order to improve the quality of life of the rural people. However, there is need to coordinate, scale and make sustainable these services as well as to better reach farmers, especially women. Outreach programme to University of Benin Host Communities is a participatory extension project intended to develop a rapid, relatively low-cost methodology for assessing the needs of farmers, in the rural host communities of the University of Benin, Benin-City. The focus of the outreach programme is to induce farmers' responsiveness to improved farm practices

The Agricultural technology system (ATS), which, in Nigeria, is called the Research-Extension-Far... more The Agricultural technology system (ATS), which, in Nigeria, is called the Research-Extension-Farmer-Input Linkage System [REFILS] comprises individuals who are expected to interact and effectively perform activities geared towards generation, dissemination, supply and use of innovations to achieve food security and poverty alleviation. However, the impact of the system is far below expectation due to challenges experienced by components of the linkage system. This study therefore assessed research and extension practitioners' perception of the component-wise challenges and effectiveness of Nigeria's REFILS. The seventy two (72) high calibre research and extension practitioners who participated in the National Extension Planning Review Meeting (NEPRM) for 2010 constituted the respondents. Findings show that practitioners were mostly males (75%), mean age=50.1 years, years of experience (X =21.3years) and 75% had post graduate degrees. The study also revealed weak perception of linkage effectiveness (grand X =2.016) with report writing (X =2.671), management interactions (X =2.522), policy formulation (X =2.387), as activities with strongest linkage effectiveness. Linkage effectiveness scores were weak in activities such as mass media communication (X =1.298), link with input and service providers (X =1.314), liaison services (X =1.429) and joint programme implementation reviews (X =1.462). Furthermore, analysis showed significant relationships between sex (r=-0.690), educational qualification (r=0.598) and years of working experience (r=0.506). Component-wise, most serious challenges (≥50% indication) to REFILS effectiveness include poor motivation, inadequate and erratic funding, dearth of capacity building opportunities, inadequate capital for farmers, absence of strong farmers' organizations, poor participation of input agencies and poor coordination. The study concludes that practitioners were weak in linkage effectiveness, especially in field level activities due to various component-wise challenges. The study recommends improved funding support and involvement of relevant stakeholders, especially farmers' organizations and input agencies in REFILS activities by government, private and donor agencies to enhance food security in Nigeria and by extension Africa. Introduction As a system the, Agricultural technology system (ATS) is made up of subsystems and components which are linked together. Linkage entails communication and working relationship established between two

Data relating participant farmer characteristics as well as yield were obtained by means of structured interview schedule from 80 respondents. Data analysis reveals the average yield of respondents was 202.38kg. Adoption of fadama-related technologies was low i.e. 3. While participation in fadama projects was low (65%). Respondents were about 37 years old, with low literacy level and fairly large household size (8). Respondents' productivity was significantly related to participation in fadama projects. (b = 0.335), education (b = 0.540) and family size (b = 0.601). The study therefore recommends active farmers involvement in fadama projects as well as upgrading their educational status through adult literacy classes and/or extension (ADP) training sessions.

Data were collected from 244 respondents using a two stage sampling technique. Data collected through a structured closed questionnaire were analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, Foster, Greer and Thorbecke model and logit regression analysis. Findings revealed that 48.8% of respondents were males and 51.2% were females. The modal age was 41-50 years and a mean of approximately 45 years. About 79.9% of respondents were married.35.7% did not go to school and 64.3% had formal education at various levels. The mean household size was approximately 6 persons. Respondents mean farm size was 0.8 hectares. The result of the logit regression analysis showed that sex (0.574), educational status (0.249) and farm size (-0.339) had significant influence on poverty status of respondents. It was concluded that poverty status among farmers in Delta South Senatorial District is high with gender issues, poor educational levels and small farm sizes accounting for the more for the high poverty status. It is recommended that in developing poverty reduction programmes in the area, the sex, educational attainment and farm size of the people should be critically considered.
