In this way, this study aimed to assess frailty in older patients admitted in convalescence units (CUs) and analyze its association with demographic, social and clinical characteristics. Methods: This cross-sectional study included older patients admitted in eight CUs of the Integrated Continued Care National Network in Northern Portugal. Exclusion criteria were: total ≤ 11 in Glasgow coma scale, < 10 in mini-mental state examination or being unable to communicate. A comprehensive protocol was administered to assess health-related and lifestyle characteristics, comorbidity, dependence on activities of daily living (ADL), depressive and anxiety symptoms, cognition, and socio-familial risk. Frailty was assessed by Tilburg frailty indicator (TFI). Results: A sample of 165 patients was included (median age = 77; 65% female), with 80% classified as frail, mostly women (P = 0.002), widowed (P = 0.016), shorter (P = 0.005), feeling more tired (P < 0.005) and with less energy (P < 0.005). Also, these patients reported more vision problems (P = 0.006), difficulties in walking (P = 0.022) and climbing stairs (P = 0.029), pain (P = 0.004), falls (P = 0.046), non-alcohol use (P = 0.043) and non-physical activity (P = 0.032). Frail patients had a higher number of previous hospitalizations (P = 0.018), comorbidity (P = 0.006), dependence on instrumental (P < 0.001) and basic (P = 0.006; P < 0.001) ADL, depressive (P < 0.001) and anxiety (P = 0.002) symptoms. After adjusting for covariates, frailty was associated with females (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 4.45, P = 0.011), vascular disease (aOR = 4.40, P = 0.040), vision problems (aOR = 10.85, P < 0.001), high dependency on instrumental ADL (aOR = 0.74, P = 0.002), and depressive symptoms (aOR = 1.37, P = 0.001). Conclusions: Frailty is high among older patients in CUs, particularly in females, with vascular disease, vision problems, instrumental ADL dependence and depressive symptoms. Thus, frailty should be screened, and preventive and therapeutic measures should be considered for those at high risk, in order to minimize possible negative consequences.

The present study aims to understand the usefulness and practicality of a therapeutic notepad, which is composed of inspiring quotes and tasks underlying happiness and well-being. 111 young people and adults, aged between 18 and 58 years (M= 21.81; SD= 5.34) participated in this study, being 47.3% male individuals and 52.7% female individuals. First, a sociodemographic questionnaire was applied to collect personal data; then was administered the Psychological Well-Being Manifestations Scale (Échelle de Mesure des Manifestations du Bien-Être Psychologique) which translates into a response instrument five-point likert type with five subscales including happiness. Finally, a semistructured interview was applied to understand the functionality of the therapeutic agenda. The results showed, both qualitatively and quantitatively, that the notepad can be assumed as an agent that promotes happiness and well-being as well as reducing the negative mood of individuals. This study focuses on the importance of well-being and happiness in the daily lives of individuals. This is an important contribution, as it allows to gauge that the notepad leads to positive and motivating results when applied.

Convergent validity of the scale was evaluated, against Tilburg Frailty Indicator. Test-retest reliability, sensitivity and specificity were assessed. Results: Overall, 51 patients were included (mean age = 78 years old). The Clinical Frailty Scale identified 43.1% patients with frailty. Kappa values for test-retest reliability (non-frail/frail) was 1.00. The intraclass correlation coefficient for the 9-point total scale was 0.999. A correlation between Clinical Frailty Scale and Tilburg Frailty Indicator was also found (rs = 0.683; p <...

Hematogones (HG) are B lymphoid cell precursors present in all individuals. HG absolute count grows after chemotherapy, during medullar recovery and it seems to be related to prognosis. Objectives: Determination of HG number in AML patients with intermediate-risk karyotype, with complete response (CR). Determine prognostic value for HG number in these patients. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 148 patients with non promyelocytic AML, treated with “7+3” chemotherapy induction, followed in our centre, from 1998 to 2011. HG quantification was executed after induction chemotherapy, with flow cytometry pannel (4 colours - CD34, CD10, CD19, CD20 e CD45) in blood marrow samples in patients with CR, according to Cheson et al. (JCO 2003). The patients characteristics were compared with a X2test for binary variables and a Mann-Whitney test for continuous variables. Survival was plotted with Kapl...

The incorporation of rituximab (R) in the 1st line chemotherapy (CT) regimen and in treatment relapse resulted in better progression-free survival (PFS) but the benefit in overall survival (OS) was observed in only one trial (Hiddemann W. et al, Blood 2006). Hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is the only treatment potentially curative, although the ideal time for its implementation remains undefined. AIM: Evaluation of the best treatment strategy and the impact of HSCT in PFS and OS in patients with relapsed FL. METHODS: Retrospective study including 85 patients with relapsed FL followed at a cancer care center between 2000-2012. Selection criteria: treatment naïve patients with the diagnosis of FL; absence of histological transformation at diagnosis and/or during the 1st line treatment. Survival analysis using the Kaplan-Meier method. Type of response defined acc...
