This article outlines the engineering design for a comprehensive energy performance upgrade of the indoor sport hall in Arkalochori, Greece, and presents the projected results. The indoor sport hall constitutes a major sport facility in the mainland of Crete, hosting a broad cluster of sport municipal activities and the official basketball games of the local team in the 2nd national category. Having being constructed in the mid ‘90s, the facility exhibits very low thermal performance, with considerably high U-factors for all constructive elements (from 4 to 5 W/m2∙K), still use of diesel oil for indoor space heating and domestic heat water production and ineffective, old lamps and luminaries covering the lighting needs of the facility. The energy performance upgrade of the indoor sport hall was holistically approached, through all possibly applicable passive and active measures: insulation of opaque surfaces and replacement of openings...

This article presents the proposed energy performance upgrade process and the achieved results for the municipal sports centre in Arkalochori, Greece. The facility consists of a swimming pool centre, an outdoor 8 × 8 football court, and two tennis and basketball courts. It operates with considerably high energy consumption due to the lack of any measure towards its energy efficiency improvement since its initial construction in 2002. Due to the significantly high heating cost, the swimming pool centre remains operative only during the summer period. The energy performance upgrade of the facility was holistically approached through all possibly applicable passive and active measures: insulation of opaque surfaces and replacement of openings, construction of a new, bioclimatic enclosure for the swimming pool’s centre and conversion of the current outdoor facility to an indoor one, installation of heat pumps for indoor space conditionin...

The composite nature of urban spaces -material/ digital -is understood as an opportunity to reconfigure public urban spaces without high-cost, difficult to apply interventions and, furthermore, to reactivate them by inserting dynamic, interactive and playful conditions that engage people and re-establis h their relations to the cities. The structuring of coexisting and interconnected material and digital aspects in public urban s paces is proposed through the implementation of hybridization processes. Hybrid spaces can fa scinate and provoke the public and especially younger people to get involved and interact with physical aspects of urban public spaces as well as digital representations or interpretations of those. Digital game's design in urban public s paces can be comprehended as a tool that allows architects to understand and to configure hybrids of material and digital conceptions and project all in one, as an inseparable totality. Digital technologies have for a long time now intervened in our perception of traditional dipoles such as subject -environment. Architects, es pecially in the past, have been res ponsible for material mediations and tangible interfaces that permit subjects to relate to their physical environments in a controlled and regulated manner; but, nowa days, architects are compelled to embody in design, the transition that is happening in all as pects of everyday life, that is, from material to digital realities. In addition, the disjunctive relation of material and digital realms is ceding and architects are now faced with the challenge that supposes the merging of both in a single, all-inclusive reality. The case study is a design project for a game implemented simultaneously in a s pecific urban space and on the internet. This project developed as the spring semester course New Media in Architecture at the Department of Architecture, Democritus University of Thrace, Greece is situated at the city of Xanthi. Composite cities can use design strategies and technological tools to configure augmented and appealing urban s paces tha t articulate and connect different realms in a single engaging reality.

Over and above the binary logic, the paper approximates how the philosophy of between contrives the architecture of interstitial thought, and how this architectural approach reshapes the limits of Humanities. This retroactive disciplinary movement appears mediated by the body and corporeal images, as the projective metaphors evoke the reality and become part of it. A variety of philosophical notions, considered as interdisciplinary thinking tools, is used to approach the architectural uncertainty: transindividuality emerges as an operation at a suprastant level for a dynamic association of otherness; the deleuzian fold prioritizes relation, than dualities, and promotes serendipity states: a sense of epiphany and an impression of unforced creative process where things occur naturally. As life and architecture draw the lines in-between dipoles, in the contemporary ...

The management system permits the organization of self-managed events and actions, offering support and assistance for the implementation of these actions in the offered spots of the city. Actions can be of cultural, commercial, educational or leisure-oriented nature and depending on their purpose the spots can be offered free of charge or with fees, creating a possibility for remuneration and providing a tool for development in underprivileged zones of the city. An important aspect is the emphasis on the digital outlook of the city, which is structured as an interface that allows communication with the management system and information upon actual, past and upcoming events.
