Hence, the purpose of this study: stocktaking of cutting-edge research articles in this field and eliciting the critical trends and issues shaping the knowledge, future research, and technical development perspectives on biodiversity conservation and tourism sustainability. The focus is on the trends, which are pivotal for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals until 2030. A hierarchical cluster analysis was undertaken with a KH Coder 3.0 tool to elicit topical co-occurrence networks for thematic words in academic papers from 2015 to 2020 on the topic, quarried from Google Scholar. The study’s main objective is to identify the necessary conditions and potential for ensuring both the sustainability and competitiveness of tourism in seaside and marine resorts located in or at coastal and marine protected areas on the example of Karklė (Lithuania). Based on the results of a benchmarking study of five South Baltic resorts using the Delphi technique, the survey team identified the main deficiencies of Karklė as a seaside and marine resort of an international scale. We address the deficiencies by applying a geographical information system as a decision-support tool for the Littoral Regional Park where Karklė is located. This paper demonstrates the possibilities of a Geographical Information System (GIS) for investig... more This paper demonstrates the possibilities of a Geographical Information System (GIS) for investigating and explicating the spatial variation of the short-range viewshed aesthetic appeal in a World Heritage coastal dune and forest area. The study pursues the following objectives: (1) develop and trial a GIS-based algorithm for computing the Aesthetic Appeal Index for a Short-Range Viewshed (ǣ); (2) deliver an output map showing the spatial variation of the computed ǣ values in the target territory and distribution of the zones with high scenic quality and potential aesthetic ecosystem services (PAES); and (3) assess management alternatives in zones with high PAES and high conservation value. This paper focuses on the deep geothermal energy utilisation from the Lower Cambrian sandy siltst... more This paper focuses on the deep geothermal energy utilisation from the Lower Cambrian sandy siltstone aquifer as a potential supply to the district heating system in Nīca, a small municipality in southwest Latvia. Based on this case study, we argue that it is technically and economically feasible to develop efficient geothermal heat stations in small municipalities rich in geothermal resources under three key preconditions:sufficient extractable heat resources of the aquifer;-ready availability of a nearby deep well; and-a plan for environmentally acceptable disposal of the cooled geothermal water to the surface waters. If these conditions are met, the deep geothermal energy utilisation in a small-scale district heating system might be economically viable and possibly more sustainable than a larger district heating system, where high-pressure re-injection of the cooled geothermal water into deep rock aquifers is necessary.

The objective of the article is to give a comprehensive assessment of the impact that physical ge... more The objective of the article is to give a comprehensive assessment of the impact that physical geographical factors of the coastal environment have on the South Baltic seaside resorts in the way it is reflected in planning documents (comprehensive plans, regional and tourism development strategies) of South Baltic seaside territorial entities. The seaside resorts and the adjacent coastal protected nature areas, particularly coastal national parks and UNESCO biosphere reserves, are the main focus of this study. The contents of 141 valid documents of spatial planning, management and development has been analysed. The studied comprehensive development plans, tourism strategies and other documents demonstrate that virtually all seaside municipalities in the South Baltic Region express a strong concern in increasing risk of coastal erosion and sea level rise related to the global climate change.

This paper examines third-country passengers' travel itineraries on the DFDS Seaways ferry route ... more This paper examines third-country passengers' travel itineraries on the DFDS Seaways ferry route linking Kiel, Germany with Klaipeda, Lithuania using a mixed-methods approach comprising qualitative and quantitative methods, including geographical information system spatial-cluster analysis. Survey results reveal the predominant third-country passenger groups (i.e. passengers from countries other than Germany and Lithuania) on ferries sailing from Kiel to Klaipeda and back were Latvian (28%), Dutch (20%), British (14%) and Danish (12%) nationals; 86% of Latvian passengers used the ferry to travel between home in Latvia and work in Western Europe. Western European passengers comprised a diverse segment of motorized tourists using the ferry in summer to reach the Baltic States faster than by land. The paper highlights the role of the Kiel-Klaipeda ferry route within the Baltic Sea motorized tourism circuit linking the Baltic and Nordic countries with Western Europe.
