The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Estrogen Receptor (ER), Human Epidermal Growth Receptor (HER2) and other factors on post-surgical survival of the patients with breast cancer using Bayesian approach for parametric proportional hazards model. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study. Data of 165 breast cancer patients who had undergone surgery at Ahvaz Healing Diagnostic Center from 2004 to 2014 were recorded in a data collection form. The variables of age, tumor size, number of lymph nodes involved, cancer grade, ER status and HER2 status were evaluated. Survival time was calculated from the date of surgery to the date of death or study end date (September 2015), in months. In the Bayesian approach in parametric survival analysis models with proportional hazards, the lateral distribution of parameters was estimated using MCMC method. Also, we evaluated efficiency of the models using the deviance information criterion. All data analysis steps were performed by using Stata15 software. Significance coefficients of the model were determined using the 95% credible interval. Results: The mean and standard deviation of age were 46.40 and 9.94 years, respectively. Deviance information criterion for Weibull parametric model was lower than those of other parametric models. Based on the Bayesian estimation of the Weibull's proportional hazards parametric model, tumor size (HR = 1.40), the number of involved lymph nodes (HR = 1.016), Ki67 status (HR = 1.115), tumor grade (HR = 1.022), HER2 status (HR = 1.760) and ER status (HR = 1.381) had a positive effect on risk of death. Age had a negative effect on risk of death (HR=0.978). Conclusion: Based on the Bayesian proportional hazards Weibull model, tumor size, the number of involved lymph nodes, Ki67, tumor's grade, HER2 and ER had a positive effect on the risk of death.

Methods: The data collection tool of this cross-sectional study was a researcher-made questionnaire with 28 questions in 4 parts (demographics, knowledge, attitude, and practice). After evaluating the validity and reliability of the questionnaire, it was completed by 384 female students of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences who were selected by stratified sampling method. SPSS software and Spearman correlation coefficient and Chi-square tests were used to analyze the data. Results: The highest level of knowledge was related to the the medical school students. A significant relationship was observed between the level of study and type of faculty with students' knowledge (P-value˂0.0001). The best attitude was for BS students. Significant correlation was observed between the level of education and the attitude towards cutaneous leishmaniasis (P-value= 0.019). Students of medical and health schools had good practice in dealing with the disease. Conclusion: In general, due to the relatively poor knowledge, attitude, and practice of the students, who are the first level of service givers to the the society, it is essential to educate them about the cutaneous leishmaniasis.

This study aimed to evaluate the levels of sex hormones in female and male patients with COVID-19 during hospitalization and one month after discharge. Methods: The levels of sex hormones including estradiol, progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), total testosterone, and free testosterone were measured in 162 female and male patients with COVID-19 infection during hospitalization and one month after discharge. A demographic questionnaire and a checklist were used to collect the data. The ANCOVA test was used to compare the level of hormones in patients with severe and moderate disease. Results: In the primary assessment, 162 patients were assessed for serum levels of sex hormones, while a month after discharge, only 69 patients provided consent for assessment, and nine had passed away. During hospitalization, female patients with severe diseas...

We assessed the value of PAPP-A within the first trimester for predicting pregnancy outcome. METHODS In a historical cohort study, we assessed 8460 consecutive pregnant women recruited for chromosomal abnormalities screening within the first trimester at Fertility Infertility and Perinatology Research Center, in Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences between April 2014 and April 2015. The women were categorized into two groups: pregnant women with PAPP-A levels below 0.4 multiples of MOM (n = 237) and those with higher levels of PAPP-A (n = 237). RESULTS The median value of MOM PAPP-A was 0.82 ± 0.78, with 237 women having MOM PAPP-A lower than 0.4. Compared to women with MOM PAPP-A higher than 0.4, those with lower MOM P...

Thus, conceptual learning in biostatistics is highly critical for postgraduate nursing students. A large proportion of students identify this course as the most anxiety-inducing course. The largest part of students' anxiety in the semester in which they take biostatistics course is manifested in the form of statistics anxiety in addition to test anxiety. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of the peer learning method in biostatistics course among postgraduate nursing students' final score and test and statistics anxiety. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted during the first semester of the academic year 2019-2020 in the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences. Students were divided into two separate classes according to their courses. In one class, biostatistics course was taught by peers, and the lecture method as the conventional method was used for teaching in the other class. Test and statistics anxiety questionnaires were completed by the students of both groups before the educational intervention and at the end of the semester. Data was analyzed by SPSS 20 using nonparametric tests. Results: The mean final score in the lecture and peer learning groups were respectively 9.9 ± 4.60 and 11.55 ± 4.76 (P = 0.245). At the end of the course, the mean scores of statistics and test anxiety decreased in the intervention group in comparison to the conventional group. Conclusions: Using the peer learning method in biostatistics course has a positive effect on reducing test and statistics anxiety and increasing final scores in postgraduate nursing students.

The aim of the study was to investigate DNA damage of SM in veterans who were exposed to SM, 23-27 years prior to this study. Materials and Methods: Blood samples were obtained from the veterans and healthy volunteers as negative controls. Lymphocytes were isolated from blood samples and DNA breaks were measured using single-cell microgel electrophoresis technique under alkaline conditions (comet assay). Single cells were analyzed with “Tri Tek Comet Score version 1.5” software and DNA break was measured based on the percentage of tail DNA alone, or in the presence of H2O2 (25 μM) as a positive control. Results: A total of 25 SM exposed male veterans and 25 male healthy volunteers with similar ages (44.66 ± 6.2 and 42.12 ± 5.75 years, respectively) were studied. Percentage of the lymphocyte DN...

Considering the complications of chemical drugs, the use of herbal medicines has now been favored due to the lack of changes in the normal vaginal flora. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of Satureja khuzestanica and clotrimazole vaginal creams for the treatment of candidal vulvovaginitis. A randomized clinical trial was conducted on 84 reproductive-aged women in the city of Ahvaz, Iran. Individuals were randomly divided into two treatment groups: 1% Satureja khuzestanica vaginal creams (n=42) and 1% clotrimazole vaginal cream (n=42) who used a one-full applicator daily for one week. About 4–7 days after the end of treatment, a clinical examination and laboratory re-tests were performed to determine the level of treatment. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U, t-test and Chi-square tests, with SPSS version 22. After the treatment, no significant differ...
