Those inequalities, like any other, are intrinsically unfair and should be fought against. In this One Pager, we show how gender inequalities in the labour market determine poverty levels. We answer the following question: which aspect of gender inequalities should be considered priority in the design of public

According to Paes de Barros et al(2000), average income of the 10% richest people in Brazil is 28 times higher than the average income of the 40% poorest people. In Argentina, it is 10 times, 13 times in

A seminal work on income convergence and growth was done by Solow (1956). After that, several papers had examined the characteristics and nature of the convergence process across countries and states, such as Baumol (1986), Barro and Sala-I-Martin (1992, 1997),

Our analysis is based on microsimulations for eight Latin American countries. We consider four aspects of gender inequalities: differences in labour market participation, differences in occupational status, wage discrimination and differences in characteristics. Our

It is argued that Bolsa Família, Chile Solidario and Familias en Acción should be analysed within the broader social protection strategies in which they are meant to be components. Such an approach can help generate thinking on ways to improve the impacts of the programmes in terms of gender equality. A detailed description of the programmes' design and implementation features is provided in order to understand both their rationale and their impacts. We conclude that the programmes do tackle a number of gendered vulnerabilities but also have clear limits with regard to a more decisive role in tackling gender inequities.

But it is still unclear how much of each impact is triggered by the extra cash (income effect), and how much is triggered by change in attitudes/behaviour because of the awareness and/or enforcement of conditionalities and, in some cases, such as Tekoporã in Paraguay, visits from social workers.
