The objective was to study the status of cooking skills and consumption of ready meal among university students in the city of Barcelona, assessing their association with sociodemographic variables and confidence in some culinary skills and knowing how to cook. Cross-sectional study, carried out during the 2014-2015 academic year, 525 students (81.3% women, median age 21 years) using an on-line questionnaire. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed; odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated. Between 53% and 89% of the students reported feeling very confident in 10 of the 18 cooking skills. No statistically significant differences were observed by sex, and between 62% and 86% of those over 21 years expressed great confidence in 9 competitions. The consumption of ready meal was prevalent (49.4%) and associated with age (OR=0.95 95% CI: 0.91-0.99), gender (male, OR=1.98 95% CI: 1.23-3.18) and not knowing how t...

Knowledge is necessary so that the professional, parental and/or social environment does not trivialize or ignore their sexuality. General aim: To provide information on sexual education for people with physical disabilities in Catalonia. Study design: Exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional study. Sample: 135 surveys from subjects aged over 18 years with physical disability Instrumentation: Sexual Health Survey for People with Physical Disability ESSPDF / 2016. Outcomes: The preliminary results of the sexual education section are presented. 43% of the sample rated the degree of usefulness of the sexual information received as “Very useful/useful” and 9.6% had not received any information. 63% valued the information they had as “V...
What effects do mobile phones have on people's health? by World Health Organisation's Reg... more What effects do mobile phones have on people's health? by World Health Organisation's Regional Office of Europe in 2006. This is a Health Evidence Network (HEN) synthesis report assessing the clinical effects of daily exposure to mobile phones in general populations. It addresses the impact on developing head and brain tumours, other morbidity-related outcomes and summarizes the biological effects of RF and microwave radiation. The report shows that the evidence available does not provide a clear pattern to support an association between exposure to RF and microwave radiation from mobile phones and direct effects on health. It however cautions that lack of available evidence of detrimental effects on health should not be interpreted as evidence of absence of such effects and recommends a precautionary approach to the use of this communication technology until more scientific evidence becomes available.

The pooled OR for MetS in a comparison of the highest to the lowest category of Western dietary patterns was 1.28 (95 % CI 1.17, 1.40; P for heterogeneity =0.0; and I 2 = 72.0 %) in cross-sectional studies, and the RR was 0.96 (95 % CI 0.53, 1.73; P for heterogeneity =0.102; I 2 = 62.6 %) in cohort studies. Conclusions The results from cross-sectional studies showed that a prudent/healthy pattern is associated with a lower prevalence of MetS, whereas a Western/unhealthy is associated with an increased risk for MetS. Additional prospective studies are needed to confirm the association between dietary patterns and MetS.

The objective of this meta-analysis was to estimate the association between empirically derived dietary patterns and CVD. PubMed was searched for observational studies of data-driven dietary patterns that reported outcomes of cardiovascular events. The association between dietary patterns and CVD was estimated using a random-effects meta-analysis with 95 % CI. Totally, twenty-two observational studies met the inclusion criteria. The pooled relative risk (RR) for CVD, CHD and stroke in a comparison of the highest to the lowest category of prudent/healthy dietary patterns in cohort studies was 0·69 (95 % CI 0·60, 0·78; I2=0 %), 0·83 (95 % CI 0·75, 0·92; I2=44·6 %) and 0·86 (95 % CI 0·74, 1·01; I2=59·5 %), respectively. The aim of the study is to determine, by in situ hybridization, HPV DNA in patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), assessing the prevalence rate, the association with epidemiologic factors and the correlation with classic diagnostic procedures (cytology, colposcopy and histology). Among 138 patients diagnosed with CIN, HPV was determined in 75 treated by excisional procedures. All cases underwent pap-smear, colposcopy, and colposcopically directed biopsy. Histologic diagnosis was as follows: 1 cervical condyloma (1.3%); 31 CIN-I (41.3%); 23 CIN II (30.7%), and 20 CIN-III (26.7%). HPV was detected in 31 cases (41.3%), being more frequent in higher histologic grades (35.5%) CIN-I, 43.5% CIN-II and 45% CIN-III). No association between cytologic, colposcopic and histologic diagnoses and HPV positivity was observed. HPV detection in patients with false negative cyt...

From data collected in our population-based registry, we observed a 1.3- and a 1.6-fold increase in AIDS prevalence and incidence rates, respectively. In our setting, the new criteria appear to affect case ascertainment in male intravenous drug abusers, with extrapulmonary tuberculosis being the disease that accounts for the major increase in the identified cases. An additional effect of this case revision has been on the median survival time of AIDS patients, which will probably increase due to the use of the new definition criteria.
