The project had as main goal to enhance the competitiveness of the tourism sector of special interests in Tierra del Fuego, a key sector of Southern Patagonia, through the dissemination and transfer of technologies and knowledge, acquired in over 10 years of research and projects, onto the territory and local agents. These Cultural Routes build an innovative offer, capable of structuring the diverse touristic resources and strengthening the basis for the development of a new stage of national and international tourism market, located on the southern extreme of Chile and America.

The category of cultural landscapes, that highlights the natural and cultural heritage of Chile a... more The category of cultural landscapes, that highlights the natural and cultural heritage of Chile and its history, have an exceptional importance, since they contribute to foster the national pride for the cultural assets located throughout the peculiar Chilean geography, and propose a correspondence between society and environment, as well as a reciprocal interaction with the cultures that formalize and determine them in their transforming action. Some of the cultural landscapes presented in this publication, arise together with other territorial and economic heritage, reached by Chile during the second half of the nineteenth century. In this period Chile was consolidated as a country, strengthened the expansion of the national state and set forth the boundaries and contents of its social and territorial structure. In addition, it incorporated new human groups with their cultural traditions, while at the same time increasing the trade of commodities with the British and American economies. Likewise, the cultural landscapes highlight other cosmovisions, cultures and ways of life of indigenous peoples who, according to their ancient traditions, are part of nature and its various ecosystems, immersed in interrelated territories which are part of an environment with its particular biological and cultural manifestations. For the most part, these cultural landscapes evolve, as is the case of Cape Horn, Tierra del Fuego, Chiloe, the Mapuche people, the Central Valley, Santiago, Rapa Nui, Valparaiso and the Ruta de la Sierra. Meanwhile, the coal mining landscape in Lota, the copper company town in Sewell and the nitrate operations in northern Chile are relicts' cultural landscapes, in which the progression of its main industrial function came to an end, with the exception of the María Elena company, the last of the nitrate cities.

This knowledge base should ensure maximum objectivity and transparency in sustainability assessment within the decision-making process. A description of the ecological-environmental, economic, social and institutional system that is to be managed is needed in order to develop knowledge about the network of relations that underlie the functioning of the system and the interactions that are responsible for potential synergies. The transformation of this information into conceptual and mathematical models is a useful tool for developing effective and relevant sustainability indicators that are oriented towards management needs. This paper presents a conceptual model that defines the components and interactions of a representative urban-rural system in the Basque Country. It also discusses the assessment f...

This paper aims to analyze the relevance of applying the notion of extreme cultural landscape to ... more This paper aims to analyze the relevance of applying the notion of extreme cultural landscape to Tierra del Fuego, as a complementary category to those defined by Unesco. It states that in Chile there are anumber of territories at the margins –in the end, along the border– that have been built as landscapes, specifics and concretes, where the exploitation of natural resources has proved profitable and the building of human settlements as been allowed. This is the case of Tierra del Fuego, considered as a landscape and as a resource, according to Gregotti and Sola-Morales, that has been formed by a human process on the geographical support of Tierra del Fuego, and owes its existence to a process that transformed this territory into a product, placed south of the ice fields, southeast of the Strait of Magellan, in the confines of America, between south latitudes 52 and 55 degrees. On the other hand, reading the area in terms of palimpsest, according to Corboz, brings out several layers to form the extreme landscapes in Tierra del Fuego, considering some key issues including: the nomination of Magellan as extreme and special area by Cideze; the geographical context of Tierra del Fuego, as the exceptional finish of Patagonia and the gateway to Antarctica; the important collection of narratives and maps bequeathed by European explorers who recognized it; the rich cultural legacy of the aboriginal selknam; and the human settlements, which emerged at the late nineteenth century, setting some recognizable and typical landscapes. In this way, we argued that the extreme cultural landscapes in Tierra del Fuego have been formed in the manner of overlapping layers, like a palimpsest, in a construction that transcends the physical territory, to settle in the Western cultural fantasy as an imaginary of that remote boundary.

The two last of these oficinas were María Elena (founded in 1925) and Pedro de Valdivia (1931), whose development marked the introduction of the Guggenheim industrial system. Their urban design was closely related to the industrial cities of Europe and the United States, as well as the Spanish urban tradition. María Elena used an octagonal street plan, while Pedro de Valdivia is based on a crossing pattern.

Architecture and urban heritage have been decisive in the modernization of the historical centre ... more Architecture and urban heritage have been decisive in the modernization of the historical centre of Santiago de Chile. As early as the first half of the nineteenth century they added value to this area of the capital. Public authorities, with the support of regulations, identified valuable urban heritage, incorporating it into urban transformations. For various practical or historical reasons, buildings and public spaces were preserved and eventually reused, giving birth to a renewed idea of planning, which took advantage of this existing heritage. The incorporation of new typologies into the colonial urban fabric, together with the conservation of traditional buildings and public spaces, produced memorable places, both in the republican and modern city. They enriched the urban practices and the city landscapes, offering a valuable continuity with the colonial and republican past. The integration of old and new stimulated the emergence of an urbanism of quality. This article focuses on three specific moments of that peculiar modernization process: the consolidation of the original colonial grid (1818-1846), Vicuña Mackenna's Transformation Plan (1872-1875) and Santiago's first official Urbanization Plan (1939).
