Undiagnosed thyroid disorders (TD) have a high risk for diabetes mellitus (DM) patients. A common complication among these patients is cardiovascular disease. This study aims to assess the association of TD among diabetes patients. It i s a crosssectional study, and 338 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were observed through a simple random sampling method from a public sector hospital. The diabetes status of patients was confirmed through clinical and laboratory investigation. Those patients who were under treatment of thyroid were excluded from the study. The chi-square test was used for analysis, and a p-value <0.05 was considered significant. The frequency of TD among diabetic patients was 47.6%. The main type of TD was subclinical hypothyroidism, and its prevalence is 43.8% and 23.5% among patients with T1DM and T2DM, respectively. Subclinical hyperthyroidism prevalences are 12.3% and 24.4% among TIDM and T2DM patients, respectively. The study found a high-frequency rate of TD among DM patients. Therefore, there is a need for regular screening of DM patients for TD and increased awareness regarding TD among DM patients.

The study also intended to find out the impact of cleft severity, gender and age on the perceived dental anxiety. Methods The study was composed of a sample of 70 adult participants who received and completed dental treatments. After sending self-addressed envelopes with consent forms and Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) to 192 potential participants, 35 participants with CL/P (CL/P group) and 35 participants with no CL/P (control group), agreed to participate. Data were analysed using Mann–Whitney U test. A two-tailed P-value < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results 54.3% of adults with CL/P (23 females and 12 males, age range from 16 to 72 years) reported normal dental anxiety, while the remaining 45.7% reported moderate dental anxiety. No extreme dental anxiety were recorded in the CL/P group. These results were similar to the control group and there were no significant differences between groups (p > 0.05). Female participants recorded higher median anxiety scores than male participants in the CL/P group, and participants with cleft lip had higher median scores than participants with cleft lip and palate. However, these were not statistically significant. Conclusion The results suggest that CL/P did not affect dental anxiety levels for participants with the CL/P as there were no extreme cases and their results were comparable to a general non-cleft sample.

Although some evidence exists as to the areas of the brain involved and how processing of data occurs in young individuals, nothing has been published on people with diabetes. The purpose of this study was to examine the electroencephalogram (EEG) during common sensorimotor and balance training tasks and to relate these to task difficulty. Subjects and Methods: Postural sway and EEG change of alpha, beta, and sigma wave bands were measured in 17 young subjects, 10 older subjects, and 10 subjects with diabetes during eight progressively more difficult balance tasks with eyes open and closed, feet in tandem or apart, and on foam or a firm surface. Results: EEG power of beta and sigma wave bands showed significant increases on the cortical and parietal areas of the brain relative to the control tasks when eyes were open (P < 0.05). The cortical involvement decreased as the task became more difficult with vision and somatosensory information reduced, whereas that of the parietal area increased with task difficulty. The greatest increase was in subjects with diabetes, and the least was in younger people. Individuals with diabetes had increased sigma and beta EEG power in all regions of the brain examined with increased complexity of the balance task. Conclusions: This study demonstrated cortical and parietal involvement in static balance tasks commonly used in sensorimotor training. The results support the proposal that there was increased subcortical control with increase in task difficulty in the young subjects, but in subjects with diabetes, there was a major increase in activity across the brain.
