This study aimed to identify the prevalence of risk of smartphone addiction and its associated factors among medical and dental students in a public university in Malaysia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among pre-clinical medical and dental students using convenience sampling. Questions regarding sociodemographic profile and responses to the Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Version (SAS-SV) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Score questionnaire (DASS-21) were collected. Multiple logistic regression testing was used to analyse the factors associated with smartphone addiction. Results: We invited 409 pre-clinical medical and dental students to participate voluntarily, resulting in a response rate of 80.2%. The prevalence of high-risk smartphone addiction among the participants was 47.9%. Male participants, participants who used smartp...

It is a prayer performs in the last third of the night after Isha' prayer, which requires a person to wake up from his sleep. This practice may interfere with their sleep and leads to poor sleep quality. This study aimed to assess the association between Tahajjud practice and poor sleep quality among medical students at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). A cross-sectional study was conducted among 500 medical students in IIUM Kuantan using purposive and quota sampling. A validated self-reported questionnaire including Tahajjud practice and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were distributed from 17 th May to 19 th July 2019. Descriptive statistics were used to measure the practice of Tahajjud and the prevalence of poor sleep quality. Logistic regression was used to measure the relationship between poor sleep quality and Tahajjud as well as other factors. The response rate was 91.2%. The median number of Tahajjud performed was 1 night per week. The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 59.6%. Very interestingly, simple logistic regression analysis revealed that those performing Tahajjud were 13% less likely to have poor sleep quality compared to those who did not perform it. However, multiple logistic regression failed to find any significant relationship between Tahajjud and poor sleep quality. It is crucial to highlight that Tahajjud prayer did not lead to poor sleep quality among medical students. Since it is a highly rated practice in Islam, they should be encouraged to perform it.

The objective of this study is to assess the willingness among Muslims in Malaysia to have dental treatment during fasting month. Method: A cross sectional study was carried out on 246 Muslim adults attended primary care clinic in Kuantan, Malaysia. Face-to-face interviews with a structured questionnaire were used to collect sociodemographic profile and to assess the willingness to come for dental treatment during fasting month. We examined association between sociodemographic profile and their willingness to come for dental treatment. Result: Majority participants (70.7%) were unwilling to have dental treatment during fasting month. However, 89% of them were willing to have dental treatment during emergency. Only 11.4% will advise others not to have dental treatment during fasting months. There was no significant association between their willingness to have dental treatment during fasting and the sociodemographic profile. Conclusion: Majority of the Muslims were unwilling to have common dental treatment during fasting but still willing to have it during emergency situation.

Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from July to August 2018 among 75 residents of Rumah Ehsan, Terengganu (the largest care home in east coast Malaysia). The oral health status of the residents was examined by one dental specialist based on two domains: the number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMF-T) and the edentulous state. Their sociodemographic profile and self-perceived oral health status were collected through interviews. Multiple logistic regressions were used to determine factors associated with oral health satisfaction. Results: Unsurprisingly, majority of residents had high DMF-T score with median DMF-T score of 29.0 (interquartile range [IQR] = 12). On the contrary, majority of them (64%) perceived that they had good oral health status and 68% were satisfied with their current oral health status. There was no significant association between the actual oral health status and their perceived satisfaction. However, older age, Malay, and those eating dependently were less likely satisfied with their oral health status. Meanwhile, those who were dependent to the staff to brush their teeth were more likely satisfied with their oral health status. Conclusion: There was a discrepancy between actual and self-perceived oral health status among residents in care home. Hence, every effort is necessary to improve the awareness and knowledge among them in order to improve the oral health.

A structured questionnaire was used to assess the perception about common dental procedures during fasting on 377 Muslim adults in Kuantan, Malaysia. The total cumulative score derived from the perception section was categorized into good and poor perception based on the median score, where a score less than median score was categorized as poor perception and a score equal to or more than median score was categorized as good perception. We further examined association between perception score with sociodemographic data. Majority respondents perceived that most of the dental procedures will not nullify their fast with 50.9% of them categorized as having good perception based on median score. There was significant association between perception with education level (p=0.04) and Islamic education level (p<0.001). Majority of the Muslims perceived that most dental procedure...

Unlike the original male or female, transgender women have their own unique needs as well as health problems related to their lifestyle. Furthermore, some of their health problems are related to the general population, such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and sexually transmitted disease (STD). Most authors postulated this, because Muslim patients may perceive dental procedures during Ramadhan will nullify their fast. (Shaeesta et al., 2015,Darwish., 2005, Raja et al., 2000) However, to date, there is no study conducted to assess Muslims’ perception towards dental procedures in Ramadhan. Therefore, this research is to assess the perception towards dental procedures in Ramadhan among Muslim adults. This is important to understand their perception and to provide a better dental treatment plan during fasting month for Muslim patients.
