While being theoretically a promising technology, the design and implementation of interactive TV platforms are bringing new challenges to the IT society, due to the fundamental differences between TV sets and PCs environments. The SEITV project is presented in this paper, where a set of design considerations for interactive digital TV have been analyzed and applied to the creation of interactive services for entertainment and education.

PLOS One, 2012

Human papillomavirus E2 protein is a transcription factor of viral gene expression and DNA replic... more Human papillomavirus E2 protein is a transcription factor of viral gene expression and DNA replication. Here we show that PARP is a positive regulator of the E2 protein of human papillomavirus type 18 (HPV-18). PARP interacted with the COOH terminal region of HPV-18 E2 in vitro. The E2 interaction domain within PARP is located in the NH 2 -terminal zinc finger motif and the BRCT motif included in the automodification domain. Overexpression of either wild type or the NH 2terminal region of PARP containing zinc finger and BRCT stimulated E2-dependent transcription. Gel retardation assay indicates that PARP augments DNA binding activity of E2 in vitro. We also show that PARP-1 is recruited to E2-dependent promoter in vivo using ChIP assay. These results suggest that PARP serves a transcriptional co-activator in E2-dependent transcription by interacting directly with the HPV E2 protein.

We report a case with an unusual radiological manifestation as a solitary sclerotic lesion of the right iliac bone. Its main features on conventional radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging are described, and the main radiological differential diagnoses are discussed to help with the characterization of this syndrome, which requires a combination of clinical, laboratory, and radiological data. On the other hand, although our patient had an excellent clinical response to anakinra, the sclerotic lesion remained unchanged on follow-up X-ray examinations.

A total of 642 patients were evaluated. A 1-year follow-up, which included physical examinations, electrocardiography, echocardiography and stress tests, was completed in 192 patients. Data processing included calculation of average and percentage values. At follow-up, 90% of patients were asymptomatic at 2 days after surgery, with normal cardiac monitoring; baseline and control ECGs showed myocardial infarction in 9.1% of patients. Baseline ECGs showed pericarditis as well in 27% of patients and repolarization changes in 35.2%. The latter became normal within 1 to 6 months after the trauma. All (100%) of the patients had a functional status I stress test, and 56% had a normal echocardiography. In conclusion, the epidemiologic behavior of penetrating cardiac trauma is identical to that of general trauma. ECG is useful during the postsurgery period for diagnosis of traumatic myocardial infarction. Likewise, the stress test is useful in patients with myocardial infarction and echocardiography in the presence of either myocardial infarction or any symptom suggesting anatomic or functional alterations of the heart.

Chemical Engineering Journal, 2011

Processes of carbonation of calcium-rich aqueous industrial wastes from acetylene production were... more Processes of carbonation of calcium-rich aqueous industrial wastes from acetylene production were performed mimicking rock weathering, using the atmospheric carbon dioxide as reactant. This residue was carbonated exposing it to the air in artificial pools with controlled solid-to-liquid and surface-tovolume ratios, and the efficiency of this simple mineral carbonation process was maximized. Considering realistic values of just one acetylene production plant, the intelligent handling of the calcium-rich waste would make it possible to counteract the emission of around 800 t of carbon dioxide per year, so the CO 2 emissions of the acetylene production could be completely compensated and its carbon footprint significantly reduced.

In both a compression wedge fracture was diagnosed, but a careful study of the anteroposterior radiographs showed that the presumed injury was a butterfly vertebra. This rare congenital anomaly, which is usually without clinical significance, may be mistaken for a wedge fracture unless the anteroposterior view is correctly assessed.

The families were grouped according to the fulfillment of the Amsterdam II criteria or the Bethesda guidelines. We screened all probands by single-strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) and direct DNA sequencing. Eleven families fulfilled the Amsterdam criteria II and 12 families the Bethesda guidelines. Germline mutations were detected in 11 families, which corresponds to a mutation detection rate of 48%. When only families fulfilling the Amsterdam II criteria were analyzed, the mutation detection rate rose to 82%. Only 8% of the mutation detection rate was found in families following the Bethesda guidelines. Three mutations were shared by two different families, which corresponds to a total of eight different mutations, seven of them found in the MLH1 gene and one in the MSH2 gene. We have identified four mutations that have not been previously reported to the International Collaborative Group of HNPCC. Three of these are pathogenic, a single base substitution (C > T) at codon 640, exon 17, a G deletion at codon 619, exon 16 and in the MLH1 gene and a two-nucleotide deletion (TG) at codon 184, exon 3 in the MSH2. Also, an unclassified variant, a substitution (C > G) at the codon 141, exon 5 of the MLH1, was detected.

Research paper thumbnail of CT Protocol for Acute Stroke: Tips and Tricks for General Radiologists1

Imaging plays a key role in current guidelines for thrombolysis, and knowledge of classic early ischemic signs or depiction of hemorrhage at nonenhanced computed tomography (CT) is necessary (although not sufficient) for a satisfactory imaging study. A modern CT examination must also include perfusion CT and CT angiography. Perfusion CT delineates the ischemic tissue (penumbra) by showing increased mean transit time with decreased cerebral blood flow (CBF) and normal or increased cerebral blood volume (CBV), whereas infarcted tissue manifests with markedly decreased CBF and decreased CBV. CT angiography can depict the occlusion site, help grade collateral blood flow, and help characterize carotid atherosclerotic disease. A complete CT study (nonenhanced CT, perfusion CT, and CT angiography) may be performed and analyzed rapidly and easily by general radiologists using a simple standardized protocol and may even facilitate diagnosis by less experienced radiologists in affected patients.
