As one type of aneurysms, an intracranial aneurysm is notably dangerous due to its thin vessel wall and high rate of rupture. The objective of this study in vitro is to analyze the hemodynamics in an intracranial aneurysm using a silicone phantom. The feasibility of the phantom is verified. In order to visualize and quantify the flow in the phantom, time-resolved 2-dimensional phase-contrast MRI sequence is applied. With post-processing of images, velocity profile and 3-dimensional path lines are obtained and analyzed.

A new voxel-based rigid-body registration algorithm, including: (1) a standardization of grey levels procedure by means of similarity measure optimisation, (2) a new full 2-D convolution cubic interpolation zooming procedure, (3) a low computational cost multi-scale iterative procedure, that uses the zoomed versions of images to be registered, is proposed. It allows up to 1/8 pixel accuracy.

MR images were obtained at two positions along the common carotid artery, separated by a distance of 5 cm. In each phase of a MR series, carotid region was automatically extracted and then its area distension waveform could be obtained. Sixteen volunteers with no symptoms of cardiovascular diseases were studied. For local PWV estimation, three delay estimation principles were tested and produced the following values: intersecting tangents method (M1): 4.72 ± 1.40 m/s, second derivative method (M2): 4.94 ± 1.68 m/s and cross-correlation method (M3): 5.03 ± 1.17 m/s. The crosscorrelation method showed a relative high reliability as its least standard deviation.

Since the new national status of technical staff in the public service by decree of September 5th of 1991, it allows to access directly to the level of Chief Hospital Engineer (first category, second class, by ordinance of October 23rd, 1992). Biomedical Engineers jobs in French hospitals are selected after an examination organized by the recruiting hospital. Master's graduates are most often the best qualified.

Knowledge and skills have been acquired since 1974 through professional specialization courses and new programs such as master's degrees, engineering and PhD degrees, and continuing education courses for technicians. To face current hospitals needs, new investments in distance learning have been made. The first results are presented in the following.
