RVF is exotic to the United States; however, mosquito species native to this region can serve as biological vectors for the virus. Thus, accidental or malicious introduction of this virus could result in RVFV becoming endemic in North America. Such an event would likely lead to significant morbidity and mortality in humans, and devastating economic effects on the livestock industry. Currently, there are no licensed vaccines for RVF that are both safe and efficacious. To address this issue, we developed two recombinant RVFV vaccines using vaccinia virus (VACV) as a vector for use in livestock. The first vaccine, vCOGnGc, was attenuated by the deletion of a VACV gene encoding an IFN-γ binding protein, insertional inactivation of the thymidi...

Steers were assigned (7 repetitions/ treatment) to individual pens (16 m2) equipped with automatic waterers and 1.2 m fence-line feed bunks. The experiment lasted 56 days. Treatments were: 1) no bST, no implant; 2) implant; and 3) bST + implant. Compared to implanted cattle, the combination of exogenous bovine somatotropin and anabolic implants did not enhance growth performance or observed dietary energy. Compared to nonimplanted cattle, anabolic implants increased dry matter intake (DMI, 8.3%), average daily gain (ADG, 18.5%), gain efficiency (ADG:DMI; 7.9%), dietary net energy (6%), and apparent energy retention per unit of DMI (7%). Implantation reduced the estimated maintenance coefficients of intact Holstein calves by around 17%. The combinations of exogenous bovine somatotropin and anabolic implants did not enhance the growth performance or dietary energy of intact Holstein cattle fed a high-energy finishing diet.

Rabies is a fatal infection of the central nervous system produced by a Lyssavirus of the family ... more Rabies is a fatal infection of the central nervous system produced by a Lyssavirus of the family Rhabdoviridae. The virus is distributed worldwide and is primarily transmitted by rabid animal bites, with multiple reservoirs depending on the region. The vampire bat Desmodus rotundus is distributed in several states of Mexico and is considered the main vector of rabies in cattle. In the state of Baja California, no cases of paralytic rabies have been reported. In this work, we report the first three cases of rabies in feedlot cattle showing nervous signs, which were later confirmed in a reference laboratory by immunofluorescent analysis. Considering that the majority of feedlot cattle are introduced to Baja California from other states of Mexico where rabies is considered endemic, it is necessary to strengthen current programs of vaccination to reduce the rate of infected animals in their places of origin to avoid the spread of rabies to other geographic areas of the country.

A cross-sectional study was conducted in order to detect the pathogens involved in BRD. A total of 88 animals with respiratory signs were sampled for diagnosis using PCR. The detected pathogens were bovine respiratory syncytial virus (80.6%), Mannheimia haemolytica (79.5%), Pasteurella multocida (68.1%), parainfluenza 3 virus (23.8%), bovine herpes virus-1 (20.4%), and bovine viral diarrhea virus (11.3%). The average number of treatments applied per animal was 1.3 with an estimated treatment cost of 16 USD per treatment/animal. Animals receiving more than one treatment averaged costs exceeding 38 USD per animal. In total, 77% of all animals received the first treatment during the first 3 weeks after arrival. We found a relationship between shrink percentage and the distance traveled by the livestock from its origin to the feedlot (P = 0.049). BRD represents a costly condition for feedlot operations. It is imperative that cattleman and veterinary practitioners recognize the necessity to apply additional preventive medicine strategies to reduce the impact of BRD. Preconditioning and a more systematic use of methaphylaxis may improve our ability to accurately identify the most effective strategies to reduce the impact of BRD.
