The performance and computational complexity of the lattice PDFE is analyzed, evaluated through computer simulation, and compared with other equalizers. It is shown that the lattice PDFE requires about one half as many computations as the conventional lattice DFE when both have the same number of taps.

The use of an intersymbol interpolation method in training fractionally spaced equalizers (FSEs) ... more The use of an intersymbol interpolation method in training fractionally spaced equalizers (FSEs) is investigated. It is shown that the optimal interpolation filter depends on the amplitude frequency response of the transmitter filter and the channel. Using a nonoptimal interpolation filter increases the stead-state mean-square error of the FSE. An interpolated complex FSE (CFSE) using a stochastic gradient, or LMS, adaptive algorithm has very little advantage over an LMS CFSE with symbol-rate updating. However, an interpolated LMS phase-splitting FSE (PS-FSE) has a convergence speed that is twice as fast as a conventional PS-FSE. Special precautions for evaluating the performance of interpolated FSEs are discussed, and a novel evaluation scheme is proposed

In this paper a numerically robust algorithm, based on the modified Gram-Schmidt (MGS) method, is presented. The algorithm can be efficiently realized using a systolic architecture and is capable of handling both exponential and finite memory windows in order to cope with time-varying data. Finally,

It is shown that a muitichannel LS estimation algorithm with a different number of parameters to be estimated in each channel can be implemented by cascading lattice stages of nondescending dimension to form a generalized lattice structure. VTC'93, p.400-403, May 19993) are evaluated. A general analysis of the receiver performance that extends the previous results and provides insight into the system performance and design considerations is given. A similar analysis is then performed for evaluation

It is found that the step size in the coefficient update plays a key role in the convergence and stability of the algorithm. An upper bound for the step size is derived that ensures the stability of the DLMS. The relationship between the step size and the convergence speed, and

Practical estimator methods and sequences are introduced for the reference symbol based DS-CDMA radio (denoted “RC”). It is a physical layer scheme involving insertion of a known training sequence into the coded, interleaved bit stream for an IS-95-like CDMA reverse channel. This paper presents the principle estimators needed for implementation of an RC receiver, and frame error rate (FER) results for a flat fading channel. The frame error rate or Eb/No required for a 1% FER is given for both idealized and realistic conditions concerning time varying carrier frequency offset and delay slew of the received timing. A comparison to IS-95 shows a 2 dB improvement

The authors propose to use a novel joint data and channel estimation technique to improve performance. The basic idea of this method was described by N. Seshadri (1990) in the context of blind equalization. Simulation results indicate that this approach solves the problems of decision delay and divergence caused by error decision feedback in conventional maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE). The specified IS-54 requirement of 19 dB at a BER of 3% and a speed of 100 km/h can be met with a margin of 8 dB. This result is 4.5 dB better than the conventional maximum likelihood receiver

The FLO Air Interface is a key component of the MediaFLO system developed by QUALCOMM as an alternative mobile multicast technology for the efficient transmission of multiple multi-media streams to mobile devices using TV and multi-media channel bandwidths in VHF, UHF, or L-band. The main concepts and features of the FLO Air Interface including the modulation and coding techniques used, the frame structure, and the different sub-channels within the physical layer are described. The available data rates as well as other characteristics of FLO are also described. Finally, the performance of the FLO physical layer in representative channel environments is presented.
