The research carried out with a total of 127 participants from Çukurova University. They were 55 (36 female, 19 male) pre-service science & technology teachers and 72 (21 female, 51 male) pre-service social studies teachers. Instruments were applied during the spring semester of 2009-2010 education year. The aim of this research is to examine the modeling of the epistemological views and learning sty... more The aim of this research is to examine the modeling of the epistemological views and learning styles in the platform of Euclidean geometry of the children and the relationship between the epistemological views and their learning styles. For this purpose, this research is carried out with 128 children (64 girls, 64 boys) from the age groups of 5-6 representing the preoperational stage, 136 children (77 girls, 59 boys) from the age groups of 9-10 representing the concrete operation stage, and 151 children (75 girls, 76 boys) from age groups of 13-14 representing the formal operation stage. All the 415 children participated in the research forming the sample groups of the research are chosen from the different public schools in Ankara province. Epistemology is a branch of philosophy that focuses on the source, nature, limitations, system an... more Epistemology is a branch of philosophy that focuses on the source, nature, limitations, system and accuracy of human knowledge. Children's epistemological views start to develop in the very early years as they gradually develop the ability to understand others' beliefs, actions, and desires, with primary attention to the onset of this cognitive achievement occurs between the ages of 3 and 5 (Burr and Hofer, 2002). The purpose of the current study was to analyze and model epistemological views of five-year-old children. The mathematical model developed for this study attempts to predict to what direction the missing domains in young children's epistemological thoughts will be evolved. Significant and profound changes in children's concept of the mind occurs between the ages of 3 and 5, allowing a five-year-old perform better in some tasks in the cognitive field (Gopnik and Astington, 1988). This study was carried out with a total of 183 five-year-old children (79 boys and 84 girls), from five state preschools. The Epistemological Beliefs Scale for Children (EBSC) was used for the data collection. EBSC is based on Elder's (2002) Scientific Epistemological Beliefs Scale (SEBS) and was adapted for children by the researchers of the current study. EBSC consists of 25 practical items in the following five sub-dimensions: authority/accuracy, knowledge production process, sources of knowledge, hypothesizing, and change of knowledge. EBSC was prepared as a three-point Likert-type scale with the Cronbach alpha value of .87. According to the results of the descriptive statistics obtained from EBSC, dogmatic thoughts shaped children's epistemological views (54%). In particular, authority/accuracy, the source of knowledge and hypothesizing sub-dimensions of epistemological views were the areas in which dogmatic thinking was most apparent. Despite not being in the majority, a considerable percentage of children (38%) had skeptical thoughts, which is a promising result. The remaining 8% of the children had not yet constructed conceptual knowledge.

Özel gereksinimli bireylerin eğitim süreçlerinde görev alan öğretmenlerin ve çocuk gelişimi bölüm... more Özel gereksinimli bireylerin eğitim süreçlerinde görev alan öğretmenlerin ve çocuk gelişimi bölümünde öğrenim gören öğrencilerin, özel eğitime gereksinim duyan bireylere ilişkin görüşlerinin önemli olduğu düşünülmektedir. Bu bağlamda çalışmanın amacı, özel eğitim sınıf öğretmenlerinin ve çocuk gelişimi bölümünde öğrenim görmekte olan öğrencilerin özel eğitime gereksinimi olan bireylere ilişkin metaforik algılarını ortaya koymaktır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2015-2016 eğitim öğretim yılında Hakkari il Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğü' ne bağlı kurumlarda görev almakta olan 35 özel eğitim sınıf öğretmeni ve Hakkari Üniversitesi Sağlık Hizmetleri Meslek Yüksekokulu Çocuk Gelişimi Bölümünde öğrenim görmekte olan 68 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında, katılıcımalara, "Özel eğitime gereksinimi olan birey bir evin………………dır (dir, dur). Çünkü …………." şeklinde açık uçlu bir soru yönlendirilmiştir. Araştırmada ulaşılan metafor seçimlerinin, ortak ve farklı yönleri, katılımcıların belirttiği sebeplere göre incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın genel sonuçlarına göre, "bahçe" en fazla, "banyo" ise en az tercih edilen metafor olarak tespit edilmiştir.

The aim of this study to define personal play identity and examine the fundamental elements in it... more The aim of this study to define personal play identity and examine the fundamental elements in its development process. Within the scope of this research, 66 works (36 experimental, 28 theoretical, and two both experimental and theoretical) were reviewed and discussed by following the systematic literature review process. After reviewing process, the fundamental elements of personal play identity can be examined under four themes, namely play, personality, socio-culture and environment, and economics and technology. The evolutionary nature of play, which can be defined as an individual's complex specialized identity is considered as a part of their development, allows personal play identity to be transferred to the next generations as it shaped by the continuous interaction of factors, such as socio-cultural environment, economy and technology. It is thought that play identity has a power that can make a positive difference to people since it presents a healthy development in most skills and attitudes which determine the quality of life, such as developing solutions for the problems faced by people throughout their lives, establishing social relations, achieving identity, and the ability to cope with problems.

The study was carried out with 11 teachers who have professional experience ranging between 3 to 19 years from private and public preschools. The study was specified according to criterion sampling strategy under the purposeful sampling method. The data gathered via open-ended questions and the phenomenology method, one of the qualitative research designs, was used. The qualitative content analyses technique was applied for analyzing the data. It was reached remarkable themes about the preschool teachers’ pedagogical challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic based on the analysis of data. The aim of this study is to examine 4-7 year old children’s drawings of the school of their dream... more The aim of this study is to examine 4-7 year old children’s drawings of the school of their dreams and to compare them with today’s schools. In a total of 45 children who attend private institutions in Ankara participated in the research. The method of the research is qualitative and data collection tools consisting of picture drawing and interview forms directed at children after drawing are also prepared with a qualitative approach. Children’s drawings were examined according to their developmental stages and children’s dream schools were compared with today’s schools by performing descriptive statistics on drawings and responses to interviews. According to the findings, drawings of younger age range were more unusual than drawings of older age range and physical structures, materials; and education programs of existing schools exhibit a remote image of the dream schools of a large portion of the children who were involved in the survey.

Bu genel amaç doğrultusunda; fen ve doğa temelli araştırmalarda incelenen konuların, kullanılan araştırma yöntemlerinin ve (son olarak) araştırmalarda yer alan katılımcı grupların dağılımı incelenmiştir. Betimsel tarama modeli, çalışmanın yöntemi olarak tercih edilmiştir. Makale seçimlerinde; çalışmaların Türkiye’de son beş yıl içinde yapılmış olması, öncelikli tarama ölçütü olarak benimsenmiştir. This study sought an answer to the question whether the digitalization of play is technological m... more This study sought an answer to the question whether the digitalization of play is technological mutation or digital evolution. To this end, 14 studies published over the last five years were reviewed and discussed under four themes, namely digital technology and children, parents', and teachers' perceptions of digital technology, screen effects, and digital-based learning. The review showed that digital technologies had entered children's daily lives and digital applications had become an important part of early childhood education programmes. Although digital technologies offer positive contributions to children's learning and improve some skills (creativity, problem-solving, and even motor development), it seems as a potential danger to reduce children's play process only to the use of digital games. If this happens, the evolutionary and genetic origin of play, which has an older history than humanity, will be seriously devastated.

Bu araştırmanın amacı oyuna ilişkin algıların incelenmesini hedefleyen bir ölçme aracının gelişti... more Bu araştırmanın amacı oyuna ilişkin algıların incelenmesini hedefleyen bir ölçme aracının geliştirilmesidir. Bu araştırma kapsamında Oyun Algısı Ölçeği (OAÖ) her ne kadar okul öncesi öğretmen adaylarının katılımı ile geliştirilmiş olsa da ölçeğin öğretmenler, ebeveynler, pedagoglar ve alan uzmanları gibi çeşitli çalışma gruplarına da uygulanabilecek özellikler taşıması hedeflenmiştir. OAÖ pilot ve ana uygulama olmak üzere iki aşamada geliştirilmiştir. Çalışma, bir devlet ve bir vakıf üniversitesinin Eğitim Fakültesi Okul Öncesi Öğretmenliği bölümünde öğrenim gören 240 öğretmen adayı ile 2017/2018 ve 2018/2019 akademik yıllarında yürütülmüştür. Yapılan analizler sonucunda, 20 maddeden oluşan beşli likert tipteki ölçeğin; "oyunun işlevi ve oyunda ilgi/merak/keşif", "oyunun özgünlüğü ve amacı" ile "oyunun doğası ve kaynağı" olmak üzere üç faktörlü bir yapıya sahip olduğu belirlenmiştir. Maddetoplam korelasyon katsayılarının .157≤ r ≤ .656 aralığında değiştiği tespit edilmiş ve Cronbach alpha değeri de .728 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar, geliştirilen ölçeğin araştırmalarda kullanılabilecek geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçüm aracı olduğunu göstermektedir.

Based on the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015, this stud... more Based on the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015, this study aimed to determine the extent to which affective characteristics such as epistemic beliefs, motivation and selfefficacy predicted students' performance in science and whether this differed between countries that exhibited different levels of achievement. In accordance with the purpose of the study, two countries were randomly selected from each of the three achievement levels defined by PISA (above average, average, and below average) and all the students that took the test from the selected countries were included in the analysis. A simple linear regression analysis was performed using the IDB Analyzer program, which facilitated the analysis of the layered data collected in this study. According to the results, it was determined that the students' affective characteristics predicted their science performance by 30% regardless of the achievement level.

The aim of this research was to develop a STEAM-based program for teaching middle school students... more The aim of this research was to develop a STEAM-based program for teaching middle school students the concept of time to enhance their computational thinking skills. The proposed Time Teaching Program (TTP) consists of modules and activities on the definition of time, historical development of time measurement tools, universal time measurement system, space-time theory, and time as a fourth dimension. To determine the effectiveness of TTP and its effect on middle school students' computational thinking skills, a mixed methodology was adopted in which both a quasi-experimental design including a pretest-posttest control group and an observational case study were used concurrently. The study group consisted of eighth-grade students from a public middle school in Turkey, selected according to the convenient sampling method. A computational thinking test was used to collect quantitative data, and observations and semistructured interviews were utilized for the collection of qualitative data. According to the results of analyses, when the effects of the pretest scores were not considered, there was a significant difference (F. 469 , 1, R 2 = .518) between the final test scores of the experimental and control groups in favor of the former. Based on these findings, it can be stated that the proposed STEAM-based program significantly improves the computational thinking skills of eighth-grade middle school students.

This study examines preschool children's learning styles by utilising a mathematical model. The m... more This study examines preschool children's learning styles by utilising a mathematical model. The model uses a Euclidean geometry algorithm to generate a graphical representation of the learning styles. The algorithm of the developed mathematical model was developed as a practical application of the theoretical assumptions. Index of Learning Styles for Children (ILSC), developed by one of the researchers, has been applied to a total of 301 five-year-old children. Results of the study indicate that children utilise the active, cognitive and visual learning styles under the control of the right hemisphere, and the sequential (analytical) learning styles under the control of the left hemisphere. The modelling algorithm reveals that the children's learning style preferences are shifted towards the right hemisphere at the rate of 8%. The results also provide empirical support that the developed model can mathematically explain the theoretical assumptions it is based on.

Çocukların davranış kazanımında ebeveyn ve diğer aile üyelerinin çocuğun gelişimsel dönemlerini de bilmesi olumlu davranış kazandırma da etkili olacaktır. Araştırmanın amacı, bir devlet üniversitesinde görev yapmakta olan idari ve akademik personellerin, 0-12 yaş arasında problem davranışları tespit edilen çocuklarının problem davranışlarını en aza indirgemeye çalışmaktır. Çocukların problem davranışlarını belirlemeyi ve bu davranışları en aza indirmeyi hedefleyen bir uygulama programı ebeveynlerinin de aktif katılımıyla 2016-2017 güz akademik döneminde araştırmacılar tarafından 13 çocuk ve ebeveynlerinin katılımıyla yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada veri toplama yöntemi olarak gözlem ve görüşme teknikleri kullanılmış, elde edilen verilerde nitel yöntemlerle incelenmiştir. The study was carried out with 11 teachers who have professional experience ranging between 3 to 19 years from private and public preschools. The study was specified according to criterion sampling strategy under the purposeful sampling method. The data gathered via open-ended questions and the phenomenology method, one of the qualitative research designs, was used. The qualitative content analyses technique was applied for analyzing the data. The aim of this study is to examine 4-7 year old children’s drawings of the school of their dream... more The aim of this study is to examine 4-7 year old children’s drawings of the school of their dreams and to compare them with today’s schools. In a total of 45 children who attend private institutions in Ankara participated in the research. The method of the research is qualitative and data collection tools consisting of picture drawing and interview forms directed at children after drawing are also prepared with a qualitative approach. Children’s drawings were examined according to their developmental stages and children’s dream schools were compared with today’s schools by performing descriptive statistics on drawings and responses to interviews. According to the findings, drawings of younger age range were more unusual than drawings of older age range and physical structures, materials; and education programs of existing schools exhibit a remote image of the dream schools of a large portion of the children who were involved in the survey.

This study sought an answer to the question whether the digitalization of play is technological m... more This study sought an answer to the question whether the digitalization of play is technological mutation or digital evolution. To this end, 14 studies published over the last five years were reviewed and discussed under four themes, namely digital technology and children, parents', and teachers' perceptions of digital technology, screen effects, and digital-based learning. The review showed that digital technologies had entered children's daily lives and digital applications had become an important part of early childhood education programmes. Although digital technologies offer positive contributions to children's learning and improve some skills (creativity, problem-solving, and even motor development), it seems as a potential danger to reduce children's play process only to the use of digital games. If this happens, the evolutionary and genetic origin of play, which has an older history than humanity, will be seriously devastated.

Bu araştırmanın amacı oyuna ilişkin algıların incelenmesini hedefleyen bir ölçme aracının gelişti... more Bu araştırmanın amacı oyuna ilişkin algıların incelenmesini hedefleyen bir ölçme aracının geliştirilmesidir. Bu araştırma kapsamında Oyun Algısı Ölçeği (OAÖ) her ne kadar okul öncesi öğretmen adaylarının katılımı ile geliştirilmiş olsa da ölçeğin öğretmenler, ebeveynler, pedagoglar ve alan uzmanları gibi çeşitli çalışma gruplarına da uygulanabilecek özellikler taşıması hedeflenmiştir. OAÖ pilot ve ana uygulama olmak üzere iki aşamada geliştirilmiştir. Çalışma, bir devlet ve bir vakıf üniversitesinin Eğitim Fakültesi Okul Öncesi Öğretmenliği bölümünde öğrenim gören 240 öğretmen adayı ile 2017/2018 ve 2018/2019 akademik yıllarında yürütülmüştür. Yapılan analizler sonucunda, 20 maddeden oluşan beşli likert tipteki ölçeğin; "oyunun işlevi ve oyunda ilgi/merak/keşif", "oyunun özgünlüğü ve amacı" ile "oyunun doğası ve kaynağı" olmak üzere üç faktörlü bir yapıya sahip olduğu belirlenmiştir. Maddetoplam korelasyon katsayılarının .157≤ r ≤ .656 aralığında değiştiği tespit edilmiş ve Cronbach alpha değeri de .728 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar, geliştirilen ölçeğin araştırmalarda kullanılabilecek geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçüm aracı olduğunu göstermektedir.

Based on the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015, this stud... more Based on the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015, this study aimed to determine the extent to which affective characteristics such as epistemic beliefs, motivation and selfefficacy predicted students' performance in science and whether this differed between countries that exhibited different levels of achievement. In accordance with the purpose of the study, two countries were randomly selected from each of the three achievement levels defined by PISA (above average, average, and below average) and all the students that took the test from the selected countries were included in the analysis. A simple linear regression analysis was performed using the IDB Analyzer program, which facilitated the analysis of the layered data collected in this study. According to the results, it was determined that the students' affective characteristics predicted their science performance by 30% regardless of the achievement level.

The aim of this research was to develop a STEAM-based program for teaching middle school students... more The aim of this research was to develop a STEAM-based program for teaching middle school students the concept of time to enhance their computational thinking skills. The proposed Time Teaching Program (TTP) consists of modules and activities on the definition of time, historical development of time measurement tools, universal time measurement system, space-time theory, and time as a fourth dimension. To determine the effectiveness of TTP and its effect on middle school students' computational thinking skills, a mixed methodology was adopted in which both a quasi-experimental design including a pretest-posttest control group and an observational case study were used concurrently. The study group consisted of eighth-grade students from a public middle school in Turkey, selected according to the convenient sampling method. A computational thinking test was used to collect quantitative data, and observations and semistructured interviews were utilized for the collection of qualitative data. According to the results of analyses, when the effects of the pretest scores were not considered, there was a significant difference (F. 469 , 1, R 2 = .518) between the final test scores of the experimental and control groups in favor of the former. Based on these findings, it can be stated that the proposed STEAM-based program significantly improves the computational thinking skills of eighth-grade middle school students.

This study examines preschool children's learning styles by utilising a mathematical model. The m... more This study examines preschool children's learning styles by utilising a mathematical model. The model uses a Euclidean geometry algorithm to generate a graphical representation of the learning styles. The algorithm of the developed mathematical model was developed as a practical application of the theoretical assumptions. Index of Learning Styles for Children (ILSC), developed by one of the researchers, has been applied to a total of 301 five-year-old children. Results of the study indicate that children utilise the active, cognitive and visual learning styles under the control of the right hemisphere, and the sequential (analytical) learning styles under the control of the left hemisphere. The modelling algorithm reveals that the children's learning style preferences are shifted towards the right hemisphere at the rate of 8%. The results also provide empirical support that the developed model can mathematically explain the theoretical assumptions it is based on.

Çocukların davranış kazanımında ebeveyn ve diğer aile üyelerinin çocuğun gelişimsel dönemlerini de bilmesi olumlu davranış kazandırma da etkili olacaktır. Araştırmanın amacı, bir devlet üniversitesinde görev yapmakta olan idari ve akademik personellerin, 0-12 yaş arasında problem davranışları tespit edilen çocuklarının problem davranışlarını en aza indirgemeye çalışmaktır. Çocukların problem davranışlarını belirlemeyi ve bu davranışları en aza indirmeyi hedefleyen bir uygulama programı ebeveynlerinin de aktif katılımıyla 2016-2017 güz akademik döneminde araştırmacılar tarafından 13 çocuk ve ebeveynlerinin katılımıyla yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada veri toplama yöntemi olarak gözlem ve görüşme teknikleri kullanılmış, elde edilen verilerde nitel yöntemlerle incelenmiştir.
