In this work, supercritical fluid extracts were obtained from fresh and dried elderberries of S. nigra L.: A (dried berries, ethanol (C2H5OH) absolute), B (dried berries, ethanol 96%), C (dried berries, ethanol 70%) and D (fresh berries, ethanol 96%). Evaluation of the in vitro enzymatic activities and antioxidant activity (AA) of the extracts and a preliminary assessment of their safety were carried out. The most promising extracts were selected for encapsulation in polymeric nanoparticles (NPs). All extracts demonstrated low to moderate AA, and they did not reveal any antimicrobial activity against the bacteria and yeasts tested. No toxic effect in the Artemia salina model was observed. Due to the moderate or good AA, anti-collagenase and anti-elastase activities, A and C extracts were selected and then successfully encapsulated into poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) NPs. Thymus zygis is a botanical species commonly found in aromatic herbs. The aim of this paper is to... more Thymus zygis is a botanical species commonly found in aromatic herbs. The aim of this paper is to study the composition of extracts obtained by steam and Clevenger distillation, N2 flow and the sensorial analysis of the same extracts. Chemical components were evaluated by capillary GC and GC-MS. Sensorial analysis was done by an untrained test panel of twenty judges. The minimum detection level, the preferred concentration and the preferred extract were evaluated in a vegetable oil having different added extracts and compared to the same oil having fresh herb added. Results show that the minimum detection level for 75% of the judges is about 0.01% for Clevenger and steam distillation extracts and 0.04% for N2 flow extract. The preferred extract was the one produced by steam distillation at 0.03% concentration. The disliking of the extracts seem to be related to the presence of p-cymene and γ-terpinene.

Supercritical fluid (SCF) extraction was compared to steam and Clevenger distillation, in terms o... more Supercritical fluid (SCF) extraction was compared to steam and Clevenger distillation, in terms of yield and composition of extracts, when applied to thyme and coriander leaves. In thyme extracts, higher production yields were always obtained by the Clevenger extraction method. Using SCF extraction high yields were also obtained but the extracts included other kinds of compounds. In respect of chemical composition of steam and Clevenger distillation extracts show similar profiles. Supercritical extracts present, besides the same components as that of steam distillation, non aromatic compounds. All the extraction methods tested produced very low yields of extracts when applied to coriander leaves, nevertheless the patterns of the chromatograms are quite different among those methods.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction was used to investigate the polyphenolic compounds, particularly a... more Ultrasound-assisted extraction was used to investigate the polyphenolic compounds, particularly anthocyanins, present in myrtle alcoholic extracts. This type of extract is typical in the making of liqueurs obtained from herbs or plants, especially medicinal plants. The leaf extracts were found to contain flavonoids from the quercetin and myricetin families. Besides these, the berry extracts also showed the presence of anthocyanins, hydrolysable tannins and quinic acid. The antioxidant capacity was studied using the ORAC and TEAC methods and the polyphenol content was measured using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The results showed that the values produced by the ORAC and TEAC methods were in agreement and that the antioxidant capacity correlated with the polyphenol content. The results showed that the leaf extracts exhibited higher antioxidant capacity than the berry extracts. A vegetable oil typically consists of a range of triglycerides, approximately 10% diglycerides, a... more A vegetable oil typically consists of a range of triglycerides, approximately 10% diglycerides, and a small fraction of free fatty acids and other minor constituents. The use of supercritical carbon dioxide for solvent extraction is currently the subject of numerous investigations. The solubilities of triolein in supercritical carbon dioxide were measured over a temperature range of 308--328 K and at pressures between 8 and 20 MPa by the static method. The data were correlated by the model proposed by Chrastil and the modification proposed by Adachi and Lu and Del Valle and Aguilera.
