To get information on the manufacturing methodology of these important works of art, detailed micro-Raman and X-ray diffraction measurements were performed on a polychrome terracotta slab representing a warrior, found in the ancient Etruscan town of Ceri. We have found that the terracotta slab, which was made using a calcium-poor clay, was fired at a temperature in excess of 800 ° C. For the polychrome, we have identified red ochre, azurite, yellow ochre, burnt umber and carbon black pigments, and we propose the use of kaolin as a white pigment, thus providing a reliable, although not definitive, description of the colour palette. On the basis of the obtained results, which do not reveal the presence of organic binders, we propose that a second firing procedure was carried out on the work of art at between 250 ° C and 300 ° C, in order to fix the pigmented layers.

These black stains of dendritic shape, anchored to porous surfaces, can hamper interpretation of artistic artifacts. The removal of these stains, until now, has been a serious problem. Using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and EPMA, the black spots were identified as manganese dendrites. The authors present the first results of a new chemical compound with reducing action and neutral pH, BDG 86, that quickly removes these black spots. To verify the efficacy of this chemical compound, the cleaning solution was analyzed after treatment by a continuous flux Autoanalyzer and AAS. The analyses confirmed that BDG 86 is an efficacious, quick acting, and harmless treatment for artifacts.

The reasons for the appearance of foxing are not yet fully understood nor is it known how its damage could be prevented. Recent research, including that by F. Gallo and G. Pasquariello, indicates a possible biological cause. Other researchers have proposed that the presence of iron and other heavy metals might be among factors favoring the development of foxing. Analysis of several paper samples was performed at different locations on the samples to determine the relationship between the visual appearance of the paper and its chemical composition. Foxing marks can be reproduced for experimental use by storing under specific conditions, suitable unmarked papers which have been contaminated with metals. Non-destructive analysis would aid in selection of samples for storage. Restoration ...

Less known is evidence of the prehistoric occupation occurring until the Bronze Age along the territory corresponding to the city of Rome and the surrounding area, called "Campagna Romana". Indeed, until a few years ago, the archaeological evidence relating to the phases of recent prehistory, from the Neolithic to the beginning of the Bronze Age, were completely, or almost completely, unknown. Recent excavations, mainly related to preventive archaeology, led to the identification of settlements and necropolises associated with a complex cultural scenario and shed light on the social and cultural aspects of daily life of the human groups who occupied this territory before the Latium civilization.
