The compensatory effect of adiponectin in the insulin deficient state is documented. We previously demonstrated that L-arginine enhances glucose transport mechanisms in renal-damaged rats. The current study was designed to investigate possible glucose handling synergy between L-arginine and adiponectin in Wistar rats induced with acute kidney injury. Twenty four rats weighing between 120g-150g were divided into 4 groups of six rats each. Group 1 (Control) had normal feed and water; Group 2 (Untreated) was induced with AKI and left untreated. Group 3 and 4 took 50mg/kg and 500mg/kg L-arginine respectively after AKI induction. Acute kidney injury was induced by intra-muscular injection of glycerol (50% solution, 8 ml/kg BW). Oral glucose tolerance test, insulin response test, serum creatinine test and adiponectin assay (ELISA) were carried out...

Forty-five rats divided into 9 groups of 5 rats were used. Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 were treated with 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 mg/kg b/w of CSC, and Groups 5, 6, 7, and 8 were treated with the same doses of DXM, respectively for 21 days. Group 9 (control) received distilled water once daily and all the rats were sacrificed 24 hours after the last treatment. DNA analysis was done on the harvested liver and brain. Significant reductions (p < 0.05) in the rate of DNA fragmentation of the liver tissues were observed in all the groups treated with the overdose of cough syrups when compared to the control. However, there was no significant difference in the rate of DNA fragmentation of the brain in all the groups treated with cough syrup as compa...

Cancer is characterized by the development of cells that are unlike normal cells and they divide ... more Cancer is characterized by the development of cells that are unlike normal cells and they divide rapidly and also corrupt and destroy normal tissues in the body. Cancer cells possess the ability to spread through the body and cause damage. Cancer is caused by the mutation of DNA. The estimate of cancer cases worldwide as of 202 has risen to 19.3 million and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Cancer has several meanswith which it sustains its growth. Cancerous action in the body involves unchecked, uncontrolled cell division and metastisis which is characterized by incading of other cells and tissues in the body. This is caused by a series of mutation in the genes of proteins that regulate the cell cycle and some other processes in the cell. These mutations suppress the ability of the cell to stop the cell cycle and promote cell division which causes continuous and uncontrolled division of cells. Bioactive compounds can be derived from plants, animals, or other sources and they have a wide range of biological and functional activities like anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anticancer, and antidiabetic activities; with the plant sources widely researched into for anticancer activities. Bioactive compounds have in recent years gained popularity in their role against cancer. This current study aims to review the mechanisms of action of anticancer activity of some of these bioactive compounds.

Chromium is a ubiquitous contaminant that has raised a major concern due to its level of toxicity. This study investigated the therapeutic role of leaf pulp of Carpobrotus edulis on chromium VI-induced toxicity in male Wistar rats. Thirty rats were divided into five groups of six rats, each comprising group 1 (control group), given 0.5 mL of de-ionized water. Group 2 was pre-treated with 0.5 mL of the leaf pulp for seven consecutive days, and afterward, 5 mg/kg potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) was administered for another seven days. Group 3 was given 5 mg/kg K2Cr2O7 for seven days and 0.5 mL of the leaf pulp after that. Group 4 was given only 5 mg/kg K2Cr2O7 for 7 days, and group 5 was treated with 0.5 mL of the plant leaf pulp for 14 days. The rats were sacrificed under mild diethyl ether anesthesia twenty-four hours after the last treatment. The blood, liver, and kidney were collec...

This diet completely excludes all animal products; meat, fish, poultry and also food gotten from milk, oil and honey. Vegan diet differs from vegetarian diet, although they are similar; some vegetarian include egg (ovo vegetarians), milk from animals (lacto vegetarians) or fish (pescovegetarian) in their diet. VD is believed to be healthier than diets containing animal produce and generally have a higher diet quality than non-vegan diets. VD has many health benefits and may also reduce the risk of certain conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer. However, these benefits seen in adults may not be the same case for toddlers and young children. Their diet directly affects their height, weight and also psychomotor and neurocognitive development. VD may not supply all the nutrients necessary for development and may lead to nutrient deficiency. Vegan children are at a risk of insufficient supply and deficiency ...

Data obtained were exported into an Excel sheet and descriptive statistics were used for data analyses. Results: Although there are no globally certified herbal medicines in the treatment of COVID-19, most of the respondents h...

This study was therefore designed to investigate the awareness and level of utilization of obstetric analgesia in labour among pregnant women in Wesley Guild Hospital Ilesha, Nigeria. The descriptive study involving 110 pregnant women revealed that about half (41.8%) of the respondents had poor knowledge score, 37.3% had fair knowledge, while 20.9% had good knowledge score on obstetric epidural analgesia. Only 10.9% of the respondents had used epidural analgesia and 83.3% were satisfied with the use. There was a significant relationship between knowledge of respondents and the use of obstetric epidural analgesia. Moderate awareness, poor knowledge and low level of utilization of obstetric epidural analgesia were documented. There is a need for adequate awareness programs to enhance the knowledge of epidural analgesia and its utilization among pregnant women in order to reduce the excruciating labour pain.
