The aim of this work was to establish the feasibility of the combined photoacoustic (PA) and phot... more The aim of this work was to establish the feasibility of the combined photoacoustic (PA) and photopyroelectric (PPE) detection of the vapours emitted from essential oils and their corresponding uncrushed leaves or flowers. Gas traces of jasmine (Jessamine (Jasminum)), mint (Mentha arvensis L.) and Damask rose (Rosa damascena Miller) and their essential oils were tested using a combined cell fitted with both a photopyroelectric film (PVDF) and a microphone in conjunction with a pulsed wideband infrared source (PWBS) source. Infrared PA and PPE absorbances were obtained simultaneously at room temperatures with excellent reproducibility and high signal-to-noise ratios. Significant similarities found between the PA and PPE spectra of the trace gas emissions of plant parts, i.e., flowers or leaves and their related essential oils show the good correlation of their emissions and that both effects are initiated by the same absorbing molecules.

Worthington obtained from faecal samples of infants suffering from diarrhoea during October 2001 to March 2002, were identified by the conventional biochemical methods and by serotyping. Estimates of genetic relationship are important in designing crop improvement programs. Information on genetic diversity is also valued for the management of germplasm and for evolving conservation strategies. Molecular markers are the best tools for determining genetic relations to domestic cultivars. Enterococcus species are one of the leading causes of nosocomial infections, which are difficult ... more Enterococcus species are one of the leading causes of nosocomial infections, which are difficult to treat specially with the rise of its Vancomycin resistant. Studies of Enterococcus isolates are essential for epidemiological investigation. Typing Enterococci is often based on the traditional phenotypic as well as genotypic methods. In this study Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is used as a novel phenotypic approach to the typing of Enterococci. FTIR spectroscopy results compared to antibiotic susceptibility testing and PCR amplification of Vancomycin gene results; the analysis showed that, 6 isolates were positive for Van gene (4 of VanA, 1 of VanB and 1 VanA plus VanB). Three of VanA and VanA plus VanB were resistant to all antibiotic tested (Ampicillin, Teicoplamin and Vancomycin) and VanB was found to be sensitive. FTIR spectroscopy (first derivatives) divided the isolates into 8 groups. 3 groups of VanA (4 isolates), one of VanB (one isolate), one of VanA plus VanB (one isolate) and the other 13 Enterococcus isolates were divided into 3 clusters. The study demonstrated that FTIR spectroscopy has good discriminative capacity and high reproducibility as compared to other techniques.

The present study was carried out to attempt molecular typing of a cluster of Salmonella Worthington isolates obtained from cases of infantile diarrhoea during a six month period, from a tertiary care paediatric hospital in Delhi, India. Salmonella Worthington was isolated from stool cultures of these patients. Repeated cultures of the common drinking water source of the hospital and the milk supplied to children from central kitchen were negative for known pathogens. All S. Worthington isolates were resistant to all the beta-lactams tested including third generation cephalosporins. Eight isolates were sensitive to furazolidone and 6 to ciprofloxacin. Molecular characterization by ribotyping revealed four different clones. Interpretation & conclusion: As four different ribotypes of the isolated Salmonella Worthington isolates were identified, it was clear that there was no single source of infection.
