In Vietnam, in the context of removing the protection ensured to domestic banks and of opening th... more In Vietnam, in the context of removing the protection ensured to domestic banks and of opening the financial sector for foreign investors, there are many questions on the banking system such as: how do banks operate under the umbrella of the government? Does the presence of foreign ownership contribute to improve bank performance? How does the central bank prevent excessive risk-taking of bank executives? Those questions are motivations for our thesis to analyze bank operations and efficiency in the context of the presence of foreign investors and of different economic conditions as well as of the interventions of the central bank. This dissertation contains three chapters that are outlined hereafter. The first chapter attempts to measure and explain bank efficiency of domestic commercial banks in Vietnam in a decade of reforms and restructuring of the financial system. Le premier chapitre analyse l'impact de la structure actionnariale et des réformes mises en œuvre dans les années 2000 sur l'efficacité des banques commerciales au Vietnam. Les résultats montrent que l'efficacité diffère selon le type de structure actionnariale ; les banques d'État ont des niveaux d'efficacité plus bas en comparaison avec les banques privées et les banques avec des actionnaires étrangers. Depuis la mise en œuvre de règles minimales de fonds propres plus strictes, la capitalisation des banques a également été un moteur important de l'efficacité de la banque. Le deuxième chapitre traite de la façon dont les banques au Vietnam fixent leurs marges d'intérêt avec un accent particulier sur la structure actionnariale des banques et la réglementation des taux d'intérêt par la banque centrale. Over-concern about thinness, especially among young girls including adolescents, is common in Jap... more Over-concern about thinness, especially among young girls including adolescents, is common in Japan. Behtnd the problem, there is a complicated social phenomenon and an effective strategy ts not known yet. In this study we tried to find a clue by comparing body image between two countries which have diflerent social backgrounds. Subjects were Japanese and Vietnamese junior high schoo] students from 12 to 15 y old, Three schools each and 1-2 classcs from each grade were randomly selected to involve 374 (boys 196, girls 178) and 714 (boys 352, girls 362), respectively, in Japan and Vietnam. Height and weight of subjects were measured and their satisfaction about their body shape and experience with dieting were asked by a questionnaire, Questions about their body image concerning their desire, Iiking of the opposite sex, own Iildng and health were answered by marldng silhouettes. About 60% of Japanese thought that obese (silhouette 9) is unhealthy while about 85[K} of Vietnamese thought that thinness (silhouette 1) is unhealthy Most of theJapanese girls overestimated their body wetght and were dissatisfied with thcir body shape and 78.3% wanted to Iose wcight. About 30% of them experienced weight loss including 2,8% of the low BMI students. Victnamese girls also had similar tendencies in their desire about their body image as the Japanese but they were Iess serious. The girls in both countries preferred the thinner body image to the healthy body image and thought that boys liked the thinner body image. Japanese boys were rnostly satisfied with their body shape: however, about half (46%) of the Vietnamese boys wanted a bigger and more muscular body image.
