Previous studies have described periods of higher larval presence, vertical and horizontal migration in grasslands, and the frequency of adult nematodes; as well as the effect of pasture trichomes on the migration and survival of Haemonchus larvae. The aim of this study was to determine the time-space layout and spread of gastrointestinal nematode larvae on pasture, and to estimate the effect of ivermectin applied to cattle on the time-dependent abundance of their eggs in a ranch in Veracruz. To determine the spatio-temporal arrangement, monthly morning grass samples were obtained from 30 sampling points from July 2008 to June 2009. Third stage larvae (L3) from each point were counted, and aggregation patterns were estimated through variance/mean and negative binomial K indices. Additionally, the number of eggs per gram in cattle feces was determined, from samples with (C...

The first one is the conceptual distinction between a intrinsically noncommuting spacetime, i.e., one where the coordinate functions fail to commute among themselves, on the one hand, and the proposal of noncommuting position operators, on the other. The second point concerns a particular form of position operator noncommutativity,

This equation of state describes, at a given point, the components of the corresponding energy-momentum tensor not only as a function at that point, but as a functional throughout the enclosed configuration. In order to establish the physical aceptability of the proposed static family of solutions satisfying nonlocal equation of state, we study the consequences imposed by the junction and energy conditions for anisotropic fluids in bounded matter distribution. It is shown that a general relativistic spherically symmetric bounded distributions of matter, at least for certain regions, could satisfy a nonlocal equation of state.

Two human monoclonal antibodies (HuMAbs), CDA1 and MDX1388, that neutralize toxin A and toxin B respectively and together protect hamsters from challenge with toxinotype 0 strains, have been developed using mice transgenic for human antibody genes (HuMAb mice, Medarex, Inc.). We assayed these antibodies for binding and neutralization of toxinotype III strain toxins. Methods: DNA sequence was determined for the receptor binding domain of toxinotype III toxins A and B. Recombinant fragments of both toxins were assayed by Western blot, ELISA and immunoprecipitation to measure HuMAb recognition. Toxin neutralization was measured by inhibition of cytopathic affect on IMR90 monolayers. Results: Toxinotype III amino acid sequence of the receptor binding domain of both toxins exhibited 96% homology to the same dom...

The current work examines the role and significance of the B7:CD28/CTLA-4 pathway in providing the costimulation necessary for the activation of these pathogenic T cells. In vitro T cell responses in B7-1-/- mice, 7-8 wk postinfection, were no different from wild-type controls, but the absence of B7-2 molecules resulted in a decrease in egg Ag-induced proliferation with increased IFN-gamma production. Both B7-1-/- and B7-2-/- mice exhibited intact granuloma formation. In contrast, CD4+ Th cells from B7-1/2 double-deficient mice displayed a dramatic loss of proliferative capacity upon stimulation with egg Ag. Most strikingly, these T cells secreted only IFN-gamma, but not IL-4 and IL-10, a pattern entirely opposite to that displayed by wild-type controls....

Methods A prevalence study was carried out on a random sample of 193 16 to 26 year-old university students (94 females and 99 males). Total cholesterol, high density lipoproteins (HDL), low density lipoproteins (LDL), triglycerides (TG) and glucose, resting blood pressure, waist circumference, height, weight and body fat and muscle mass percentages were measured. The participants answered a survey to assess their nutritional habits, lifestyle and stress. Results The major cardiovascular risk factors for males were ≥100 mg/dl (60.6%) LDL-C, >20% (50.0%) body fat percentage (BF%) and <40 mg/dl (39.4%) HDL-C; female risk factors were >33% (63.0%) BF%, ≥100 mg/dl (39.4%) LDL-C and <50 mg/dl (91.5%) HDL-C. Both male (12.1%) and female students (21.3 %) had criteria for metabolic syndrome and males (19.2...

There is considerable variation among infected individuals with respect to both severity of disease and the T-cell response to egg antigens. In the BL/6 mouse, the egg granulomas are relatively small and the relevant sensitizing egg antigens are largely unknown. We investigated the CD4(+) Th cell response of infected BL/6 mice to egg antigens fractionated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and found a prominent lymphoproliferative response to be directed against a 62-kDa component. With the aid of a specific T-cell hybridoma, 4E6, the 62-kDa antigen was isolated; following partial digestion with endoproteinase Glu-C, an internal amino acid sequence was found to be identical with one present in the enzyme phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) of the organisms Caenorhabditis elegans and Treponema pallidum an...

Growth of microorganisms in environments containing CO2 above its critical point is unexpected du... more Growth of microorganisms in environments containing CO2 above its critical point is unexpected due to a combination of deleterious effects including cytoplasmic acidification and membrane destabilization. Thus, supercritical (sc) CO2 is generally regarded as a sterilizing agent. We report isolation of bacteria from three sites targeted for geologic carbon dioxide sequestration (GCS) that are capable of growth in pressurized bioreactors containing scCO2. Analysis of 16S rRNA genes from scCO2 enrichment cultures revealed microbial assemblages of varied complexity including representatives of the genus Bacillus. Propagation of enrichment cultures under scCO2 headspace led to isolation of six strains corresponding to B. cereus, B. subterraneus, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. safensis, and B. megaterium. Isolates are spore-forming, facultative anaerobes, and capable of germination and growth under a scCO2 headspace. In addition to these isolates, several Bacillus type strains grew under scCO2,...
