The increasing success of this new industrial paradigm results from the possible combination of production costs reduction and profit maximization as well as efforts to increase environmental performance and harvest social benefits, such as job creation. However, a large number of countries faces challenges in building a valuable process because of the lack of communication between public and private stakeholder and the remanufacturing industry.

In this environment, manufacturing companies, and specifically SMEs, are struggling to manage, design, and implement innovation projects for improving their level of digitalization and automation. Against this backdrop, the current results of work in progress towards a framework for managing, designing, and implementing innovation projects is discussed. The framework proposes nine phases based on combining approaches of practical relevance, which have proven their efficacy in industrial application. The core of the framework is coined by a DEV-OPS cycle for designing and implementing a more digital and automated manufacturing system. The DEV-OPS cycle is supplement by an initial maturity assessment, by the determination of objectives and key results (OKRs), as well by training the employees for acquiring the necessary competencies in a more digital and automated working environment.

For a long time, this change has been mainly shaped by natural evolution, but with increasing growth of economies and population as well as technological development mankind is more and more forced to emphasize sustainability tasks to secure quality of life. Diverse global and regional initiatives with enormous impact on all areas of human living in the field of trade, infrastructure or production are shaping the world with increasing speed. To cope with the growing challenges such as climate change, scarcity of resources or increasing social pressure, a combined sustainability strategy of companies, investors, civil society and the public sector is essential to secure a prosperous future. This keynote introduces supra-regional initiatives of infrastructure and production and outlines approaches to manage related sustainability challenges.

Furthermore, the capability of generating and using new technologies effectively and efficiently has a direct impact on the organisations competitiveness and long-term success. Organisations with a high technological capability are able to achieve a higher differentiation through more innovative products and increase efficiency or reduce costs through process innovations. Moreover, an advancing liberalisation of markets intensifies competition not only for regular businesses, but also for Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) that cooperate with these businesses. RTOs face the challenge of shorter innovation cycles while at the same time the demand for advanced and market-ready product and process solutions rises. In order to be successful, RTOs have to pursue technical so...

The number of enterprises that are oriented towards corporate sustainability has increased in recent years, but the implementation still encounters a variety of limits. The goal of this chapter is the development of an integrated approach to foster sustainable development on the corporate level. In this context, not only tangible resources (e.g. raw material, energy or machines) but in particular intangible resources (e.g. expertise and professional competence of the employees, corporate culture or relations with stakeholders) are considered key success factors for a sustainable corporate development. For its application, the integrated approach provides a set of instruments and procedures, which can be used for the purpose of analysis, planning, controlling and re...

SMEs have to be more innovative, flexible, and efficient to successfully cope with typical challenges such as growing competition and rapidly changing demand patterns. In the past, knowledge management has been successfully implemented and developed by large enterprises in particular. In contrast, knowledge management for SME is not a matter of course yet. However, current survey results affirm that activities in the area of knowledge management depend less on the size of an enterprise or its industry, but rather on an enterprise’s business strategy and core competencies. In the light of these results, SMEs seem not to have disadvantages regarding the implementation of knowledge management because of their size or industry, but rather because they need to take strategic decisions t...

The prototypical app "Production Simulation Application" is described. It combines learning-conducive components that are used to familiarize users with objects, the graphical model buildup, and the use of programming language. Game elements such as levels, badges, and points are shaped to motivate learners to interact frequently. They enable immediate feedback. A test shows that the app has been used repeatedly at short intervals beyond the course. A procedure for experience-based learning for conducting simulation studies is developed, in which a so-called learning factory enables learners to complete a simulation study. It is shown that the developments can contribute to the dissemination of DES and to increasing the planning quality in times of risi...

They can be used directly at the workplace and aim at increasing the learning and teaching productivity. The huge variety of design paths for Learnstruments requires a systematic approach for their development. A morphology for Learnstruments is introduced. Exemplary learning-conducive applications for manual assembly in international organizations like 3D-PDFs and a Smart-Assembly-Workplace are presented. They help avoiding assembly errors and improve productivity by providing interactive instructions to the learners. By implementing these along the morphology guideline, the consideration of important didactical and technical criteria is ensured.
