It is proven that the following three basic notions of the theory are equivalent: (i) existence of projective resolvent of an operator T at a point λ0, (ii) strict regularity of λ0 for the operator T in the sense of [12, 13, 15], (iii) tamability of the operator (λ0 − T)−1 (T if λ0 = ∞), which means that there is a new equivalent system of seminorms on E, such that the operator is bounded in each of them.

For this class the Fekete-Szegö problem is completely solved. Various known or new special cases of our results are also pointed out.

The institutional structure and academic programs are based on the utilization of interdisciplinary approaches, and the traditional departmental structure does not exist providing the students with the opportunity of choosing their academic programs, to realize their goals. The students during their first two years of university education are required to take the same courses independent of their future aims, to be engineers, natural scientists, political scientists, economists, historians, art historians or artists. The university has a guidance system that includes various units to promote student success and to sup-port the realization of the academic programs. This paper aims at presenting an academic support program that is structured as a subdivision of the guidance system and runs totally by undergraduate students. The task of motivating the students with different in...

Researchers indicate students’ lack of ‘preparedness’ for learning in higher education and lack of understanding of what learning at university involves. It has been observed that students have incorrect learning habits and are prejudiced towards learning. Professors, in higher education, do not usually take students’ learning habits into consideration as a part of their vocations. Understanding students’ learning styles and, thus making an extra effort to design the courses may not be convenient especially for crowded classes. Therefore, developing tools that support students’ self-learning skills and facilitating learning outside the classrooms should be taken into account at universities. This article presents a student support program, Academic Support Program (ASP), that captures the basis for various ‘active learning’ methods. An overview of mathematics education in Turkey, the contemporary national high school mathematics curriculum, its varied applications, and factors affecting its success are presented. The national exam, which is mandatory for all students to be admitted to a university in Turkey, destructively circumscribes the mathematics curriculum in high schools. In this context, the factors causing unfavorable outcomes and preventive measures are discussed. While a modest selection of national and international attributes of educators and agencies are provided, the presentation mainly focuses on the achievements of the Turkish Mathematical Society in enhancing mathematics education and promoting public interest in the subject. A narration of an innovative school, the Nesin Mathematical Village, which is designed to cultivate deep mathematics appreciation among its participants, is given.

ASP designs and implements socially situated activities that are centralized and framed by 'learning-to-learn' principle. The peer study and discussion groups of ASP serve as best models for learning environments where permanent and meaningful learning take place. This paper focuses on the theoretical base, and both qualitative and quantitative evaluation of a series of peer group discussions that was held in the last two years, and articulates on the evaluation results regarding the impacts of the discussions on students' achievements.

The main goal of the program is to support the enhancement of a learning culture that fosters creativity which is constructed and perpetuated by the students. The core activity of this program is active learning sessions. This paper briefly summarizes the support program's activities and analysis the achievements of active learning sessions in terms of student success in some selected first year Calculus, Science of Nature and Humanity and Society courses.

The system includes specific educational and social components. Therefore in this study we narrate a pilot study, which plays a crucial role in the accomplishment of our main goal. The pilot program is offered on voluntary basis as opposed to compulsory courses. The program is composed of a compact course besides scientific and cultural events. The program is run by undergraduate students, they also lecture, conduct problem solving sessions, laboratories and discussion hours. The course covers introductory calculus and physics as well as biology, chemistry and social sciences. The program is enriched by specifically chosen movies, which supports analytical and critical thinking skills. The follow up discussions held after selected movie screenings are designed to support the critical thinking faculties of the students. Several instruments that are used to measure the effectiveness of this study demonstrate a significant increase in academic success rate of participants. The comparative success analysis over three years reveals the increase in the academic success rate of the participants. According to evaluation exam of a compatible course, the passing rate of participants remains consistently in the 25 % portion of the success chart. The involvement of students both in designing and executing the program is the main factor of success and we report that the utilization of such studies affect the academic success rates of undergraduate students.
