In-depth interviews were conducted with 28 respondents, and thematic analysis was adopted to analyze the data. Through inductive and deductive data analysis, three main themes are extracted, and six sub-themes are generated, helping to form a framework of authenticity in VR tourism. The findings contribute both to be authenticity theory and VR tourism implication.

Curious and free spirited from infancy, Durova found the nature of the traditional woman's sphere around this time to be stifling. She abhorred the arduous feminine sewing work she was expected to do, and reprimands of "You, girl, sit still! It's not proper for you to go wandering out alone!" 1 served only to convince her that she was being forced into a class of people to which she did not fully belong. From overhearing the lamentation of her mother, Durova gained a better picture of the status of women in early 19 th century Russia: they were not free women. Their destinies were largely dependent on their fathers and husbands, especially since the only opportunities for self-advancement offered to women were those that would make them better mothers and housewives. Durova's mother bemoaned the fact that she had produced "a bogatyr of a daughter" 2 instead of the son she had dreamt of; her repeated negligence and mistreatment of her young daughter resulted in Nadezhda being put in the care of her father, a hussar captain, and his flank hussar Astakhov. From Astakov she learned to love weaponry, horseback riding and the liberating freedom of the outdoors. At age ten Durova's mother tried to reclaim control of her, but her "hussar upbringing was deep-rooted", and Durova resisted all of her mother's attempts to seclude and mold her into the feminine persona she was expected to embody. Durova was torn between two worlds: the world of women, where she was expected to fulfill an oppressive gender role in accordance with her sex, and the world of men, where she had found the liberation, excitement and 1 Nadezhda Durova, The Cavalry Maiden: Journals of a Russian Officer in the Napoleonic Wars, trans.
