However, in tropical regions, optimisation of all façade orientations is required due to the relatively high solar radiation and long sunshine duration. While adaptive shading devices are a promising solution, they are not without disadvantages, and as such a combination of adaptive shading devices and a fixed shading device shall be considered. This research therefore aims to design the optimum internal shading devices on four façade orientations of a high-rise office building in a tropical city, considering fixed and adaptive shading design options, and to determine the impact on annual daylight performance using computational modelling and simulation. The simulation is carried out under: (1) fixed design option, focusing on the numbers and width of slats; and (2) ...

It has been sugested that vertical housing becomes one of the solution at fulfilling the housing need in the urban area in Indonesia. World Green Building Council reports that buildings contribute to 33% of carbon dioxide emission, 17% of water consumption, 25% of wood consumption, 30–40% of raw materials consumption, and 40–50% energy consumption in its construction and operation. Based on those facts, therefore, an environmentally sound development should consider building energy consumption. Green Building concept is being trusted as a way to solve this issue, but the local authority of Indonesia lacks of green criteria assessment for vertical housing. Through this study, it is expected to obtain some simple categories about green building concept for vertical housing. The methodology of this study, uses qulitative analysis by collecting perception from some respondents thhrough various ages and professions. The data is collected through online quetionnaire. The data determines to some key words and categories to see the distribution and corespondence on each answer. The result shows that respondents considered the Indoor comfortability and outdoor management being the important criteria that must be noticed on implementing green building design concept in vertical housing. It is caused by a half of respondents’occupants are not related to green building. This study is expected to be developed or considered for next study about green building assessment criteria for vertical housing in Indonesia.

The necessity of university campus development is required in ensuring the fulfilment of facilities and infrastructure of the human resource development. Since 2010, the infrastructure development at ITB Campus has been carried out using green building policies. However, the implementation has not indicated a significant impact. It is apprehensive that the ineffective application of green concept in the construction of new buildings will have a negative impact on the environment, especially the carbon emission effect emitted throughout the building's life cycle. It is important to ensure that the implementation of green building concept of new building construction, starts from the planning and design phases, contributes to carbon emission reduction. Therefore, a green building assessment is carried out for all new building designs. This assessment provides an opportunity to select the most optimum green design alternative to reduce the impact of carbon emissions up to 30% from existing designs. The building design assessment employs the open studio application and the EDGE platform from the World Bank. This paper will analyze the result of the green assessment of three new building designs (Labtek XV, Labtek XVI, Labtek XVII). The analysis will be managed comparatively, to obtain significant factors and to determine optimum alternatives.

However, some facts convey that the performance of construction projects is still very low, both in terms of cost, quality, time, and service level. This is happened partly due to the character of construction projects that have high risks and high uncertainties, involve many stakeholders, and go through various stages. Various attempts are made to improve the performance of the project, including utilizing BIM in overcoming various problems that arise due to the distinctive character of the construction project and the temporary nature of the project. The implementation of BIM in the observed case study shows that BIM as a system can contribute to improve the communication system between stakeholders, help identify risks, and help ensure all information can be conveyed properly at each transitio...

Research paper thumbnail of Reducing Heat Gains and Cooling Loads Through Roof Structure Configurations of A House in Medan

Roof as a building surface that has the most exposed area to the sun, contribute most of heat gains in the building. Therefore, the amount of solar heat gains on the roofs need to be minimized by roof structure configurations. This research aims to discover the optimization of roof structure configurations (coating material, structure material, inclination, overhang, and insulation) as one of passive design strategies that reduce heat gains and cooling loads of a house in Medan. The result showed that case four, white-painted metal roof combined with 45° roof pitched, 1.5m overhang, and addition of insulation, indicates the minimum heat gains production and the less cooling loads during clear sky day but not in the overcast sky condition. In conclusion, heat gains and cooling loads of a house in Medan could be diminished during clear sky day by the addition of roof coating with high reflectance low solar absorbtance, the slope roof, the extension of wider veranda, and the addition of insulation in the roof structure.

Research paper thumbnail of The Impact of Building Mass Configuration Towards Wind-Driven Natural Ventilation in Apartment in Jakarta

IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 2018

Recently, based on the data released by Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), housing ... more Recently, based on the data released by Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), housing is the second most energy-consuming sector after industry sector in Indonesia. Furthermore, the biggest energy consumption in housing is for air conditioner. Meanwhile, the rise of temperature cause people to use artificial ventilation more often, leaning to higher energy consumption. In order to reduce that, architects need to provide a design option, so people can achieve thermal comfort through natural ventilation by utilizing wind forces. Cilincing District is selected as case study for its microclimate characteristic. Since it is located in the coastal area of North Jakarta, the prevailing wind that comes from northeast can be utilized for wind-driven natural ventilation. There are some factors related to natural ventilation, one of them is building mass configuration. The aim of this paper is to find the optimum building mass configuration inside the given site area in order to achieve the optimum air movement around the buildings. The methodology in this research was design iteration using Ansys Fluent CFD simulator of 5 design models; each consisted of 6 building blocks. The results showed that model 5 with un-linear (zig-zag) building layout and combination of various building distances (widenarrowwide), which narrowed building distance in the middle of the site, provided optimum air movement around the buildings because it could create a kind-of tunnel/ trap that strengthened the wind which produced a constant wind velocity along the site.

This paper aims to analyse the application of traditional architecture elements as passive design strategies in modern architecture of Cairo. The methodology of this research is based on a computer simulation. As a case study of one building mass was design and simulated in this study. Building design was based on the application of traditional residential building in Cairo. Then, the performance of building design was simulated in terms of solar simulation, wind direction, and also heating and cooling loads. From the result, the application of traditional element was relatively effective as passive design strategies to reduce solar heat gains and applying natural ventilation because it has less opening in the south, catch the breeze air from southwest and northeast axis, while consumed less heating load. However, the cooling load was relatively the same with the conventional building, this might be lowered by using another passive design strategies.
