The aim of this study was to evaluate the baseline Sport Concussion Assessment Tool-5 (SCAT5) values in community Hispanic rugby players of both sexes. Methods The SCAT5 was administered as part of the pre-season medical testing to 219 Hispanic rugby players (female = 81; male = 138). Results Most of the community Spanish rugby players presented some symptom in the SCAT5 (male = 75.4%; female = 91.4%). The number and severity of the symptoms reported by the male players were lower than those reported by the female players (p = 0.001). The time to complete the tandem gait test and balance showed differences between sexes (p < 0.001). Conclusions The baseline SCAT5 values of community Spanish rugby players are different from the baseline SCAT5 values of professional players, which leads to the recommendation of conducting the SCAT5 in all players before the ...

Research paper thumbnail of The Legacy of Adolf Eugene Fick for Exercise Physiology

Journal of Physical Education and Sports Management, 2020

Adolf Eugene Fick proposed a method for the determination of the average cardiac output, based on the principle of conservation of the mass of an indicator. However, the way Fick's equation is expressed by the physiological of the exercise is misused because they establish as a dependent variable the oxygen consumption. Never would Fick have thought that his principle for determining cardiac output would be so fundamental for understanding and applying the body's response to exercise. Therefore, it really should be said: "by solving oxygen consumption in Fick´s equation you get a good conceptual approach to the physiological factors that determine this very important parameter in exercise physiology. This article aims to highlight Fick's true contribution to knowledge of exercise physiology. Indeed, by clearing out Fick's equation, simple mathematical models of cardiac output and the arterio-venous oxygen difference during exercise can be obtained. Finally, from Fick's equation it is possible to understand which are the physiological factors limiting the maximum oxygen consumption, one of the central parameters of exercise physiology.

Research paper thumbnail of Cardiovascular Response to Exercise in Vertebrates: A Review

Exercise is the greatest stress for the cardiovascular system, not only for the human being but f... more Exercise is the greatest stress for the cardiovascular system, not only for the human being but for the rest of vertebrates. For this reason, the cardiovascular response cannot be considered as only one “anthropocentric” meaning. The adjustment of cardiac output to exercise in the five large groups of vertebrates is highly variable. The response of the heart rate and the stroke volume as the main two basic factors that determine the increase in cardiac output is also highly variable. The difference in the range of heart rate is difficult to determine in many vertebrates, both at rest and maximum effort. The increase in stroke volume also differs among vertebrates. For example, while rainbow trout and leopard increase their stroke volume by increasing final diastolic volume (Frank Starling's law), humans do so at the expense of both increasing final diastolic volume and reducing final stroke volume (contractility). The variation in arterial pressure that occurs during exercise al...

Research paper thumbnail of Test–Retest Reliability and Minimal Detectable Change in Chester Step Test and 1-Minute Sit-to-Stand Test in Long COVID Patients

The COVID-19 is a multiorgan disease that appeared in December 2019 in the Chinese province of Wu... more The COVID-19 is a multiorgan disease that appeared in December 2019 in the Chinese province of Wuhan. It produces various clinical manifestations, although it mainly affects the respiratory system. Given these potentially detrimental long-term consequences of COVID-19, an appropriate assessment must be carried out to plan early rehabilitation interventions. To assess the persistent symptoms it produces, as well as exercise tolerance for a given exertion, stress testing is a feasible and cost-effective option. Therefore, the objective of this study was to provide test-retest reliability for the Chester Step Test and 1 minute Sit to Stand tests and to establish the minimum detectable change in Long-COVID patients. Method: This observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted following the STROBE guidelines. A total of 42 patients carried out, twice per partici-pant, the Chester Step and 1-Minute Sit-to-Stand (1min-STST) tests on two different days, with a five-day time ...

All injuries (total n=78) sustained during matches and training were recorded as recommended by World Rugby, and injury incidence rates per 1000 player-hours (ph) calculated for both types of activity. Injuries occurred more commonly during matches than during training (incidence 105.3 [95% CI: 78.7–131.9] per 1000 [ph] of match play, vs 1.16 [95% CI: 0.69–1.62] per 1000 ph of training), and most days absent per 1000 ph during matches with<3 days rest since the previous match (4209.2 [95% CI: 3516.2–4902.1] per 1000 ph of match play, vs 1947.4 [95% CI: 1511.8–2382.9] per 1000 ph of match play in matches with>3 days rest). These results provide information that may be useful in the development of strategies aimed at reducing the incidence of injuries.

However, most of the studies were realized in male athletes with limited evidence in female athletes. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore the acute ingestion of BRJ in female rugby players. Methods: Fourteen semi-professional female rugby players (25.0 ± 3.7 years) belonging to a team from the First Spanish Female Rugby Division participated in this study. Participants were randomly divided into two groups that realized a neuromuscular battery after BRJ (140mL, 12.8 mmol NO3−) or placebo (PLAC, 140 mL, 0.08 mmol NO3−) ingestion on two different days separated by one week between protocols. The neuromuscular test battery consisted of a countermovement jump (CMJ), isometric handgrip strength (i.e., dominant), 10-m and 30-m sprint, agility t-test and Bronco test. Afterwards, participants reported a rate of pe...

Endurance exercise is a model of physiological integration. There is no other animal activity in ... more Endurance exercise is a model of physiological integration. There is no other animal activity in which cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic-endocrine and neuromuscular functions are activated at the same time. Even apparently, silent functions are essential during exercise (digestive, renal). During long-term exercise, the absorption of water and carbohydrates is a determining factor in performance. Kidney function plays a fundamental role in trying to preserve the hydro-electrolyte balance during exercise. In this work we present an integrative physiological perspective during dynamic exercise (mobilization of a large muscle mass with a low to moderate degree of strength development), both from the point of view of health and performance. The response of the heart rate in the first moments of exercise is a good example of the feedforward mechanism. Overall, the nervous system has two control mechanisms: feedforward and feedback. These depend on the central command, a more functio...
