Research paper thumbnail of A high-voltage symmetric sodium ion battery using sodium vanadium pyrophosphate with superior power density and long lifespan

Journal of Power Sources, 2021

Abstract Sodium ion batteries have been considered as promising alternatives to lithium ion batte... more Abstract Sodium ion batteries have been considered as promising alternatives to lithium ion batteries for large-scale renewable energy and smart grids applications due to their low cost and rich resources. However, critical drawbacks such as low energy density and poor stability are hindering their development and application. In this work, a stable symmetric sodium ion cell using sodium vanadium pyrophosphate Na6·88V2·81(P2O7)4 as the positive and negative electrodes is fabricated. Since the bipolar Na6·88V2·81(P2O7)4 possesses high sodium-ion diffusion ability and stable structure framework, it demonstrates promising rate capability and cycling performance as both the positive and negative electrodes. The symmetric sodium ion cell, with Na6·88V2·81(P2O7)4 as the active material in both the positive and negative electrodes, exhibits a high operating voltage plateau of ≈3.0 V, distinct rate capability (e.g. 45 mAh g−1 at 10 C) and excellent cycling performance (e.g. 71.1% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 2 C). The results of this work represent a step toward the development of symmetric sodium ion batteries with high operating voltage, good rate capability and long lifespan.

This paper investigates the impact of offset pulse-width modulation (OPWM) on the capacitor voltage of the MMC under imbalanced ac-grid conditions. It is demonstrated that OPWM increases the maximum operating range of the MMC for a given set of restrictions, as it leads to a reduction of capacitor voltage by utilizing the total number of the SMs in the arms. Simulation results from an 800-MVA MMC-based HVDC transmission system demonstrate the effect of OPWM in the operation of the converters and the efficacy of the method compared to standard modulation methods.

By the proposed method, the remaining capacitor voltages not vary and the line-to-line voltages are balanced. This method is easy to be implemented by adjusting the voltage injection coefficient when SM fault occurs. The coefficient of injected zero-sequence voltage is designed by the number and position of the fault submodules (SMs) and the fault-tolerant capability of this method are also discussed. The effectiveness and advantages of proposed method are confirmed with simulation and experiment.

Lower extremity exoskeleton has been proven to be efficient to provide highly repeatable and accurate rehabilitation exercise, but most existing exoskeletons’ gait trajectories won’t vary with the users. This paper proposes an algorithm, named as gait cell based individualized gait trajectory generation (GC-IGTG), for the purpose of offering a natural and personalized gait trajectory reference for the lower extremity exoskeleton based on the body parameters of the patients. The GC-IGTG is based on extreme learning machine and AutoEncoder, which makes it achieve fast training speed and suitable for small sample training conditions. The gait cell concept is proposed to improve the efficiency and safety of the algorithm. The experimental results indicate that the generated trajectories with GC-IGTG are almost identical to the original ones.

A lithium-metal composite is proposed, which includes a carbon-nitrogen modified stainless steel ... more A lithium-metal composite is proposed, which includes a carbon-nitrogen modified stainless steel mesh (CNSSM) favoring homogeneous lithium-metal nucleation and growth of fresh and dense lithium deposits when employed as anode for lithium-metal batteries. This novel approach is able to overcome the usual drawbacks linked to the preexisting passivation layer at the surface of lithium. Instead, a favorable interphase with low resistivity is formed with the electrolyte, and the CNSSM modified lithium-metal composite (CNSSM-Li) results in low-voltage hysteresis (24 mV) and allows stable and dendrite-free lithium electrodeposition. The performance of lithiummetal batteries demonstrates the outstanding capabilities of the novel CNSSM-Li electrode in promoting cell energy density and cycling stability. In addition, advanced X-ray nano-tomography is employed to characterize the composition and morphology changes of this electrode upon plating.

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2019

Negative-and zero-sequence internal currents of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) under unbala... more Negative-and zero-sequence internal currents of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) under unbalanced ac-grid conditions can increase the peak voltage of the submodule (SM) capacitors, which should be kept below a maximum voltage limit. This paper investigates the impact of offset pulse-width modulation (OPWM) and zero sequence voltage injection on reducing peak SM capacitor voltages of the MMC during unbalanced ac-grid conditions. It is demonstrated that OPWM extends the operating range of the MMC for a given set of restrictions, as it leads to a reduction of capacitor voltage in every phase by utilizing all the SMs in the arms. Zero sequence voltage injection further reduces the maximum SM capacitor voltage among three phases under certain conditions. Simulation results from an 800-MVA MMC-based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system demonstrate the effect of OPWM in the operation of the converters and the efficacy of the method compared to standard modulation methods.

Widely used since the 1970s to stop premature labour, it is no longer approved for use in certain countries, including the USA, because of severe side-eff ects. Nevertheless, it is still used in many regions, including China and the European Union. Here we report the case of a pregnant woman who experienced agranulocytosis during continuous ritodrine therapy to prevent premature labour. We also describe the results of a literature review in which we found relatively few cases. Th erefore, our case may help extend the limited literature on this problem.

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of NaCl on leaf H+-ATPase and the relevance to salt tolerance in two contrasting poplar species

Trees, 2010

During a 30-day period of increasing salinity, we examined the effects of NaCl on leaf H ?-ATPase... more During a 30-day period of increasing salinity, we examined the effects of NaCl on leaf H ?-ATPase and salinity tolerance in 1-year-old plants of Populus euphratica Oliv. (salt resistant) and P. popularis 35-44 (P. popularis) (salt sensitive). Electron probe X-ray microanalysis of leaf mesophyll revealed that P. euphratica had a higher ability to retain lower NaCl concentrations in the cytoplasm, as compared to P. popularis. The sustained activity of H ? pumps (by cytochemical staining) in salinised P. euphratica suggests a role in energising salt transport through the plasma membrane (PM) and tonoplast. Saltinduced alterations of leaf respiration, ATP content and expression of PM H ?-ATPase were compared between the two species. Results show that P. euphratica retained a constant respiratory rate, ATP production and protein abundance of PM H ?-ATPase (by Western blotting) in salt-stressed plants. P. euphratica was able to maintain a comparatively high capacity of ATP hydrolysis and H ? pumping during prolonged salt exposure. By contrast, the activity and expression of PM H ?-ATPase were markedly decreased in P. popularis leaves in response to salt stress. Furthermore, NaCl-stressed P. popularis plants showed a marked decline of respiration (70%) and ATP production (66%) on day 30. We conclude that the inability of P. popularis to transport salt to the apoplast and vacuole was partly due to the decreased activity of H ? pumps. As a consequence, cytosolic ion concentrations were observed to be comparatively high for an extended period of time, so that cell metabolism, in particular respiration, was disrupted in P. popularis leaves.

However, the relationship between Id-1 expression and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has not been elucidated. In this study, we investigate the association of Id-1 protein expression and HPV infection in cervical carcinoma tissues. A total of 56 paraffin-embedded and 12 fresh cervical carcinoma tissues were collected for Id-1 and HPV detection. The Id-1 protein was detected by immunohistochemistry and Western blot in paraffin-embedded and fresh carcinoma tissues. Human papillomavirus DNA was detected and genotyped by using an oligonucleotide microarray and polymerase chain reaction. The overall HPV prevalence was 82.1%, whereas that of HPV type 16 (HPV-16) was 62.5% in cervical carcinoma. The results of Western blot were correlated to the immunohistochemistry results, showing a higher Id-1 expression level in HPV-infected especially HPV-16-infected carcinoma tissues. Inhibitor of differentiation 1 expression is correlated to HPV infection in cervical carcinoma, suggesting that Id-1 plays a role in HPV-related cervical carcinogenesis.

Sixteen studies with 1111 patients were analyzed. Elevated serum VEGF was significantly associated with poor PFS [HR 2.46, 95% CI (1.84, 3.29)] and OS [HR 2.21, 95% CI (1.57, 3.13)]. No significant heterogeneity existed in serum studies. Similarly, tissue VEGF overexpression was associated with poor PFS [HR 1.63, 95% CI (1.09, 2.42)] and OS [HR 1.70, 95% CI (1.01, 2.87)]. However, significant heterogeneity was found in tissue stud...

The HPV-positive samples showed higher Id-1 expression levels than the HPV-negative ones (Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel χ test [χCMH] = 4.39, P &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.05). The HPV-16-infected samples had higher Id-1 expression levels than the samples with infection of other single HPV genotypes (χCMH = 6.42, P &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.02).
