The first section of the paper delves into the historical context of alcohol consumption and its profound socio-cultural implications in ancient India. It explores how alcohol was intertwined with the social fabric, varying across different cultural and caste groups. The second part of the paper focuses on the more recent political dynamics in Tamil Nadu, specifically examining the period from 2016 to 2017 when the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) partially rolled back the prohibition on alcohol in response to widespread protests. Over the last five decades, Tamil Nadu has been predominantly under the rule of two Dravidian parties, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and AIADMK. These parties have alternated between enforcing total prohibition and permitting alcohol consumption. The unique political landscape in the state is characterized by the influence of the alcohol industry as a strategic tool for garnering votes. The paper highlights that both parties have vested interests in the alcohol business, making it a complex issue for effective prohibition. For total prohibition to be successfully implemented, a government must establish robust enforcement measures and create essential healthcare and de-addiction infrastructure. The interplay between politics, economics, and social implications in this context is explored in depth in this paper.

It has created a huge burden on society. More specifically, it has turned into one of the health risks that threaten to undermine societal order in general. The global effort to save humanity from this public health crisis is heavily reliant on professional social workers. According to the study's qualitative findings and perspectives on social workers' experiences in the health sector, the COVID-19 response is addressed. This study explores the function and difficulties faced by frontline social workers through an empirical phenomenological approach. Primary data for this study was gathered from 20 social workers from the leading healthcare institutions in Tamil Nadu using purposive and snowball sampling. The study focuses on three key conclusions, including the requirement for interdisciplinary expertise to address the multifaceted effects of pandemics, perceived difficulties in pandemic practice, and obstacles in service provision. The report offers recommendations for advancing social work initiatives as a conclusion. It also explains how modern social work may benefit healthcare facilities better in the fight against the pandemic.

The unhygienic environment of the slums coupled with substandard settlements bereft of basic amenities greatly compromise the health and wellbeing of the slum dwellers, especially the women. In addition, lack of proper intake of nutritional foods adversely affects their health. Since their staple diet consists of only rice, obtained from ration shop, their diet is devoid of other foods that contain essential calorie to sustain them. The study has revealed that poor health status of women was also due to marriages at an early age, resulting in early age pregnancies and improper pregnancy spacing. The study was undertaken in two slums namely Namachivayapuram and Apparao garden of Zone-8 in the corporation of Chennai. It is inferred that more than 31% of women have more than three children. A whopping 67% women delivered the first child before the age of 21, was a worrying discovery made from the study. More so, these young mothers do not get sufficient pre-natal and post-natal care to keep their heath and that of their children in an enhanced condition. It is heartening to note that no deliveries took place at their homes; instead all the deliveries were either at the government hospitals or private clinics. The environment at the government hospitals and primary health centers is quite unhygienic compared to private clinics. No woman likes the foul smell that emanates from government health care settings. The women prefer the primary health care centres for deliveries as they could hardly afford private clinics. As women are less educated their awareness standard in these matters is also very low.
